POST REVIEW:
2022 CHICAGO AUTO SHOW WRAPED UP ITS RETURN IN FEBRUARY
The 2022 Chicago Auto Show concluded its 10-day run at McCormick Place on Presidents Day. Despite facing ongoing hurdles of producing a show during a global pandemic and vehicle inventory shortages, show organizers were able to bring back First Look for Charity, host a successful Media Preview and safely welcome hundreds of thousands of people to the public show. Eager attendees traveled to McCormick Place in February to get a look at the latest cars, trucks, SUVs and EVs, including a brand-new indoor electric vehicle test track which featured a variety of new models.
“While we experienced lower attendance than in a typical year, in part due to Covid restrictions being in flux and the difficulty communicating a clear message regarding safety protocols, we’re proud to have found a way to bring the auto industry’s latest to our loyal fans,” said Chicago Auto Show General Manager Dave Sloan.
The show featured an array of vehicles that made their global, North American or auto show debut including:
2023 BMW iX M60
2022 BMW i4 M50
2023 Chevrolet Blazer
2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV
2023 Chevrolet Corvette Z06
2022 Ford Bronco Raptor
2022 Ford Bronco Everglades
2022 Ford GT Alan Mann Edition
2022 GMC Hummer EV
2022 Hyundai Tucson PHEV
2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee 4xe
2023 Kia Sportage PHEV
2022 Lexus LX 600
Nissan Frontier concepts
2023 Nissan Z
2022 Ram 1500 “Built to Serve”
2023 Subaru Solterra
2023 Subaru WRX
2023 Toyota bZ4X
2023 Toyota Sequoia
2022 Toyota Tundra Capstone
Fan favorites returned such as Camp Jeep (which celebrated its 18th year at the show), Ram Truck Territory and Subaru’s popular National Parks immersive exhibit and dog adoption. To date, 14 dogs were adopted from the show. New attractions this year featured an indoor 2022 Toyota Tundra test track and Ford’s two new indoor tracks to highlight its Bronco family of vehicles and its latest EVs, the F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E.
“These last two shows really illustrate the importance of in-person interaction with the vehicle,” said Sloan. “During our July special edition show, nearly 40 percent of attendees experienced a test track or test drive, a number we beat this year with three outdoor test drives and six indoor test tracks—more indoor test tracks than we’ve ever offered before!”
Automakers reported hitting their test track and test drive number goals this year, which were on pace with years preceding the pandemic, despite the smaller show. “This is an extremely valuable metric for our exhibitors, as research shows experiential opportunities like these translate directly to vehicle sales; that’s the value of an auto show,” said Sloan. “We look forward to the future as we continue to re-imagine and rebuild the Chicago Auto Show.”
That fan engagement and excitement translated to social media, supported by initial Meltwater data that reports the Chicago Auto Show’s message reached more than 35 million people, just over the last 90 days.
“An auto show and digital reach go hand-in-hand,” said Sloan. “We find this to be the case year after year. Fans want to share their experience with their network, and the show provides them a platform to do so. When they tag us and use our hash-tag, we’re able to track the collective reach, which really highlights the show as a powerful platform.”
The Midwest Automotive Media Association (MAMA) named the 2022 Kia Carnival as its 12th annual Family Vehicle of the Year, and the 2022 Genesis GV70 as the winner of the fourth annual Luxury Family Vehicle of the Year award during the Media Preview of the 2022 Chicago Auto Show. To qualify for the award, vehicles must have four doors and be new or significantly updated within the past year.
Other finalists for Family Vehicle of the Year were the 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee L and 2022 Hyundai Tucson. The 2022 Wagoneer/Grand Wagoneer and 2022 Acura MDX rounded out the luxury category.
For more information about the Midwest Automotive Media Association and its Family Vehicle and Luxury Family Vehicle of the Year Awards, please visit www.mamaonline.org.
At a time still challenged by a pandemic, 17 area charities on Feb. 11 shared more than $1.6 million raised by the 2022 Chicago Auto Show’s benevolent event, First Look for Charity, and two attendees left with the keys to new vehicles.
The black-tie benefit, which is held the evening before the auto show opens its 10-day public run, raised $1,516,010, boosting its total raised to more than $58 million over 30 editions. “First Look for Charity is a great instrument for the area’s new-car dealers to show the positive impact they have on their community,” said Bill Haggerty, chairman of this year’s auto show. “All the benefiting charities are involved locally, so the money that’s raised in Chicago stays in Chicago.”
The 2023 Chicago Auto Show is being planned for Feb. 11-20 at McCormick Place. The Media Preview will be held Feb. 9-10 and First Look for Charity will be the evening of Friday, Feb. 10. For more information on the Chicago Auto Show, visit ChicagoAutoShow.com.

2021 Auto Shows
Major auto shows are an excellent place to begin shopping for that new 2021-22 vehicle or just to browse if you are dreaming about your next new vehicle. These events provide the convenience of visiting virtually all of the vehicle manufacturers' displays, only in one large facility. You will be able to make your own comparisons of several models of that Sedan, SUV or Truck on your shopping list.
With all that being said, the major auto shows were cancelled for 2020-2021 with the exception of the Chicago Show which was completed in February 2020 prior to the arrival of the COVID 19 pandemic.
But now there is some good news! With the COVID 19 vaccines being administered across the nation and crowd restrictions being modified, scheduling major auto shows has begun.
Included are the following:
Chicago Auto Show - July 15-19, 2021
New York International Auction Show - August 20-29, 2021 Due to the rising spread of the Covid-19 Delta Variant and new vacine requirements in New York, the show has been cancelled.
North American International Auto Show (Detroit Motor Bella) - September 21-26, 2021
Miami International Auto Show - October 16-24, 2021
Los Angeles Auto Show - November 19-28, 2021

POST REVIEW:
Chicago Auto Show
Held in the summer for the first time ever, the five-day Chicago Auto Show Special Edition drew to a successful close the evening of July 19 after having entertained more than 100,000 attendees during its unprecedented run.
From the larger selection of vehicles to test drive on city streets, to engaging outdoor activations, to the evening street fest that celebrated warm temperatures the show has never seen before, the overall feedback of the show was overwhelmingly positive.
The Chicago Automobile Trade Association (CATA), producers of the Chicago Auto Show, were also pleased with the outcome – especially given the large number of hurdles that had to be overcome just to open the show, much less finish with positive results.
Show organizers designed an event full of pandemic safety protocols, resulting in being one of the first major events that was approved by city and state officials to open. However, soon after the approvals came, Illinois entered Phase 5 reopening and most of those protocols no longer needed to be implemented, forcing organizers to rethink many of the entry procedures.
“It seemed like every time a challenge was overcome, a new obstacle presented itself,” said Chicago Auto Show General Manager Dave Sloan. “For example, exhibitors faced a shortage of display vehicles due to the global chip shortage. Additional conflicts included the shortened move-in window and the busy summertime event schedule for the city that we were competing against.”
“There’s so much to do in Chicago in the summer that doesn’t typically overlap with our February show,” continued Sloan. “We had to get creative in order to capture our attendees’ attention at a completely different time in the calendar year. That wasn’t easy, especially when you’re talking about a seven-decade tradition of the Chicago Auto Show being held in February.”
Another advantage of the summer move was that nearly a dozen automakers took advantage of activating outdoor test drives, including Chevrolet, Chrysler, Dodge, Fiat, Ford, Jeep, Kia, Lincoln, Ram, Subaru and Volkswagen.
In most cases, manufacturers that ran outdoor test drives far exceeded any goals they had going into the show. Ford reported doubling its test drive goal, while Chevrolet, Kia and Lincoln well exceeded their goals.
The all-new outdoor Street Fest, which took place the first four evenings of the show, added food trucks, local brews, street musicians and the opportunity for attendees to get a glimpse of an array of vehicles displayed along the street, similar to a summertime cruise night. Adding the Street Fest also provided an opportunity to attract new audiences.
Show organizers plan to return to the show’s traditional February timing next year. 2022 show dates are scheduled for Feb. 12-21.
2021 Chicago Auto Show "Special Edition" Scheduled for July 15-19
Chicago Auto Show officials announced they received approval from state and city officials to host a special edition of the show July 15-19 at McCormick Place. The Chicago Auto Show will be one of the McCormick Place's first live, in-person events since the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown.
The special edition show will move to the West Building of the McCormick Place complex and expand outdoors to take advantage of July weather. With the show's move, attendees will now experience more outdoor test drive opportunities, test tracks and technology demonstrations, which will take place along Indiana Avenue and surrounding city streets. Auto show fans will be able to enjoy favorites like the Camp Jeep and Ram Truck indoor test tracks as well as Subaru's popular pet adoption event - all of which will be executed in a safe and healthy manner. Ford has also embraced the show's outdoor space availability with experiences featuring the new Bronco, Bronco Sport and all-electric Mustang Mach-E SUV.
"We've been working with McCormick Place officials for months on an opening plan, and very early on they saw that our show may provide a pathway to re-opening the facility," said Chicago Auto Show General Manager Dave Sloan. "We stand committed to providing a safe environment for all involved and will carefully adhere to the health and safety protocols and guidelines set forth by city and state officials. McCormick Place is an important economic engine for our city and state, and we take very seriously the responsibility that comes with helping to get it running again."
The show's 2021 plan begins with an electronic ticketing process. Tickets for the 2021 Chicago Auto Show will be sold exclusively online. Attendees will be able to select their preferred attendance date and time utilizing timed entrance windows designed to carefully control crowd capacity throughout each event day. Show organizers will also intentionally regulate the number of attendees throughout the day to control the number of people on the show floor at any given time.
Attendees will also have the opportunity to pre-register for onsite activations including indoor and outdoor test track and ride-and-drive events. This will allow attendees to schedule participation in various show attractions ahead of time, diminishing lines and reducing congestion within exhibits.
"While we believe February is the right time for the Chicago Auto Show to have its biggest impact on the industry and the area economy, we're thrilled to be able to experiment with the July dates," said Sloan. "The timing has allowed us to get creative and try new things and the automakers have really embraced it."
Among their new ideas, Chicago Auto Show organizers are seeking approval on plans to transform Indiana Avenue into an automotive street festival in the evening of most show days featuring local food, entertainment and, of course, shiny new cars and trucks.
The 2021 Chicago Auto Show special edition will run Thursday, July 15 through Monday, July 19. Ticket information and important show updates can be found at ChicagoAutoShow.com.
2021 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS - Detroit)
now as MOTOR BELLA Scheduled for September 21-26
The North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) today announced it will not hold its 2021 auto show as planned. Instead, show officials revealed a “bridge to the future” with an auto-centric event called Motor Bella.
The new event will bring next-generation mobility and exciting vehicle debuts to media, show-goers and the automotive enthusiasts’ world in a never before experienced way while also addressing continued COVID-19 concerns about indoor events. Motor Bella will be held from Sept. 21-26, 2021, at the M1 Concourse in Pontiac, Mich. Centrally located in the metro Detroit area, M1 Concourse, often referred to as an “87- acre playground for auto enthusiasts,” enables exhibitors to showcase key vehicles and technologies in an outdoor setting.
Plans call for 1.6 million square feet of dynamic vehicle and technology display space including terrain ideal for showcasing off-roading capabilities. M1 Concourse also offers a 1.5-mile hot track on the grounds for technology and vehicle demonstrations. “The pandemic has caused changes in our society and world in ways not previously imagined, and we all should be looking for new and highly creative ways of doing business,” said Executive Director Rod Alberts. “This new event captures that creative spirit. It will provide new mobility experiences and increasingly innovative approaches to tapping into the industry and its products.” Alberts said attendees can expect a multi-sensory experience at the new event. “This all-outdoor venue, with adrenaline-pumping track activities and a full complement of OEM and technology exhibits, is going to offer the sights, sounds and even the smell of all that the new world of mobility has to offer.”
As auto shows around the world are being re-imagined and will continue to do so in the wake of the pandemic, NAIAS had been reimagining its position for some time. “While auto shows remain an important platform to promote new mobility innovations and to help people make major vehicle purchase decisions, the traditional auto show model is changing,” Alberts said. “We cannot ignore the major disruptions caused by the pandemic and the impact it has had on budgets. As such, we will be providing an amazing experience to the media, the auto industry and the public in a cost-effective way.”
Event Chairman Doug North noted that the M1 Concourse was envisioned as part of the 2021 Motor Bella activities, so it was “a natural progression” to build upon it in light of the growing demand for experiential mobility shows and an increased appetite for outdoor events as a result of the pandemic. Motor Bella was originally conceived as a celebration of Italian and British supercars and classic vehicles and was to have debuted at the June 2020 NAIAS. “With our new program for 2021, we will take the Motor Bella concept to the next level with multiple brands and mobilities represented, from hometown to international nameplates, autonomous vehicles to high-performance supercars and everything in between,” North said. “It will be a mobility-filled event. One that will provide our show partners with a cost-efficient backdrop to share all of their brands, products and technologies in a fun and festival-like atmosphere that’s completely outdoors.”
Jordan Zlotoff, CEO of M1 Concourse, said, “We are proud and honored to be hosting this world-class automotive event. Motor Bella will allow journalists, industry executives and the public to interact with vehicles in a fully dynamic and experiential format, well beyond the limitations of static displays. As the largest Private Garage community in the world, we at M1 Concourse share the enthusiasm for creating a unique automotive environment built specifically for car enthusiasts.” North added, “We see this outdoor experience at M1 as a bridge to the future. One that will continue to evolve as we explore new ways of presenting mobility and as we navigate through these unprecedented times. We are very cognizant of the importance and impact our show and our events have on the state and the entire metro Detroit area. This will always be part of our considerations for the future.”
Dates for the 2021 Motor Bella are: • Press Preview, Tuesday, Sept. 21 • AutoMobili-D, Tuesday, Sept. 21 through a half-day Thursday, Sept. 23 • Industry Preview, Wednesday, Sept. 22 and a half-day Thursday, Sept. 23 • Public Show, Thursday, Sept. 23 through Sunday, Sept. 26.
A charity initiative, which will continue the NAIAS’ and Detroit Auto Dealers Association’s longstanding commitment to children and families in need, will also be part of the six-day Motor Bella.
Major auto shows are an excellent place to begin shopping for that new 2021-22 vehicle or just to browse if you are dreaming about your next new vehicle. These events provide the convenience of visiting virtually all of the vehicle manufacturers' displays, only in one large facility.
