2018 VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT 2.0T SE w/TECHNOLOGY
By Bob Kroupa
By Bob Kroupa
Recently we took delivery of VW's mid-size Passat for our weekly review and test drive. This long-term model, introduced in 1973, is now in its 8th generation! In fact Volkswagen announced on May 8, 2018 they have now achieved a production milestone with the completion of the 700,000th VW Passat assembled in Chattanooga, TN.
Our 'walk-around' of the vehicle with its Tourmaline Blue Metallic exterior paint presented a clean, smart looking profile. Most notable was the classic design lines of a four-door sedan with its traditional grill, the VW logo proudly displayed front and center. Enhancing the curb appeal of this favorite VW classic were the four gleaming ten 18" spoke alloy wheels with all season tires.
Opening the front and rear doors left us with the WOW! factor which we had not anticipated: the Passat has an abundance of driver and passenger room. In fact, the rear leg room is very much like that of a full size sedan. This is accomplished without any loss of trunk capacity that measures 15.9 cubic feet with the folding rear seats in the upward seating position. In the fold-down position, the hauling capacity is virtually doubled.
As we reviewed the Monroney (window sticker) we were impressed with the list of standard features on our Passat SE w/Technology model. Exterior features included automatic LED headlights, daytime running lights and taillights, rain-sensing front wipers and a power tilting and sliding sunroof.
Inside, we noted dual zone automatic climate control, front and rear heated seats, definitely not an industry standard but very welcome. The driver's seat also is equipped with 6-way power lumbar support and the front passenger's seat is equipped with the 6-way manual setting. The interior sports V-Tex leatherette seating surfaces and carpeted floor mats front and rear.
The Technology designation reflected an abundance of safety, driver convenience and entertainment features with the likes of a rear view camera system, park distance control (front and rear), forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking, blind spot monitor with rear traffic alert, and adaptive cruise control. The convenience features include remote start, hands-free trunk open, keyless access for front doors and push-button engine start.
Entering the cabin for our test drive we found the seats, front and rear, to be quite comfortable with ample room for five adult passengers. The dash layout was straight-forward and easy to use. Passat's infotainment system provided today's innovation features for the entire family. Included was a 6.3" touchscreen navigation system with AM/FM/HD radio and CD player with dual UBS inputs, aux-in and voice control, Bluetooth connectivity and a Sirius XM Satellite radio subscription. Also, VW's compatible smartphone with Apply CarPlay, Android Auto or Mirror Link to access select apps on the touchscreen display. From streaming music to mobile apps, it can be accessed on the touchscreen.
Our Passat was powered by a new 2.0 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine rated at 174 HP and 184 lb-ft of torque. The engine is coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission driving the front wheels.
Around town driving was done with ease, good visibility and parking assist monitors. Notable was the lack of outside cabin noise.
Driving onto the Interstate with a posted speed limit of 70 MPH, we found the 2.0 liter engine quite adequate to bring the Passat up to the posted speed limit to merge with existing traffic.
As we reached the foothills of North Carolina, with moderate turns and hills, the Passat again 'was at home' handing these road conditions with any driver concerns.
All of our driving was done within the speed limit, best described as comfortable cruising. Knowing this was not a performance machine, we respected that there was no need to push the Passat to the 'limits'. We found the Passat to be a user friendly passenger vehicle with a larger interior and more technology and features than expected.
We drove the Passat for 268 miles, registering 33.4 miles per gallon of fuel. The manufacturer's specs indicate 25 city/36 highway/ 29 average MPG.
The last hightlight for the Passat is their revised warranty. The transferrable new Vehicle Limited Bumper to Bumper Warranty covers the owner for six years or 72,000 miles - whichever comes first.
The base price of the Passat is $22,995. Our test drive vehicle with all of the features listed for $30,445 including the destination charge.
BOTTOM LINE: The 2018 Volkswagen Passat 2.0T SE w/Technology is definitely worth a trip to your VW dealership when looking for that all-inclusive family sedan.

2018 BMW M5
By Jim Jackson
BMW returns the iconic M5 to the street after a year hiatus with added horsepower and its first all-wheel drivetrain. The 2018 BMW M5 all-wheel drive system is rear bias with 4WD, 4WD Sport and 2WD settings that allows the driver to enhance or even shut it off for more dynamic rear-drive performance.
Special red steering wheel-mounted switches marked M1 and M2 delivers program specific drive mode choices to the operator while in motion.
The M1 thumb switch sets the suspension to a relaxed feel with light steering effort for highway cruising, while M2 sets both steering and suspension up for aggressive maneuvering, loosing the stability control and activating the 4WD Sport mode.
On the business end breaths a 4.4 liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine generating 600 horsepower and 553 pound-feet of torque at 1800 rpm. that catapults the 4,370 pound mid-size sport sedan 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds.
An 8-speed automatic transmission replaces its predecessor’s 7-speed dual-clutch automatic and 6-speed manual gearbox. Optional carbon-ceramic brakes ($8500) rein the forward momentum.
The sixth-generation BMW M5 is actually lighter than the previous model despite the added weight of the xDrive all-wheel drive system. A carbon fiber roof panel helps to shed the pounds.
A control button on the console allows the driver to change the throttle response and suspension damping from “Efficient” mode through “Sport” and “Sport-Plus” settings for a customized driving experience. Body roll is minimal regardless of setting chosen. A “Comfort” mode delivers a nice ride quality, particularly on the interstate.
Use of a prudent throttle yields fuel economy of 21 miles per gallon on the highway. With the aid of an automatic Start/Stop feature, the M5 can achieve 15 mpg around town.
Interior room is spacious for a quartet of adult passengers with good head and legroom throughout the cabin. Fit and finish is superb. The controls take some getting use to as most of the typical tasks are operated from a center controller on the console. In a number of cases, I found the daily operation a distraction. The commitment of ownership and frequent daily use will reduce that diverted attention to a commonplace routine.
My test car came with an extra $4000 Executive Package that included soft-close automatic doors, rear sunshade, front ventilated seats, front and rear heated seats, 4-zone climate control front massaging seats, wireless charging, rear view camera, active park distance control and surround view with 3D imagery.
With a base price of $102,600, the car should have had that package standard making the 2018 BMW M5 truly the “Ultimate Driving Machine”.
Other mandatory costs require a $1000 Gas Guzzler Tax and $995 Destination Charge for an actually MSRP of $104,595.

2018 Kia Stinger Sportback
By Jim Jackson
NORTH HOLLYWOOD, Calif. – Kia makes a beeline for the Sportback market with the premiere of the 2018 Kia Stinger. The Kia Stinger joins the midsize 5-door hatchback class occupied by such members as Audi S5 Sportback, BMW 440i Gran Coupe and V-6 Porsche Panamera seated in the front row.
Kia’s rear-drive newcomer enters the Grand Touring (GT) arena with Stinger 2.0T and Stinger GT 3.3T models - each available with upgrade versions and all-wheel drive.
Stinger 2.0T is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine that delivers 255 horsepower while the Kia Stinger GT 3.3T delivers 365-hp from its 3.3L twin turbo V-6 power plant. Both are managed by an 8-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters.
I tested the Stinger GT 3.3T equipped with all-wheel drive over the curve-laden Angles Crest Highway through hill country outside Los Angeles. Stinger’s rear-biased AWD system is a silent ally on twisty roads automatically sending up to 50-percent of power to the front wheels for surefooted grip under spirited driving conditions.
Smart, Eco, Comfort, Sport and Custom driving modes tailor a different setup for throttle response, steering feel, transmission shifts, adaptive suspension and stability control. I utilized the Sport mode and paddle shifters for a driver-directed corner carving experience to maximize engine power and minimize braking with torque vectoring (AWD) for superb handling and control.
Brembo high-performance brakes come standard on Stinger GT.
Inside, Kia Stinger boasts a 5-occupant cabin with ample room to accommodate four adults. However, Stinger’s sloping sportback roofline challenges headroom for rear seat riders over six-feet tall.
GT’s front and rear seat cushions are nicely bolstered with supple upholstery to keep all comfortably in place for a trip across switchbacks or cross country. Knee, hip and legroom is generous front and back.
Stinger’s gauge cluster and instrumentation is simple with straight forward displays that are easily read at-a-glance. An available 720-watt 15-speaker Harman Kardon premium audio system surrounds all occupants with soothing concert hall fidelity.
Cargo capacity behind the back seat measures 23.3 cubic feet. Folding the 60/40- split rear bench down exposes 40.9 cu-ft of carrying space.
The 2018 Kia Stinger ranges from $31,900 to $49,200 across its five model lineup. AWD runs another $2,200. Add $900 for freight.

2017 BMW 540i
By Jim Jackson
By Jim Jackson
German automaker BMW brings its seventh-generation 5-Series to market with the 2017 BMW 530i 4-cylinder and 540i 6-cylinder engine sedans. Both come with choice of either a rear- or all-wheel drivetrain.
Recently, I tested the rear-drive 2017 BMW 540i priced at $56,450 with an add on M Sport Package ($2600) that includes unique body trim, lowered suspension with 19-inch wheels (20-inch optional), a sport steering wheel and special interior trim.
BMW equips its 540i “Ultimate Drive Machine” with a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder engine that generates 335 horsepower mated to an 8-speed automatic transmission.
Although the 5-Series is a popular player in the BMW portfolio, I’m not convinced the 4- and 6-cylinder engine versions should be deemed as “ultimate” with V8 and V12 engine offering in their product line.
Select imput customizes the driving experience with a dial on the center console that adapts the Driving Dynamic Control to driver-selected Sport, ECO, PRO and Comfort settings. Configurations with Sport and Sport-Plus adjusts the steering sensitivity, suspension firmness and throttle response. Switching over from Comfort to Sport modes is seamless with instant change felt in the overall responsiveness. Active air suspension and active roll stabilization system keeps body roll in check, particularly when using Sport mode.
This 3,847 pound 540i is composed and well balanced with power distribution that is easily managed at any speed regardless of engine output. BMW thoughtfully keeps the forward momentum in check by providing a head-up display that reflects onto the driver-side windshield to show the road speed limit. A secondary number in view turns red to warn if the mile per hour is exceeded.
Inside, up to five occupants are treated to luxurious surroundings with soft-touch surfaces and a rich mix of wood or aluminum accents. Seat cushions are plush with just the right amount of hip and side bolster support for a pleasant trip across town or cross-country. Head and legroom is ample for riders of six-foot stature.
My 540i test car came with Mocha Nappa leather upholstery for an additional $1000 that replaces the standard Senca Tec material. A power trunklid, power rear-window sunshade and Apple CarPlay smartphone compatibility are stand alone extras.
Audiophiles may opt for a premium Bowers and Wilkins audio system ($4,200) to replace the 540’s standard AM/FM/CD/MP# system with HD radio. Other standard features include adaptive LED headlights, 18-inch alloy wheels, a moonroof, front sport seats with 16-way adjustment and memory settings, BMW’s Fatigue and Focus Alert system, automatic climate control, navigation and a 10.2-inch touchscreen. BMW’s iDrive 6.0 system governs navigation, audio and other cabin functions with use of a center console control. Voice commands may also be used to carry out functions typically operated through iDrive.
Price for the 2017 BMW 540i midsize sedan starts at $56,450. Add $995 for freight.

2017 AUDI A4 SEDAN - Luxury Midsize
By Bob Kroupa
By Bob Kroupa
When our test drive Audi arrived we knew we were in for a real treat. We were absolutely right and quickly learned why the A4 is Audi's top seller with 34,687 units sold in the US during 2016.
It was immediately apparent this was no base model but rather one with the latest, strikingly designed details of their all-new model. The traditional grill have been enhanced and show off the four interlocking rings which continue to be the very recognizable trademark of the Audi brand. The muscular looking wheel arches add a new dimension along with a new belt line that flows from the LED headlights to the rear of the vehicle. Adding to the 'WOW!' factor was the optional 18" 5-spoke dynamic designed wheels.
As a side note, we received several positive comments from bystanders on our exterior paint, a stunning Scuba Blue metallic, a $575 paint option.
Inside the cabin, the line of vision reflects a door-to-door strip of horizontal vents on the upper dash capped by a large fixed 8.3" center infotainment screen. When you add the comfortable Atlas Beige sport leather seats with Black interior trim, it is clear you are seated in Audi's newest luxury sedan. The front seating area is spacious with ample body room and head clearance. We also noted ample leg room for the rear passengers that can seat three adults comfortably. Interior highlights include a 3-spoke multifunction steering wheel and ambient LED lighting, three-zone climate control, 8-way power front seats and a power sunroof for added luxury and comfort.
Driver focused technologies include one of our favorites, a full color heads-up display showing more information beyond the digital speedometer. Another great feature is the Audi virtual cockpit that features a large 12.3" full map display placed directly in front of the driver for easy viewing and navigating the road ahead. Another cool 'WOW!' factor.
The infotainment system included two UBS ports, Bluetooth, and navigation as well as added Apple Car Play, Google Android Auto, Audi Connect and was enhanced with the optional Prestige Package with Sirius XM All Access and 3D Bang & Olufsen Surround Sound System with 19 speakers for 755 Watts of output!
This all-wheel drive A4 powered by Audi's Turbo charged 2.0 liter TFSI four cylinder engine pumps out 252 HP and 273 lb-ft of torque. The engine is coupled with Audi's 7-speed S tronic dual clutch transmission. Fuel economy was rated at 27/24/31 MPG (combined/city/highway). A standard Audi drive select feature includes four modes; comfort, auto, dynamic and individual which allows the driver to change gear shift points, steering damper control and cruise control settings.
Our test drive satisfied our top-notch option of the Audi product. Entering the Interstate, the 0-60 MPH performance of under six seconds took us to the posted 70 MPH speed limit in a 'flash'. The turbo and transmission handled the power surge flawlessly with no power lag and instantaneous shifting. Reaching the mountains, the Audi A4 handled the sharp turns with ease and with no body roll. It was apparent the optional adaptive damping suspension worked perfectly.
This 287 mile test drive also included city driving which we rated as quite comfortable and quiet-no road noise. The only issue we had was an initial use of the cruise control due to an awkward placement down left under the steering wheel.
Safety features were in abundance in the A4 with the usual array of airbags including driver and front passenger knee airbags. The latest safety technology included adaptive cruise control, rear cross traffic alert, Audi pre-sense city, Audi pre-sense basic, traffic sign recognition, automatic crash notification, Audi active lane assist, parking system plus top view and backup camera.
The base price of our test drive Audi A4 was $39,400. With the options packages and destination charge the total prices was $52,325.
BOTTOM LINE: The Audi A4 is a very fine automobile with numerous WOW! factors worthy of a purchase consideration for those who value safety, performance, luxury and elegance in one package.

2017 Mazda 6 - QUALITY, PERFORMANCE AND ECONOMY
by Bob Kroupa
by Bob Kroupa
As the Mazda Mid-Size Sedan arrived and rolled down the driveway we were immediately impressed with the eye-catching body design. Most appealing to us was the muscular side sheet metal upward sweep that starts midway on the front door and rises over the 19" neatly designed alloy front wheels and fading over the front LED headlights. Also stylish were the power side mirrors with front facing turn lamps.
The WOW! factor continued with the front design highlighted by the front grill with lower chrome trim that flows upwards to the LED's. Below the grill is a blackened secondary grill flanked by two chrome running light indentations.
A chrome strip midway across the trunk lid smacks of chrome designs used to enhance the rear appearance of the vehicle. The Mazda logo is proudly displayed above the chrome strip. Completing the rear appearance is the dual exhaust finished with bright tips.
Opening the door of the cabin we were treated to bright White Parchment Nappa Leather heated power sport seats with a Black contrasting dash and cabin trim including the headliner. Our Grand Touring model had an array of standard features. Included were the 7" color touch screen display, MAZDA CONNECT information system, navigation system, Bluetooth hands free phone/audio, rearview camera, power moon roof and a unique retractable active display (HUD) mounted on the upper dash. From an entertainment perspective we found the BOSE AM/FM/HD/SAT with eleven speakers.
The rear cabin had a 60/40 folding seat combination. Notable was the ample room for rear seat passengers and the heated seat option. The trunk space was rated at 14.8 cubic feet of cargo space and included two convenient release pulls to lower the rear seats from the trunk space to accommodate extra cargo.
An important factor was inclusion of Mazda's standard safety and security features like anti-theft engine immobilization, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert and radar cruise control. Add the full array of airbags for front and rear passengers and you are ready for a safe trip. Just remember to buckle up your seat belts!
Our Mazda was powered by the standard front wheel drive Skyactive-G 2.5 liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine that pumps out 184 horsepower. It was paired with their 6-speed automatic transmission with manual shift and Sport Mode. From an economy standpoint, the fuel rating is 26/35/29 MPG (City/highway/combined), quite impressive for a mid-size sedan.
Our Mazda 6 ride and drive proved to be a great driving experience. The journey began with a 187 roundtrip ride from the flat NC Piedmont of Greensboro northwest to the Blue Ridge Parkway. Our route took us on city streets, the Interstate, county rural roads and included a steep climb to the High Country of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This route provided us with firm and comfortable city driving. Reaching the Interstate allowed us to test the vehicle's acceleration entering the Interstate and passing slower vehicles within the 65 MPH speed limit. The Mazda 6 was quite responsive, more like a 6-cylinder rather than the four banger. In addition, the quick shifting of the automatic transmission was notable and effective.
The handling and performance of this mid-size sedan really came into play as we started our mountain climb with numerous sharp curves. Mazda's new G-Vectoring Control system was quite evident as we entered each initial corner turn and throughout the turn by adjusting power delivery and shifting vehicle weight. Again, the Mazda WOW! factor was at work.
Our trip can be termed a fun and safe drive. In addition the economics of this trip was notable as we registered 34.9 MPG on our 187 mile drive. This is quite remarkable for a mid-sized sedan with varying road conditions.
Our test vehicle had a base price of $30,695; optional equipment and destination charges brought the total to $34,530. The entry price for the Mazda 6 is $21,945.
BOTTOM LINE: The Mazda 6 is definitely worthy of a consideration for your next mid-size four-door sedan. It provides features, styling, performance and economy at the highest level!

2017 FORD FUSION SPORT: WOW! 325 HP!
By Bob Kroupa
By Bob Kroupa
Our test vehicle this week was a 2017 Ford Fusion Sport 4-Door Sedan. At a glance, it was just another 4-Door Sedan seemingly no different from all the numerous other 4-Door Sedans in the marketplace. But wait a minute! This one seemed to be a bit different.
The body sheet metal had a trimline running from the rear fuel-filler door to the front LED headlight. Add the spear-like projection from the lower rear of the back door to the lower front door and you would say, what a neat touch. And then looking more closely at the Black Tarnish (Gray) painted 19" wheels we could see how well they blended with the Magnetic Metallic (Dark Silver) exterior paint on the body, and we were definitely impressed.
Anchoring the front profile was a smart looking conventional gloss-black grill with a chrome surround. Then, raising our eyes a bit, there it was mounted above the grill - the traditional FORD blue oval logo. Finishing the front view are LED running lights and fog lights.
The rear profile featured horizontal tail lights and a chrome connection strip, a rear spoiler and twin dual exhausts with quad tips which indicated "Pay Attention!"
And pay attention we did. The Fusion Sport is powered by a 325-hp, 2.7 liter twin turbocharged V6 with 380 lb.-ft. of torque. This powerhouse engine is coupled with a heavy duty 6-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. Add the standard all-wheel drive and you have quite a power package with the 'WOW!' factor in a 4-door family sedan. It reminded me of Clark Kent transforming (under the hood) to Superman!
Timing was perfect for our test drive with a trip to Asheville, NC. The majority of the trip was spent on Interstate 40 with speed limits in the 65-70 MPH range. Our 325-hp Fusion was 'up to the trip' and we were able to exercise the performance ready engine on numerous occasions on the interstate.
We enjoyed the 'tuned' exhaust that has an amplified sound as it talked to this driver while in the performance mode. Being a 'noise' guy, this was perfect. It really seemed like this Fusion Sport begged to be driven!
Approximately 15 miles outside Asheville, the speed limit drops to 55 MPH and we left the flatland behind to begin our climb up to the base of the Blue Ridge Mountains. This was the perfect time to engage the Sport mode button on the rotary shifter mounted on the center console (rather than the traditional steering column).
The Sport mode sharpened the throttle response, gear shifting and adaptive damping of the suspension system. The 55 MPH speed limit was a breeze sailing around and up the road curves. Most likely, the Fusion could have handled the curves tightly even with another 10 MPH. The traffic was such that day that we did not have to test the brake system on the Sport that included larger rotors and brake pads.
Arriving quickly and safely in Asheville, we spent some time evaluating our drive. The cabin of the Fusion was designed to accommodate the driver and passengers with a quiet, comfortable ride. Front Sport heated seats were leather trimmed with suede insert which enhanced the smooth ride. Rear passengers were treated to ample room as well as heat and A/C ducts.
Included in the cabin was Ford's SYNC 3 System. The Entertainment Center included XM as well as a 12-speaker Sony Audio System. Navigation was provided as an option and is a great feature on trips.
Safety is always at the top of our list and the Fusion had the standard array of air bags for the driver and passengers. Today's technology takes safety to the next level with Blind Spot Detection, Lane Departure, Cross Traffic Alert and Adaptive Cruise Control features. These were included as an option package but we hope these features will become standard in the future, much as air bags are today.
Our vehicle was optioned with Enhanced Active Park Assist, great in a city like Asheville were street parking spaces are at a premium. We let the Park Assist program do the parallel parking in tight space!
Our Fusion Sport model had a base price of $33.475, bottom line with options and destination charge, the total cost was $40,955. Ford's mileage rating is 17/26 (city/highway) MPG.
BOTTOM LINE: During 2016 the Ford Focus was Ford's top selling 4-door sedan with 168,789 units sold. The 2017 Ford Fusion Sport is definitely worthy of a purchase consideration.

2015 BMW X4 Sport Coupe
by Ron Beasley
by Ron Beasley
The all-new 2015 BMW X4 is a bigger hatchback version of the X3 and if you found that one appealing, this crossover four-door
“coupe” will make you salivate with anticipation. The X4 basically rides on the same platform as the popular X3 and it was designed for style and performance rather than utility. It’s in the league of competition as such other small luxury crossovers as the Range Rover Evoque, Porsche Macan and the new Lincoln MKC.
The large air intakes on the front end and the character lines in the front apron, the signature BMW twin headlights and front fog lights (both optional with LED technology) give the X4 a strong visual presence on the road. The roofline reaches its highest point above the driver and then drops smoothly to the trailing edge of the tailgate, a design characteristic of a classic sport coupe.
The BMW signature line that usually runs along the flanks of models is split on the X4. The first section rises from the front wheel arches to the rear door handles, while the second part of it draws the eye to the muscular design of the rear wings. The rear end completes with L-shaped LED lights and diffuser-
look styling.
For power, there’s a choice of three gas engines and three diesels. Base power is a turbocharged 240 hp 2.0-liter four cylinder in the X4 xDrive28 (48/52/55). For more power, the turbocharged 3.0-liter 300 hp straight-six X4 xDrive35i (26/41/34 mpg) is a nice option. A four-cylinder 190 hp engine unit is also available. The X4 comes standard with xDrive all-wheel drive. All are mated to an eight-speed Steptronic automatic transmission with paddle shifters. The xDrive28 clocks 0-60 mph in 6.0 seconds, while the xDrive35i does it in 5.2 seconds.
Available is BMW’s EfficientDynamics technology package that minimizes fuel consumption and emissions with such features as the Auto Start Stop function and Brake Energy Regeneration. Also available as an option are fourth-generation reduced rollingresistance tires.
The new X4 is loaded with technology, including a full-color BMW Head-Up Display, the anti-dazzle High Beam Assistant and Driving Assistant Plus including Lane Departure Warning, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go function, preventive pedestrian protection and a Collision Warning system
that will apply the brakes with anything up to maximum stopping power as required. The optional ConnectedDrive Services lets you sign up for innovative items such as Real Time Traffic Information (RTTI).
The 2015 BMW X4 is priced from $45,625 for the xDrive28 model to $48,925 for the xDrive35i.

2015 HYUNDAI SONATA SPORT 2.0T
By Bob Kroupa
My recent test drive of the Sonata Sport 2.0T sedan left me with the proverbial "WOW!" factor. This enthusiasm was echoed by my rear seat passengers on a hour-long trip to the mountains.
The first look at this new sedan grabs your interest with its fluid sculptured exterior styling combined with sweeping side belt lines that continue to separate this model from the competition in the mid-size sedan segment. The chrome exterior door handles sport welcome lights, side rocker panels are accented with chrome molding and 18" wheels all add to the curb appeal of the Sonata Sport. Even the rear of the vehicle is enhanced with quad-chrome exhausts and a rear spoiler. For me as a traditionalist, the chrome detailed grill is just perfect.
Inside the cabin there is a unique heated steering wheel with a squared-off bottom that provides additional lap room. I certainly appreciated this touch as I got into the car. The driver can also select three modes of steering 'feel': ECO, Normal or Sport, with a simple touch of a button on the center console.
Smart looking leather seats with contrasting color stitching have a heated/cool selection and the rear passengers are also treated to heated seats. Our rear passengers found the seating quite comfortable including ample leg room. Their comments were interesting and they asked if 'this was Hyundai's top of the line luxury sedan?' They were incredulous when they discovered all these great features are part of the standard package.
Under the hood is where the fun really begins. The Sport 2.0T model is powered by a 2.0 liter turbo gasoline direct injection four-cylinder engine. In an effort to obtain maximum MPG, this sedan is fitted with a four-cylinder engine which is again in vogue. But not only have they gone mainstream, this 'four banger' engine pumps out 245 HP!
Maneuvering in traffic as well as accelerating on the highway (of course, within the posted speed limit) can only be termed exhilarating. This Hyundai Sonata turbo really is one smooth and powerful ride. Coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission with shift-o-matic and paddle shifters, it is quite a complete package!
All this being said, fuel economy is respectable with 23 MPG in the city, 32 on the highway and 26 combined/overall.
The Sport is equipped with advanced safety technology with multiple air bags for the driver and passengers including a knee bag for the driver. In addition, Blind Spot Detection with Rear Cross-traffic Alert and Rear Camera are standard features.
Other standard features include a AM/FM/SIRIUS XM/CD/MP3 premium audio system with input jacks to access your I-pod through audio controls, display track and artist information. It even changes as it plays.
Our test vehicle had the optional Ultimate Package that included the Panoramic Sunroof, Navigation with 8" display, Lane Departure and Warning and Forward Collision Warning.
Base price of the Sport 2.0T with all these features is a very affordable $28,575. Our test vehicle with the optional packages and destination charge was $34,460.
We would be amiss if we did not mention Hyundai's Warranty Program, one of the best in the industry: 10-year/100,000 Mile Powertrain; 5-year/60,000 Mile New Vehicle; and, 5-year/ Unlimited Miles with 24-hour Roadside Assistance.

2015 Chrysler 200
By Jim Jackson
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ “Imported from Detroit” credo adds the midsize 2015 Chrysler 200 to their portfolio of European-based cars.
Built off the foundation of the Italy’s Fiat-built Alfa Romeo Giulietta, the redesigned 2015 Chrysler 200 brings a racy new look to the American brand’s sedan segment. Fronting the view is a two-tier grille bookended by pulled-back headlamps with optional LED lighting elements. Chrysler 200’s sculpted bodywork and a fast-sloped roofline leads its profile to a stylized rear end with a lipped deck-lid and trim horizontal taillights for a sexy appearance unmatched in its price segment.
The front-wheel drive Chrysler 200 comes dressed in LX, Limited, S and C trim levels starting at $21,700. Chrysler 200’s volume leader is the Limited model priced at $23,225. The sporty 200S crosses the bottom line at $24,495 followed by the up-level Chrysler 200C at $25,995. Buyers can choose a 3.6-liter V6 engine with a spirited 295 horsepower (all levels except LX) over the base 2.4L Tigershark four-cylinder that builds 184 hp. Both engines are paired to an efficient nine-speed automatic transmission with forward and reverse gear selections managed by a large rotary dial on the center console.
Chrysler’s nine-speed gearbox helps yield 23 miles per gallon/city and 36 mpg highway with the 2.4L engine and 19/32 respectively for the V6. All-wheel drive is available on V-6 models for $2,200. However, the added AWD traction benefit drops fuel economy to 18/29 mpg. The V6 offers plentiful punch off the line and when outfitted with AWD sends up to 60 percent of the engine power to the rear wheels for added bite on slippery road surfaces.
Each of the 2015 Chrysler 200 models carry straight forward cabin architecture with a clean instrument display, easy to reach switchgear and soft touch surfaces on the dash and door panels. Chrysler 200’s quarters are thoughtfully designed to manage storage of personal gear with a large glove box that can hold a labtop or tablet. A divided center arm rest conceals small electronic devices while a floor level pass-through area provides an ideal place to stow a purse. Interior space is plentiful front and back with a comfortable ride quality delivered from a tuned suspension that soaks up road imperfections. Seat cushions are wide and nicely padded for a summer road trip or the daily commute. Road and wind noise is well isolated from the cabin making the five-occupant confines noticeably quiet.
The 2015 Chrysler 200 stays ahead of the cross-town competition with fresh looks and a new level of refinement brought to its class as one in every six new cars sold in the U.S is a midsize.
