2023 Hyundai Elantra Limited
By Larry Rust
The Elantra has been in Hyundai's line-up for several decades. It has gone through many generations of redesign and upgrades to compete in the compact marketplace.
Trim levels available in 2023 are the SE, SEL, N-Line and the Limited. My first test drive turned out to be the Limited version. On my initial walk around, I noticed the dominant looking black slotted grill below a large Hyundai emblem. In each corner is an LED headlight which only takes a small portion of the front end prominence. Larger views of the headlights come from the sides of the vehicle. The standard 5-spoke, 17-inch alloy wheels are nice looking with a two tone finish. The exterior color is called Electric Shadow (Grey). The more I looked at the exterior of this vehicle, the more this color really grew on me. The impressive styling continues along the sides of the vehicle and to the rear as well. Added to the styling is a standard power sunroof.
The interior is very attractive in white (Melange), grey and black. White looks great although I would choose black for practicality reasons. The dash features a nice 10.25 in. LCD fully digital instrument cluster as well as a 10.25 in. Info screen. The audio system is a Bose Premium System with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. I found the control buttons below the Info screen difficult to read because there was not enough contrast between the lettering and the background. Chrome accented thin line HVAC vents are to the left of the steering wheel and continue along the right side which gives the interior a streamlined look.
The center console has an angled grab bar which seems unnecessary. The interior is roomy and the rear seat space seems ample. The rear seat is a 60/40 seat allowing for hauling longer items as well as improved access to the trunk.
The power plant for this vehicle is a 2.0L , DOHC 16-valve, 4-cylinder engine at 147 HP and 132 lb-ft. of torque. Coupled to this engine is Toyota's Smartstream Intelligent Variable Transmission. Drive modes available are normal, sport, and Smart. The fuel economy is rated at 30 mpg city and 40 mpg highway for a combined rating of 34 mpg. The ride in this vehicle is fine but I feel that the Limited could use a boost in horsepower for responsiveness.
The safety equipment on the Limited is great. Forward collision-avoidance assist, parking distance warning, reverse parking collision avoidance assist, rear cross traffic collision avoidance assist, lane following and lane keeping assist, Smart cruise and rear camera name a few of the available features.
The conveniences in the cabin include one 12V outlet, USB ports, power driver's seat with lumbar, wireless charging pad, leather trimmed steering wheel, heated side mirrors with turn signal indicators, voice recognition, and front heated seats.
The warranty is the industry leading limited new vehicle 5 years or 60,000 miles, powertrain 10 years or 100,000 miles, 5 year unlimited road side assistance, and 3 years of complimentary maintenance.
The base MSRP for this vehicle is $26,350. With the added option of carpeted floor mats ($210) and delivery at $1,085, the total for the vehicle increases to $27,655. I find that this is a great value for a fully equipped Elantra Limited.

2019 Volkswagen Golf SportWagen 1.4T SE
By Bob Kroupa
During a recent trip to Ft. Lauderdale, FL, we had the opportunity to test drive a 2019 Golf SportWagen, with striking Night Blue Metallic Exterior paint, from the Volkswagen stable.
Our 'walk around' the SportWagen revealed that we were looking at a uniquely styled vehicle, without resembling any of the many crossovers on the road today. It's exterior provided excellent curb appeal with a sloping hood, updated front grill, large window treatment, functional roof rails and 17" aluminum-alloy wheels (included with the SE trim package.) The vehicle's low profile appeared to be custom bodied - neat!
We also noted one of VW's features, the proudly displayed VW logo on the rear tailgate, which doubled as the opening handle to this SportWagen rear tailgate. The rear load height was 24.8" with a width of 70.8", perfect for the placement of our luggage in the rear compartment with ample room rated at 30.4 cubic feet of space behind the second row seating. With the rear seats folded, 60/40 split configuration, this hauling space is a high 66.5 cubic feet.
Entering the cabin of our SportWagen, we found roomy twin bucket seats that were quite comfortable and equipped with power recline for both seats. However, the seat movement forward and backward as well as the height adjustments were manual. Power convenience would be a nice touch for this movement.
The center stack is angled toward the driver adding to driver enhancements along with simple, straight forward controls on the dash - nicely done. Our SE model had an 8" touchscreen infotainment system with the latest App-Connect offering users the ability to run select smartphone apps with the likes of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Also included are AM/FM/HD radio, CD player, Bluetooth connectivity and Sirius XM.
As we prepared for our initial drive we reviewed the safety features that included six airbags, front and side airbags for front passengers and side curtain air bags for outward seating positions. Also on our SE model were the latest driver-assistance technology that included Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring, Blind Sport Monitoring, Rear Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping System and High Beam Control. Worthy of mention was VW's Intelligent Crash Response System that shuts off the fuel pump, unlocks the doors and switches on hazard lights if the car in involved in certain types of collisions.
Driving the SportWagen in South FL was a real treat. Weather in the low 80's allowed us the opportunity to open the power tilting and sliding panoramic sunroof. The VW was the 'right size' for driving in city traffic as well as for parking.
Powered by an all-new front wheel drive 1.4 liter four-cylinder turbocharged and direct-injection TSI engine, rated at 147 horsepower and 284 lbs/feet of torque, this vehicle also had an automatic transmission that was standard with our SE trim package. This combination was perfect for our entry and merging with the I-95 speeding Interstate traffic.
We drove the VW for over 85 miles with the gas gauge showing little movement. The stated MPG stats reflected 27/36/31 for city/highway/combined MPG.
The base price for a 2019 Golf SportWagen starts at $21,895. Our test vehicle SE was well-equipped with desirable, convenient and safety features with a bottom line price of $30,890 that included the destination charge. It was noted that the SE is quite inclusive with no optional charges.
Ending on another high note is VW's 'The People First Warranty' which is 6 years/72,000 miles (whichever occurs first) New Vehicle Limited Warranty. The remainder of which can be transferred to a subsequent owner throughout its duration.
BOTTOM LINE: The VW Golf SportWagen is definitely worthy of a trip to your local dealer for a first-hand test drive experience!

2019 TOYOTA COROLLA "HATCHBACK" XSE
By Bob Kroupa
After being notified my scheduled test drive would be a Toyota Corolla, my immediate thought was 'it's time to downshift to a compact vehicle. Little did I know, my downshift thought would become a reality when the Corolla arrived.
Upon arrival of the Oxide Bronze Metallic exterior painted Corolla, I was quite impressed with its muscular stance. I first caught sight of the lowered hood with slim adaptive LED headlamps. Then I spotted the fog and running lights all connected to the front fenders and anchored by a broad black strip. And, finally I saw the Toyota logo in the center topping the oversized grill with a chrome surround. This was quite a powerful first glance!
When I got to the 18" machined wheels I knew we had a versatile all-new hatchback with great curb appeal. This glance turned to 'YES" as I realized what had been missing for years in the compact market segment and now I finally realized, the Corolla design team knows how to steal the drama from their competitors!
All that was even before I discovered the rear styling with its LED tail-lamps, rear upper bumper rub edge and chrome diffusers that resemble dual exhausts. The look, the feel, the visual image of this hatchback was far beyond expectation! And this was only the outside of the vehicle; I could hardly wait to get inside.
With the cabin door open, I noted the new supportive leather trimmed sport seats with 'heat' controls and contrasting stitching that carried throughout the cabin, a nice upscale touch. The dash was simply designed with a high resolution 8" touchscreen to access the Entune 3.0 apps, vehicle setting, audio controls, navigation and smartphone. The system is also Apple CarPlay compatible. The screen is mounted permanently midway above the center dash, however this position does not hamper the driver's vision.
Rear seating is adequate and will accommodate 6' tall passengers with ample head room, however leg room is a bit tight. The rear seat has a 60/40 split folding feature that allows for additional cargo space when required. Cargo hauling space is 18 cubic feet behind the rear seats, 23.3 cubic feet with the seats folded down.
As noted in our earlier 'downshift' comment, shifting gears, we were somewhat surprised to see a manual 6-speed transmission shifter in the center of the console. Upon further examination of the 'window sticker' we saw the new 6-speed gear box was a standard feature on the 2019 Hatchback. Also a new automatic, Dynamic-Shift CVT is available as a $1,100 option. The all-new 6-speed iMT (intelligent Manual Transmission) gearbox has a downshift rev-matching control feature. When used, the feature will automatically adjust engine revolutions when changing gears to insure smooth gear shifting. This is really a great feature for those who prefer a manual transmission.
From a safety perspective our hatchback was well equipped with 8 airbags and new active-safety technologies that included the following:
-Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Road Edge Detection, Road Sign Assist, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Automatic High Beams and Blind Spot Monitor.
-Star Safety System with the likes of ABS, Brake Assist and Smart Stop Technology.
Now it was time for the Corolla Hatchback's "FUN-TO-DRIVE" time! I hopped onto the nearby Interstate with a speed limit of 70 MPH knowing it was a perfect and safe roadway to test the hatchback's capability.
Reaching the posted speed limit was quickly accomplished shifting through the gears topping out in the 6th overdrive gear. Acceleration was ample in reaching the peak speed limit. In fact, keeping up with traffic at 70 MPH was effortless.
In addition, we had the opportunity to exit the Interstate and drive a few country roads and were quite pleased with our ability to 'hold the road' on sharp turns. This was due to the fine tuning of the suspension and steering enhancements that were modified on the all-new hatchback.
Fuel economy for the hatchback we drove was 28/35/31 MPG (city/highway/combined). The CVT MPG was a bit more according to the Toyota specs.
Base Price of our XSE was $22,990. Pricing for the base model is $19,990.
BOTTOM LINE: Our recommendation is to opt for the XSE trim model - check it out at your local Toyota Dealer.

2019 KIA FORTE EX SEDAN
By Bob Kroupa
Kia steps up to the plate with their all-new third generation compact sedan, the Forte.
At a glance, upon arrival for our test drive, the Forte presented a sporty appearance with its overall design enhancements. Much like the highly acclaimed Stinger fastback sport sedan, the design team stepped forward in their ability to present the consumer with another winner.
With further examination, the Forte revealed we had the top of the line trim package, the EX. Forte has four trim packages starting the FE, LXS, S and EX.
From an exterior perspective, the curb appeal was one of the highlights of the vehicle. Its long hood with parallel side creases was created by moving the cowl back five inches and a separated two piece grill with the upper signature tiger nose grill was centered between the newly designed headlights. A high belt line runs the length of the Forte to a position above the dual rear taillights. A short rear deck enhances its fastback muscular stance. Completing the exterior design are 17" alloy wheels.
Entering the cabin, we happily noted an abundance of space for the front and rear passengers. Rather than a compact sedan, we had the feeling we were seated in a mid-size sedan with ample leg room as well as headroom for the rear passengers. Seating was comfortable with well padded seats and notable lumbar support. In addition, both front seats included heated and ventilated controls.
The dash layout was user friendly with controls well marked for ease of operation. At opposite ends of the dash were two unique, circular air vents adding to the dash layout. At the top of the center stack is a permanent mounted 8" color touchscreen for infotainment selection and rear camera viewing. This large screen is positioned in a way that does not hamper driver road vision.
Infotainment features in our Kia Forte EX included AM/FM/MPS, Sirius XM, USB chargers, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Also a 'vintage' emergency brake pull lever is mounted on the center console - a nice retro touch!
Trunk cargo space is rated at 15.3 cubic feet. The rear folding seats, a 60/40 configuration, can be folded to accommodate additional cargo.
Our test drive met all expectations. The Forte is powered by a 2.0 liter Multi-Port Injection 4 Cylinder engine pumping out 147 HP and 132 lb./ft. of torque. The engine is coupled with an all-new Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT) resulting in a stated 34/30/40 MPH (combined/city/highway) for the front wheel drive vehicle.
Most of our driving was done on the Interstate with a posted 65-70 MPH speed limit. We achieved the stated 40 MPG on the highway, to our pleasure I might add.
The drive train was relatively quiet, attributed to the wrapping of the transmission case in a sound-insulating cover during build.
Acceleration was smooth and adequate when required during passing situations. Recorded suspension geometry provided a quick and nimble behind the wheel feel and evolutionary improvements were made to throttle and brake feel performance, yielding a smoother initial response at tip-in.
From a safety perspective, the Forte is well equipped. Standard features included dual front advanced airbags and seat mounted side airbags as well as full length curtain airbags. Traction control, electronic stability control, hill-start assent control and tire pressure monitoring, emergency braking and active lane control. The EX trim package also includes lane change assist, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot warning and adaptive cruise control.
The base price of the Forte is $18,580 including destination charges. Our Forte EX was priced at $26,200, however, it did include a special EX Launch Edition Package that included Harman Kardon Premium Audio Package, Navigation, Power Sunroof, Wireless Phone Charger, Forward Collision Avoidance, Parking Distance Warning, plus more.
Another important feature that sets Kia apart and in the company of the few nameplates to consider, is their leading class Warranty. The new vehicle warranty is 5 years/60,000 miles and the Powertrain warranty is 10 years/100,000 miles.
BOTTOM LINE: The KIA Forte EX is worthy of a trip to your KIA Dealer to check out one of their latest vehicles.

2019 Kia Forte
By Jim Jackson
PITTSBURGH - Kia heralds its third generation 2019 Forte with great acclaim as the Korean brand’s best-selling compact sedan. The automaker boasts that 30-percent of Forte buyers are first time vehicle owners.
For 2019, Forte comes with styling inspired by the ultra-sleek Kia Stinger brought to market last year. The likeness is strongest in the front with a long hood with similar headlamp design and fastback shape. Kia’s signature “tiger nose” grille remains a strong part of their portfolio’s design language. The 2019 Forte front end is stamped with a streamlined iteration of that signature grille feature.
Out back, styling takes a lofty swing at Stinger similarly with high-mounted tail lights that bookend Forte’s chiseled deck lid. Contrasting the light treatment are independent low-mounted rear directional signal lamps that look progressive in their placement, but may not be as visible to drivers expecting to see the turn signal flash in a more traditional location integrated with the rear lenses.
Kia Forte breaks the mold of tradition by bringing exciting design, value and performance to market with trim levels that begin with the value-driven Forte FE starting at $17,690 followed by LXS ($19,090), S ($20,190) and EX ($21,990) models on sale now. A limited production EX Launch Edition arrives this fall.
The entry-level Forte FE is outfitted with a six-speed manual transmission. Kia’s next-gen Continuously Variable (automatic) Transmission (CVT) is optional on FE for an additional $900 and standard on all other trim levels.
Kia’s newly developed Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT) is a first for the compact car segment, built in-house with chain-style development rather than the typical self-advancing type. It incorporates adaptive shift logic that behaves like a traditional automatic transmission with integrated shift progression creating an efficient self-shifting system without the long drone sound typically associated with a CVT.
Power across the 2019 Forte model line is provided by a sole 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine carry-over from 2018 that delivers 147 horsepower and 132 pound-feet of torque to the front-wheel drivetrain.
Fuel economy yields 27 miles per gallon/city and 37 mpg/highway on Forte FE equipped with manual transmission and up to 31/41 respectively for FE coupled to Kia’s IVT. All other Forte models reign slightly less at 30/40 mpg.
Normal, Sport and Smart drive modes can be driver manipulated via console-mounted switchgear. Sport holds the engine rpm longer before shifting – ideal for more aggressive driving or tackling curve-laden roadways. Smart mode switches between Normal and Sport as driving dynamics dictate.
Engine noise bleeds heavy into the cabin under hard acceleration but settles nicely once at cruising speed. Newly adapted adhesives and body sealing along with thicker window glass helps quell outside road noise and tire whine for improved cabin acoustics.
The 2019 Kia Forte is longer and wider than its predecessor resulting in greater interior space and larger trunk volume that now rivals a mid-size sedan with 15.3 cubic feet of capacity. Rear seatbacks can be released to fold flat for expanded cargo space to accommodate longer carrying needs.
Kia’s motor-driven steering system affords Forte a nimble feel on the road with good impute in town and across the interstate. A McPherson strut and front coil spring rate, coupled to a torsion beam rear axle garners a comfortable ride quality for up to five seat belted occupants. Two adults benefit best for good backseat hip, knee and legroom.
Up front, driver and front passenger are greeted by an 8-inch color touch screen, now standard across the Forte model line that displays driver control functions as well as the view from the backup camera. Forte S and EX models upgrade to Kia’s UVO eServices connectivity system. All models are smart phone ready with standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Buttons and dials on the center stack are easy to use with at-a-glance operation. The touch screen is equally simple to navigate.
A laundry list of standard equipment brings added value to the 2019 Kia Forte with creature comfort upgrades that include a tilt/telescopic steering column and dual-zone climate control. A wireless smart phone charging platform and 320-watt, eight-speaker Harmon Kardon sound system fused with Clari-Fi that restores audio signals lost to digital compression is optional on Forte EX.
All 2019 Forte models come standard with Forward Collision Avoidance Assist, Lane Keep Assist, Driver Attention Warning, Forward Collision Warning and Lane Departure Warning. EX trim enhances the list of niceties to include such safety features as Lane Change Assist and Rear Cross Traffic Alert along with Blind Spot Warning. Optional on EX is Adaptive Cruise Control, Parking Distance Warning and High Beam Assist.
The 2019 Kia Forte Launch Edition is bathed in Fire Orange paint, accented with a rear deck lid spoiler and 17-inch alloy wheels set in a graphite finish. It also comes equipped with all EX standard and optional equipment for the cost of $25,200. Add $895 across the Forte product line for freight.
2018 HYUNDAI ACCENT LIMITED

As posted on our autoresearchblog.com site under the category of NEW VEHICLE REVIEWS, we evaluate autos, trucks and SUV's that range in price from $15,000 to over $100,000. Each has features that are important to the buyer including drivetrain, safety, comfort, convenience, economy and, of course, PRICE.
This week's ride was a feature-rich compact, the 2018 Hyundai Accent Limited 4-Door Sedan. I normally receive an advance copy of the Monroney (Window Sticker). Scanning the Monroney for the Accent, I was impressed with the long list of features, note I said features, not billable options. The base price was $18,895. Oh sorry, I missed one option - the carpeted floor mats at $125! Adding freight and delivery charges of $885, we found a bottom line price of $19,995, under the $20,000 mark. As you will read, his car was not a stripped down model but loaded with desirable features.
The Accent arrived decked out in Frost White Pearl exterior paint with Beige interior and seats. The 2018 Accent is Hyundai's fourth generation model with an all new platform. At a glance one notes the expanded stance that is a bit longer, lower and wider. Hats off to the design team!
Our 'walk-around' the vehicle revealed Accents simple grill with horizontal bars and the Hyundai logo displayed in the upper center of the grill. The projection headlights with LED DRL flank the upper grill; and, side mirrors include a dual function with integrated turn signals and auxiliary encased mirrors for blind spot detection. Adding to the 'curb appeal' are 17 inch alloy wheels.
The rear profile includes LED tail lights, a built-in spoiler and a touch-free smart trunk release. One merely stands behind the truck for a few seconds with the key fob in your hand/pocket/purse - and the trunk lid opens!
The Accent was powered by a 1.6 liter GDI, DOHC 4-cylinder engine rated at 130 HP and 119 lbs.-ft. torque. The engine is coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission with Hyundai's Shiftronics.
Entering the cabin for our extended test drive we were impressed with the cabin enhancements. Fully loaded with the heated cloth seats, automatic climate controls, push button start, 7" color touchscreen with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, Smartphone, dual USB charging and auxiliary input jacks. Also the infotainment system included an AM/FM audio system with 6-speakers and Sirius XM Radio with a 90 day trial. The power sunroof added to the appearance and functionality of an upscale edition. The seating was comfortable with ample room including the 60/40 rear seats with fold down capability.
Prior to starting the engine, our routine is to check out the safety features of any vehicle. The Accent had the usual array of front, front/side impact and side curtain airbags. Electronic stability control with traction control, ABS, forward collision, avoidance assist and rearview camera with dynamic guidelines were also included. Also in the trunk was a compact spare tire.
Our ride and drive in city traffic was a breeze based on the vehicle's size. Despite the fact that this 'four banger' only rated at 130 HP, we found the throttle response to be more than adequate. Placing the vehicle in the Sport driving mode we entered the posted 70 MPH speed limit of the Interstate and the Accent brought us up to the posted speed limit for a smooth merge into the existing traffic.
On the country roads that included sharp turns over hilly terrain the Accent felt quite stable with a minimum of body roll. The driving dynamics of the Sport mode adjusted the steering effort and transmission control logic for enhance driving performance. Well done!
Our road trip was with the stated fuel economy rating of 28 city/38 highway and combined MPG of 32, another positive feature of this model considering the price of fuel.
Last comment is about the major importance of the Hyundai class-leading Warranty. The new vehicle warranty is 5 years/60,000 miles and the Powertrain warranty is 10 years/100,000 miles.
BOTTOM LINE: The Accent is definitely worth a trip to your local Hyundai Dealer to check out this feature-rich vehicle priced at under the $20,000 mark!

2018 Hyundai Accent SE
By Jim Jackson
Hyundai delivers style and affordability to the subcompact car market with the 2018 Hyundai Accent. This year, Accent grows larger with a longer wheelbase and wider body dimensions to offer more interior space and cargo volume.
Front seats are broad and well cushioned with adjustment that offers exceptional leg and headroom for occupants of six foot stature. The standard 60/40 split-folding rear seat accommodates two adults or a trio of toddlers in comfy confines with a slight forward movement of the driver and front passenger seats. When unoccupied, the rear back cushions can be released to fold into the cabin expanding the carrying capacity of Accent’s 13.7 cubic foot trunk.
Up front, instrumentation is configured with simple dials and switchgear that is easy to manipulate while on the move. The gauge cluster is clearly read and unobstructed by an open steering wheel design.
For 2018, Hyundai loses its 4-door hatchback in the Accent model line opting for the 4-door sedan priced at $14,995 with five-speed manual transmission.
I recently tested the base 2018 Hyundai Accent SE model with automatic transmission at $15,995 and was impressed with the list of standard features that include a 5.0-inch color touchscreen, Bluetooth, a USB port, rearview camera, power outside mirrors, remote keyless entry and 6-way driver seat with height adjustment. AM/FM audio system, tilt steering wheel with mounted audio and cruise control, air conditioning, dual vanity mirrors with sliding sun visors and one-touch triple turn signal are also provided at no additional charge.
Steel 15-inch wheels with tire pressure monitoring system capped with stylized wheel covers round out the no cost factory equipment.
The mid-level SEL receives an upgraded infotainment system with 7-inch touchscreen and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto functionality, dual USB ports, automatic headlamps and 15-inch alloy wheels for a cost of $17,295.
Accent Limited ups the ante with 17-inch wheels, auto emergency braking with forward collision warning, LED taillights, sunroof, key ignition, heated front seats, automatic climate control and hands-free auto-opening trunk for $18,895.
Destination charge runs $885 across the 2018 Hyundai Accent model line.
Momentum for the value driven Hyundai Accent comes from a sole 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine that puts out 130 horsepower for returned fuel economy of 38 miles per gallon on the highway and 28 mpg around town.

2018 Mini Cooper SE Countryman ALL4
By Bob Kroupa
By Bob Kroupa
Our call from Prestige, a company that provides excellent Concierge service, indicated they were bringing us a 2018 Mini Cooper SE Countryman for our "Let's Motor!" test drive.
Upon arrival, we were immediately impressed with the curb appeal of the Mini, decked out in the optional Melting Silver metallic exterior paint; Black colored roof and side mirror caps; and, 18" Black spoke alloy wheels with run-flat tires. This was a neat combination in the right color scheme.
The 'badging' of the Mini indicated it was special with its side designation of ALL4, an indication of its four-wheel drive capability. On both sides of the upper front fender was an oversized 'E' badge that indicated this was Mini-s plug-in hybrid vehicle. The driver's side badge was functional for the 110-220 volt cord to charge the battery. The full battery charge takes two-three hours using a 220 volt outlet, much lower with a 110 outlet. This charge provides a range of miles when fully charged and driving in the battery-only mode.
The Mini is powered by a Twin Power Turbo 3-cylinder gasoline engine with 134 HP and 162 lb/ft of torque. The electric motor adds 87 HP and 122 lb/ft torque. The gasoline engines drives the front wheels and the electric motor drives the rear wheels. From a transmission perspective, there is only one type available - a 6-speed automatic.
As evening set in, we needed to check out some stats in the owner's manual in the glove box. Upon opening the driver's door we immediately saw a neat Mini logo puddle lamp displayed on the pavement.
Reviewing the owner's manual glossary we noted an interesting section labeled bulb replacement. This section provided specific instructions and photos for replacing the brake light, turn signal and tail light bulbs. We saw this as a great touch given the complexity of today's vehicles!
Notable on our test drive was the comfort of our heated sports seats and the bolsters that provided a secure feeling reminiscent of sitting in a race car. So we started our test drive with a nearby run on the Interstate with a posted speed limit of 70 MPH. When a clearing of no oncoming traffic was insight we were able to implement the 'pedal to the metal' concept in the Sport driving mode and found the Mini up to the task. This is really quite a spirited vehicle and 0-60 MPH reports of 6-8 seconds with its total system output of 221 HP and 281 lb/ft of torque.
Our rural country roads and many turns through the foothills of North Carolina was really the fun aspect of our drive. The Mini was well equipped to handle the challenging roads in the Sport mode that tightens your steering while modifying the braking and acceleration of the ride.
In addition, the Dynamic Stability Control System used sensors to measure the steering angle, yaw and lateral acceleration to determine the direction you want to go. Then, if your Mini starts to stray, the DCS system kicks in by applying corrective brake pressure to individual wheels and adjusting engine torque.
On the return to home base we placed our Mini in the Green driving mode that enhanced fuel economy by optimizing fuel delivery, tweaks shift points and has a coasting feature that disengages the automatic transmission when your foot is off the gas.
The Mini Countryman has a stated fuel economy of 65 MPG with electric and gasoline power and 27 MPG with gasoline only.
Features of the test drive vehicle included an optional retractable head's up display (one of our favorite features), automated Parking Assistance, LED headlights with cornering feature, LED fog lights, ambient interior lights and rain sensor wipers. Also the rear split seats reclined and folded down with 47.4 cubic feet of storage room when folded. To open the rear lid we found a hand's free, foot activation capability under the rear bumper.
From an infotainment perspective, the Mini was well equipped with 8.8" center dash display, Mini Connected apps featuring Navigation, Bluetooth for phone and audio streaming, six-speaker audio system with AM/FM/HD radio, optional Sirius radio (one year subscription) UBS ports, aux-in ports and wireless charging pad.
Mini has addressed the safety features with eight air bags (2-front, 2-knee, 2 side front and 2 curtain air bags covering the front and rear upper sides. Also included is backup camera, adaptive cruise control, forward-collision warning and Dynamic Stability Control. However, Blind Spot Detection and Lane Departure is not available.
Warranty is limited Bumper to Bumper and Powertrain for four years/50,000 miles and complimentary scheduled maintenance for three years/36,000 miles. Hybrid component warranty is eight years/80,000 miles.
Our Mini has a base price of $36,800. With options and destination charges the price totaled $40,000. The Mini is eligible for a $4,000 US Federal credit.
BOTTOM LINE: It is worth a trip to your local Mini dealer to test drive the spirited dynamics of this special Hybrid. You will not be disappointed!

2018 KIA RIO EX 5DR
By Bob Kroupa
By Bob Kroupa
Just after I had finished reading all the details of the new 4th generation Kia Rio with all its eye-catching design, technology and passenger comfort - I found out I was scheduled to get one for my upcoming test drive! I was excited to see and drive the vehicle that has been penned at Kia's European and US design studios in collaboration with Kia's design base in Namyang, Korea. This was a nice coincidence just before the Olympic Games scheduled this February in Seoul.
When I finally laid eyes on the Rio Hatchback, it definitely met my design expectations and discovered this 2018 generation vehicle had been lengthened and features a longer wheelbase. I believe a vehicle's front end appearance sets the design stage. The Rio has the Kia's 'tiger-nose' grill extending to the new multi-reflector headlights that sweep well into the side profile view. This view includes side sculpting that is tastefully done and is set off by the multi-spoke 15" alloy wheels. The rear stance reflects a wider muscular profile with its shorter overhangs and thinner simple taillights.
This test drive model was the EX trim model that was well equipped. Opening the cabin door we were impressed with neat stitching on the Tricot cloth seats, center arm rest and the simplicity of the dash layout with its 7" touch-screen interface centered on the dash. The 7" screen really enhances the rear camera display. Additional features included AM/FM/MP3, Kia's UV03 Infotainment System that includes Android Auto/Apple Car Play Smartphone integration, Sirius XM, Bluetooth, USB ports and auxiliary jacks.
From a storage perspective, the center console offers a bi-level tray for portable 'stuff', a convenient storage tray at the front of the center console, under the dash and a large glove box compartment for vehicle binders and information.
The rear seat will accommodate three adults and ample room for hauling cargo with the 60/40 rear seats flat folded, rated at 32.8 cubic feet.
Reviewing the standard safety features we found six airbags, side-impact door beams, Electronic Stability Control, four-wheel ABS, Hill-start Assist Control and Vehicle Stability Management. In addition, our EX model included Autonomous Emergency Braking and the Forward Collision Warning System.
The 2018 Rio is powered by a Gamma 1.6 liter GDI four-cylinder engine with a 130 HP rating and 119lb./feet of torque. Coupled with the engine is a 6-speed manual or automatic transmission; our model was the 6-speed automatic.
The test drive was conducted on a city/Interstate route with speeds posted to 70 MPH. We found the front wheel drive Kia at 130 HP to be quite adequate. In fact, the 'around town' performance was more 'spirited' than expected. On the Interstate, keeping up with the traffic at 70 MPH was a breeze.
The ride was comfortable and the handling of the Rio left us with a secure feeling, all brought about by Kia re-engineering the suspension system. Well done!
Our 202 mile trip can be termed quite economical based on MPG achieved, 35 miles per gallon. Factory specs indicate 28/37/32 for city/highway/combined MPG.
Pricing of our Kia Rio EX 5DR Hatchback was $19,725, although the base entry price of a 2018 Kia Rio Hatchback is $14,920.
We would be amiss if we didn't mention Kia's class-leading Warranty Program:
- 10 year/100,000 mile Limited Powertrain Warranty
- 5 Year/60,000 mile Limited Basic Warranty
- 5 year/60,000 mile Roadside Assistance
BOTTOM LINE: The Kia Rio EX 5DR is a fun 'driver' with good value and warranties.

As the New Year begins, the 2018 model year vehicles are becoming available for review. Our current 'ride', a top- of-the-line Snowflake White Pearl Mazda3 5-Door Hatchback, was delivered for our evaluation.
As we eyed this new vehicle it was immediately apparent it was not the base model! Reviewing the Morroney we noted it was the Grand Touring model with an array of standard equipment, more than we had expected. From an exterior perspective (and much to our liking) is the simple grill with Black horizontal bars and a chrome surround with the Mazda logo centered at the top of the grill. Finishing off the front view are LED headlights and fog lights.
The side profile has neat subtle flairs over the front wheels, at the side rear tail lights and below the side doors. Adding the final touch are the 18" aluminum alloy wheels.
The rear view shows the wraparound LED tail lights while the dual bright tipped exhaust pipes add to the style and pizzaz.
Upon opening the door and sliding inside the cabin we were treated to heated sports seats in parchment leather that were well cushioned and comfortable. In addition, the heated seats had three settings, low, medium and high. The best part for us in terms of driving comfort was the heated steering wheel.
Looking around we quickly saw the 7" color screen located on top of the dash. This placement enhances the driver's sight lines rather than placing the screen lower in the dash. Looking straight forward we found one of our favorite features, the 'heads-up' display featuring a digital speed display. The infotainment features are controlled by a large rotary knob located on the console between the front seats. The features include audio, apps, phone and navigation. Our vehicle offered an array of entertainment with the Bose 9-speaker audio, Sirius XM Satellite Radio, USB inputs and Bluetooth.
The rear seat was adequate for three passengers, however the leg room was a bit tight for anyone over 6' tall. Hauling capacity was good with 60/40 folding rear seats with 47.1 cubic feet of storage when folded.
Our Mazda3 was powered by Mazda's Skyactiv-G 2.5 liter DOHC 4-cylinder engine developing 184 HP with 185 LB-FT torque. The engine was coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual mode.
Backing the vehicle out of the driveway was a breeze enhanced by the backup display on our colored 7' screen. Our 'road trip' took us on the Interstate, local country roads and mountain roads with many sharp turns. Notable for us was the performance aspect of the Mazda3, it was quite spirited!
Entering the Interstate and reaching the 70 MPH posted speed limit was effortless and a pleasant surprise. As we reached the mountains, Mazda's Skyactiv-Vehicle Dynamics with G-Vectoring Control added to the fun of driving. When cornering on the initial turn-in and throughout, the system works seamlessly by adjusting power delivery and shifting vehicle weight. Bottom Line: this vehicle has precise steering and better control. Well done, Mazda!
Our road test also reflected Mazda's economy commitment registering 31.8 MPG on our road trip of 135 miles. Factory specs reflect 26 City, 35 Highway and 30 miles per gallon combined.
From a safety perspective standard equipment on our Grand Touring model included Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Smart City Brake Support and optional equipment including Madza's Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure, Warning System, Lane Keep Assist Traffic Sign Recognition.
The base price of a 2018 Mazda3 Hatchback is just under $20,000. Our test vehicle was listed at $24,945. Options brought the total to $27,920.
BOTTOM LINE: The Mazda3 is a smart, good looking and fun driver for the car enthusiast and is loaded with all the 'bells & whistles'!

2017 KIA SOUL
By Bob Kroupa
By Bob Kroupa
Several factors should be considered when purchasing a new vehicle. Among them is the Warranty that provides months of trouble free driving. With Kia's vehicles, including the Soul model, you will be able to change the months to YEARS! Their limited basic warranty covers the Soul for a 5 year/50,000 mile period. The limited powertrain warranty is 10 years/100,000 miles. These are a segment leading warranty!
The Soul is a stylish, sporty 4-door hatchback that differs from your typical hatchback; note the neat exterior and interior Red trim on our photos. As of late, we have noticed many Soul's on the road. This should not come as a surprise since the Soul was Kia's sales leader in 2016 with 145,768 units sold.
For the 2017 model year, the FWD Soul presents us with a perfect Trifecta in the way of three models, three engines and three transmissions to choose from, each with their own attributes.
The models are the Soul Base, Soul Plus and Soul Exclaim. The Soul Base is powered by a 1.6 liter I-4 DOHC Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine pumping out 130 HP/118 lb.-ft. torque. The engine is coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission. Fuel economy is rated at 24/30/27 MPG, city/highway/combined.
Next in line is the Soul Plus with 2.0 liter I-4 DOHC Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine rated at 161HP/150 lb.-ft. torque. The engine is coupled with a 6-speed Automatic Transmission with Overdrive. The MPG are virtually the same as the base model with the city @ 25 rather than 24.
Wrapping up the model choices is the, as we call it, FUN Soul Exclaim model. The FUN part starts with the 1.6 liter Turbo (twin scroll) Gasoline Direct Injection (GDI) engine with 201 HP/195 lb.-ft. torque. Coupled with the engine is an (automatic) 7-speed Dual Clutch Transmission (DCT). Miles per Gallon is rated at 26/31/28 (City/highway/combined). Of interest is the fact that the additional 40 HP does not hamper MPG, each category is enhanced by an additional MPG.
Our test drive was loaded with accolades. Among them was the great visibility in the cabin including ample headroom for the driver and passengers. The 'D' shaped headed steering wheel made ingress and egress easy for the driver. Seating all around is quite comfortable and there is ample room for the rear passengers with heated out board seats. There is 24.2 feet of cargo space and a whooping 61.3 cubic feet for storage with the rear seat folded.
The instrument panel was well laid out housing the UVO Infotainment, Navigation, Bluetooth and Sound Systems. The 8" touch screen was user friendly and easy to use. The UVO system included Android and Apple CarPlay. The Harman Kardon premium audio system with eight speakers was outstanding.
Around town driving and parking was done with ease based on the size of our Soul and the helpful rear view camera display. Earlier mentioned was the FUN aspect of the new 201 HP engine, acceleration with the WOW! factor available in town when necessary and specifically coming into play as we entered the 70 MPH Interstate, reaching that speed in seconds. One our country road segment, the Soul handled surprisingly well on turns considering it high profile box design. Curves showed no body roll, steering was precise and seating was comfortable. Quite a package!
Our road trip registered 189 miles with an excellent return of 31.9 MPG of fuel.
Safety is always an important aspect of our review as we note the standard array of air bags. In addition, our Soul has the optional full length side curtain air bags. Blind Spot Detection and Rear Cross Traffic Alert System added to the safe feelings when driving the Soul.
The base price of the Soul Exclaim was $22,880 that included 18" alloy wheels. Options included a panoramic sunroof and technology package, and freight brought the final price to $27,620.
We have become a new fan of Kia's Soul vehicle line. These are smart looking vehicles with a FUN drivetrain well worth a trip to your local Kia dealer for a test drive - you won't be disappointed.

2017 VOLKSWAGEN GOLF GTI SPORT-A Performance Minded Drive
by Bob Kroupa
by Bob Kroupa
Appearing for our test drive was a 7th generation GTI Sport. This Tornado Red, four door hatchback from the VW stable was a real looker. At a glance the GTI was the right color set off by the Red brake calipers and standard V/8" "Nogara" aluminum alloy wheels.
The front of the GTI Sport showed off its all new steeply sloped hood, smaller upper grill with the centered VW badge and lower front fascia mesh patterned grill with a unique series of horizontal strokes on both sides. This all added to the WOW! factor of the new front appearance with its new Sport trim.
The clean look of the rear profile with its centered VW badge/latch, dual chrome exhaust tips on the side of a unique rear diffuser and a roof mounted spoiler combine to add class to the Sport appearance all the way around.
Inside the WOW! factor continues with comfortable heated front sport seats with oversized bolsters decked out in a striking Clark Plaid fabric. Tucked under the driver's seat is a convenient storage compartment. Add the sporty alloy trimmed pedals, unique shifter, leather wrapped flat bottomed sport steering wheel with paddle shifters, cruise control and media controls - you are now seated and about to experience one of VW's top selling vehicles!
There is more inside the cabin that achieves the comfort and entertainment of the driver and passengers. The push button START control next to the shifter on the center console is supplemented with keyless entry. At a glance we noted the center stack was angled towards the driver providing improved visibility of the touch screen infotainment system. Included is AUX-in, SD card slot, USB multimedia interface with Apple iPhone and iPod devises, Bluetooth technology, and Sirius XM, and AM/FM HD radio with 8 speaker sound system.
The instrument cluster is perfectly centered above the center spokes on the steering wheel. The left oval includes the tachometer and heat gauge. The right oval includes this analog speedometer and gas gauge. Between the two is a display with a large digital speedometer (one of our favorites, I might add) and other information including time, temperature and mileage. Another feature to our liking was the A/C-heat vents that included an adjustable shut-off knob. Notable was the driver-necessary rear backup camera that provided a crystal clear display with 'back up lines'. Excellent!
The rear seat had a folding 60/40 split configuration with ample room for the rear passengers. With the rear seats folded the Sport has 52.7 cu. ft. of cargo capacity that can accommodate a full sized bicycle.
Now for the fun part of our evaluation. Our Sport was powered by a turbocharged 2.0 liter engine with direct injection pumping out 220 HP. It was coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission. In addition, the Sport has a Driving Mode Selection feature with Normal, Sport and Custom settings. Normal and Sport have a different steering and throttle response while the Custom setting allows for individual setting selections.
Out behind-the-wheel experience was great with excellent performance 'off the line' with no turbo lag, quick shifting with 0-60 MPH in under 6 seconds. On the mountain leg of our drive, the Sport suspension was at its best keeping the GTI steady with no body roll on the numerous road curves. We logged 217 miles on our test drive and all in all, the GTI begs to be driven!
Our MPG was reported at 31.7, manufacturers specs are 24/32/27 for city/highway/combined.
Safety features included the standard array of six air bags as well as other electronic and mechanical safety systems including Electronic Stability Control (ESC)l Also included is VW's Automatic Post Collision Braking System and their Intelligent Crash Response that shuts off the fuel pump, unlocks doors and switches on the hazard lights in certain situations.
Our test vehicle was priced at $29,915 including destination charges.
BOTTOM LINE: The VW GTI Sport is a practical and fun vehicle to drive, definitely worthy of a dealer visit.

'17 Nissan Sentra Nismo - Performance Tuner
by Bob Kroupa
by Bob Kroupa
Nissan needs no introduction as they are one of the major vehicle manufacturing companies in the US. From a sales perspective in 2016, there were 1,564,423 units sold in the US. Within these total sales results was their Sentra model with 214,709 units sold. Our test drive was a 2017 Sentra, however, it was Nissan's first compact sedan to carry the Nismo nameplate.
The Nismo name was devised in 1984 from the Nissan Motorsports International LTD, their in-house turning, motorsports and performance division. We are now seeing the first of an expansion of Nismo into other models in the Nissan portfolio.
Nismo takes a unique approach to their exterior appearance with a bold signature Red Stripe on the lower front fascia, side rocker panels, below the rear bumper and on the Black side view mirrors. The exterior is complete with a striking Black mesh grill, a stream of front LED running lights and a rear spoiler. Black alloy 18" wheels with low profile tires add to the side view profile. Nismo's badge, front and rear, is the finishing touch on this new look.
Cabin highlights include heated cloth bucket seats and additional bolsters that provide a comfortable and secure ride. Touches of Red stitching and the Nismo logo on the seats are complimented with the Red trim on the sides of the shift console with more Red stitching on the steering wheel and the Nismo logo on the floor mats. Make no mistake - this test vehicle was a Nismo Edition!
The instrument panel is simple and provides ease of operation. All the expected features with the likes of the infotainment system with Bluetooth, UBS ports and Nismo's optional Premium Package were included. The Premium Package featured NissanConnect SM with Navigation and Mobile Apps, a 5.8" touch screen color display and a Bose audio system with eight speakers. The Bass was outstanding for our Sirius music listening pleasure. Convenience features in the Nismo started with the dash mounted trunk and gas fill release button and continued to the large deep glove box.
The 60/40 split rear seat provided ample room for three adults with a fold down feature to the large trunk area rated at 15.1 cubic ft.
Our Nismo was powered by their standard I-4 liter Direct Injection Turbo Engine pumping out 188 HP. It was coupled with the Continuously Variable Automatic Transmission with manual mode.
The test drive provided ample road conditions on city, interstate and country roads. City driving was a breeze with no shifting required in heavy traffic. Parking was aided with the rear camera's helpful guide lines. I was impressed with the straight line acceleration entering the 70 MPH interstate with no turbo lag. We noted this same acceleration when passing a slower moving vehicle.
On the country roads, including a short span of mountain driving, the Nismo handled the sharp turns with a minimum of body sway. Steering was responsive. The Nismo tuned suspension worked quite well when required. Acceleration has been reported at 7+ seconds in the 0-60 MPH test runs. I found this speed indication to be quite adequate for my driving requirements. A little more 'roar' from the exhaust would have been more to my liking.
Our test drive of 185 miles provided us with 31.2 MPG. Manufacturer specs indicated 25/30/27 (city/highway/combined) MPG.
Safety continues to be important is assessing the purchase opportunity of any vehicle. The Nismo had the usual array of airbags for front and rear seat passengers. For future Nismo introductions I hope to see the inclusion of blind spot detection and lane departure warnings as these safety features are essential tools and available in many Nissan vehicles today.
The Nissan Nismo base price is $24,990. Our test drive Nismo included the options package and was priced at $27,075.
BOTTOM LINE: For a firsthand look/drive of the latest Nissan Nismo model, visit you local Nissan Dealer soon.
“Scion drives Toyota youth market”
By Jim Jackson
Parents shifting to personal transportation for their driving age students have new vehicle options for their school commute this year. Toyota’s Scion division introduces two freshmen to the youth-oriented brand with the 2016 Scion iA four-door sedan and 2016 Scion iM 5-door hatchback.
Available now, Scion iA and Scion iM enter the subcompact front-wheel drive car market sold with a no-hassle, no-haggle manufacturer’s suggested Pure Price starting at $15,700 and $18,460 respectively with standard 6-speed manual transmission.
Scion iA geared by a 6-speed automatic transmission ups the ante to $16,800 while the iM equipped with a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) runs $19,200. Add $795 across the model line for freight. Uniquely different, each Scion dealer sets their own product line Pure Price.
The 2,385 pound Scion iA is powered by a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine that generates a underwhelming 106 horsepower. But high mileage becomes the benefactor as iA’s power-to-weight ratio delivers 31 miles per gallon in town and 41 mpg on the open road. Fuel economy increases to 33/city and 42/highway with an automatic transmission.
Scion’s versatile 5-door iM hatchback musters 137 hp from a 1.8L 4-cylinder for 27 mpg/city and 36 mpg/hwy with manual gearbox. Mileage figures mutually raise one mpg with a CVT.
Both Scion newcomers showcase bold design, European inspired handling and comfortable premium-appointed interior space to transport a driver and three adult passengers. The rear bench also buckles a trio of teens for a cross-town trip to the school house door. When unoccupied, the duo’s 60/40 split-fold second row provides oodles of carrying capacity for weekend gear through iA’s traditional trunk. Cargo capacity nearly doubles with the rear seat lowered flat in the iM hatchback. Upfront, each model surrounds the driver and forward passenger with a cockpit setting that features excellent dial and switchgear ergonomics.
Scion iA is made in Mexico sharing a partnership with Japanese automaker Mazda for a platform and size cloned from the Mazda 2 sedan.
A large black-out trapezoid grille with chrome surround highlights iA’s signature front end.
The Japanese made Scion iM takes on a sinister look with a mandible-style front valance.
Scion iA and iM share such standard features as dual zone automatic climate control, rear-view backup camera, LED daytime running lights, remote keyless entry and Bluetooth hands-free phone with streaming audio.
A Pioneer audio system with 7-inch touch screen, tilt/telescopic steering column, low-speed pre-collision system and eight airbags are also included.

2015 Subaru WRX STI
By Jim Jackson
Subaru pulls back the curtain to reveal their next-generation 2015 Subaru WRX STI. Based off the Japanese automaker’s tried and true WRX sedan, the 2015 WRX STI brings a new level of performance to the street honed from the World Rally racing circuits.
For 2015, STI gets a makeover – retooled and redesigned from the functional air-gulping hood scoop to its massive rear wing with only the back deck lid and window architecture borrowed from its WRX brethren.
Subaru WRX STI also retains the 305 horsepower 2.5-liter turbocharged ‘boxer’ flat four-cylinder engine from the outgoing model. All-wheel drive is standard as is a six-speed manual only transmission. The 2015 Subaru WRX STI is the closest a buyer can get to a factory-built race car in today’s market fueled by more white-collar professionals buying the STI for their daily driver, and at the same time are enjoying it for local weekend club racing.
I tested the 2015 Subaru WRX STI on twisty mountain roads en route to the famed Laguna Seca Raceway near Monterey, California. The 2015 STI’s steering ratio is remarkably quick and irons out S-curves with weighted control that requires less steering wheel input while Subaru’s Active Torque Vectoring all-wheel drive provides Velcro-like grip on pavement.
Under track conditions, STI’s multi-mode Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD is adjusted with center console switchgear that allows me to customize the all-wheel grip up to a balanced 50:50 split-ratio for more spirited driving.
STI’s turbo power comes on strong with 290 lb-ft of torque felt at 3400 RPM’s for straight-away speed that quickly reaches triple digits.
The DCCD works seamlessly with the anti-lock Brembo brakes to provide exceptional cornering performance and to safely rein the car’s forward momentum. Torsional rigidity is 40-percent stiffer and teams with the beefed-up suspension for a near flat body posture in turns.
The five occupant cabin is performance driven with a flat-bottom D-shaped steering wheel that fronts an at-a-glance gauge cluster for easy recognition of gear selection and other critical driver information. Alcantara lined front bucket seats are well bolstered to fit today’s American-framed driver and passenger comfortably. Back seat riders enjoy legroom that is increased by nearly two inches. The only rub is the ride quality that suffers from a stiff suspension. Road noise also bleeds into the cabin while at cruising speed. Under power, all is masked by STI’s throaty exhaust.
With a prudent throttle fuel economy of 17 miles per gallon/city and 23 mpg/highway can be expected.
Price for the 2015 Subaru WRX STI starts at $35,290 with freight. An exhilarating driving experience is a no cost option.

2015 Volkswagen Golf
By Jim Jackson
Birth of an automotive icon is measured in generations driven by the test of time. Debut of the front-wheel front-engine Volkswagen Golf hatchback in 1974 was the target replacement for the German auto giant’s aging air-cooled rear engine Volkswagen Beetle. Though intended to be VW’s “people’s car”, the compact Golf took on a new persona with the addition of a sport model called GTI.
Performance enthusiasts dubbing the spirited Golf GTI a “hot hatch” giving rise to a new genre in the automotive arena. After 40 years, Volkswagen Golf remains the benchmark in the hot hatch segment and the automaker’s best selling model with more than 30 million units built worldwide. Today, the 2015 VW Golf enters its seventh generation of production with a larger footprint for better handling and more interior space.
For 2015, the 2.5L five-cylinder engine in the base Golf TSI is replaced by a fuel-efficient turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder with 170 horsepower that yields 23 miles per gallon/city and 30 mpg/highway with 6-speed automatic transmission. A six-speed manual gearbox raises Golf’s fuel economy to 26/37 respectively.
Golf’s mileage leader comes with the 2.0L turbodiesel-powered TDI that provides 150 hp for 31 mpg around town and 42 mpg on the open road.
The 2015 Golf GTI becomes the benefactor of a revised 2.0L turbocharged engine for 210 hp. to garner 21/31 mpg with an automatic and 25/34 mpg with manual transmission.
Inside, Golf swings a passenger compartment that transports five occupants. Back seat space comfortably accommodates a pair of adults or a trio of child seats with 16.5 cubic-feet of cargo space remaining behind the second row. When unoccupied, Golf’s 60/40 split-rear seat folds into the cabin to expand its carrying capacity to an abundant 52.7 cu-ft. Interior features include Bluetooth connectivity, satellite radio and a 5.8-inch touch screen. Albeit functional, the screen is slightly undersized for at-a-glance use. Gauges and switch gear are otherwise user-friendly for easy operation. GTI features a racy flat bottom steering wheel with attached paddle shifters for driver-directed gear operation. Sport seats, aluminum-style pedals and GTI specific instruments also are included.
On road, Golf’s steering is crisp at any speed. Ride quality is sporty yet without punishment courtesy of an absorbent suspension that soaks up bumps and road imperfections. Brakes are well matched to Golf’s size and rein effectively across the Golf and GTI power spectrum.
The 2015 Volkswagen Golf Launch Edition is priced from $18,815 with freight, followed by the volume-leading Golf TSI for $19,815 and diesel-driven Golf TDI at $22,815. Volkswagen’s performance-based 2015 Golf GTI ups the ante to $25,215.
