2024 Mazda CX-90 PHEV Premium Plus
By Larry Rust
The Mazda CX-90 was the second plug-in hybrid I was able to drive in just a couple of weeks. This Artisan Red Premium, three-row SUV, received a lot of attention from onlookers. Its 21-inch alloy wheels added to its an eye-catching appearance.
This 2024 CX-90 plug-in hybrid is a first for Mazda in the three-row mid-size SUV segment. The PHEV is offered in three trim levels: Preferred, Premium and Premium Plus. For those who prefer an all gas CX-90, there are multiple trim levels available, all with a standard 3.3L turbo in-line 6. The PHEV is not under powered; it has a total of 323 hp due to its combined 2.5L engine and 68KW motor. The Premium Plus trim level includes Mazda’s I-Activ AWD. The acceleration is great; the handling is solid and the ride is firm.
If you are looking to tow with the CX-90, the PHEV has a rating of only 3,500 lb towing capacity compared to the gas version rated at 5,000 lb.. The estimated range for this plug-in is 25 miles on battery only with an estimated miles/gallon of 25 miles on gas.
The Premium Plus is loaded with driver and passenger conveniences. The interior is trimmed out in Napa Leather. Features include power front seats with driver’s seat memory, heated and ventilated front seats, heated leather steering wheel, heated power mirrors, keyless entry, three-zone automatic climate control, panoramic moon roof and a hands-free power rear liftgate.
The dash is trimmed out with a 12.3” digital instrument panel as well as a 12.3” color center info display. The center display is not a touchscreen but controlled by a control knob mounted on, the center console. After a little practice, I was able to figure out the process to navigate through all the functions, audio, navigation, and vehicle settings. The audio is a Bose System with 12 speakers mounted throughout the interior. Wireless connectivity covers Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and cell phone charging.
Safety features are many with blind spot monitoring, front and rear parking sensors, front cross traffic alert with braking, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, radar cruise control and rear cross traffic alert. The front center digital display also shows a 360-degree view monitor when activated. Air bags are available in the front, along with knee bags as well as curtain and side air bags.
One thing I noticed is that the second doors actually open almost a full 90 degrees to the body. I can see that this might provide easier access but watch out for those tight parking spaces.
The total MSRP for this vehicle is $58,920.
I found the CX-90 fun to drive, great looking, and worth considering if a plug-in hybrid SUV, with three-row seating, is on your list.
2023 Toyota Rav4 Prime XSE Premium
By Larry Rust
By Larry Rust
It was exciting to learn that I was receiving a 2023 Toyota Rav4 to test drive. The news was even better when I learned that it would be a plug-in hybrid. I had not been in a Rav4 since the first generation came out in the late 1990’s. Although I was not able to drive that first-generation vehicle, I did find that riding in the back seat was not very comfortable. This fifth generation, with plug-in hybrid, was introduced in 2019. I knew that, by now, the fifth generation Rav4 must be considerably better in many ways and it did not disappoint.
The Rav4 came in a two-tone paint scheme: Midnight Black metallic on the roof and Silver Sky metallic on the lower body. Black accents were on the rocker panels, wheel openings, rear bumper as well as the front grill. Nice looking 19-in. black painted alloy, five-spoke wheels finished off an attractive impression. I received quite a few favorable comments as to its sporty appearance. Roof rack crossbars are offered as an accessory feature and not standard to the Prime XSE.
This plug-in hybrid is powered by a 2.5-liter engine with 168 lb.-ft. of torque at 2800 rpm. It has a total power output of 302 hp or 225 KW. Its two electric motors provide an estimated electrical range of 42 miles on a full charge. Toyota claims that it has an acceleration from 0-60 mph in 5.8 seconds. I found the acceleration to be quick and transmission shifts effortless. The ride is somewhat stiff yet maneuverable. AWD is standard on the Rav4 Prime.
The interior is Toyota’s black SofTex detailed with red stitching which carries over on the dash, doors and console. Front seats are comfortable and accommodating. Both front seats are heated and ventilated, featuring 8-way power for the driver with 4-way power for the passenger. The steering wheel is heated, although I noticed that it does not heat all the way around. The dash has a 12.3-inch digital color display. The Info panel is a 10.5-inch color touchscreen, which I found easy to manipulate. Navigation, radio controls, general settings, and connectivity were easily set-up through this screen. A nice addition to the interior is a power tilt/slide moonroof. Second row seating and leg room have definitely changed since the first generation. I found the ride to be roomier and more comfortable.
The audio system sounded great due to the 11-speaker JBL system that includes a subwoofer and amplifier mounted in the back cargo area. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard.
The Rav4 Prime is loaded with safety features including eight air bags, a camera system, front and rear parking assist, as well as blind spot monitoring to name a few. The manufacturer identifies this safety category as Toyota’s Safety Sense 2.5.
Cargo capability for this vehicle is adequate. Lowering the second row of seating provides about 69.8 cu. ft. of cargo space; with the second seat up there are 33.5 cu. ft.
The Rav4 Prime XSE is loaded with technology, safety features, comfort conveniences, a sporty look, and is fun to drive. I do not have the exact MSRP for this vehicle but I believe it is in the neighborhood of $53,000. That may seem pricey for a plug-In hybrid compact SUV but it lacks nothing.
A footnote to this review is that after giving a test ride to a relative, several weeks later he went out and bought a RAV4!
2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Limited AWD
By Larry Rust
2023 is the second year for the EV Ioniq 5. It was first introduced in late 2021 as a 2022 model. The vehicle tested was the Limited with AWD. The Ioniq 5 is available in four trim levels: SE Standard, SE, SEL and Limited. AWD, however, is not available with the SE Standard package.
Features of the exterior include the styling in body panels, front end, wheels, and rear deck. In the front, at the bottom of the bumper, are two of what Hyundai calls active grill shutters. These open when more cooling is required. There are angled side panels, a unique front end and 20-in. alloy wheels which have a distinctive design. The wheels give it that special look for an EV. The color of the exterior is Cyber Grey which makes the car stand out. The Ioniq 5 is available in six other colors. The front has LED projector headlights, LED daytime running lights and rear LED taillights. The roof has a panoramic roof glass sunroof with a power operated sunshade. Altogether, the features create an attractive appearance.
My first impression on the test drive was, "This vehicle is solid!" Great acceleration, no cabin noises, very limited road noise, and exceptional handling made for very enjoyable test drives.
The powertrain for this vehicle is dual electric motors with Hyundai's HTRAC control; one for the front and one for the rear. The front motor is 74 kw while the rear motor is 165 kw for a combined horsepower of 320. The battery is lithium ion with a capacity of 77.4 kwh and 697 volts. The charging rate is about 8.5 hours at 240V. Rapid charging at 800 kw (800V) can bring the battery from 10% to 80% in about 18 minutes. The vehicle has an approximate range of 266 miles. The charging technology also includes an ultra fast charging capability. There is a battery preheating system as well as a heat pump which increases battery life and reduces the amount of battery energy needed to heat the car.
The interior is somewhat conventional in appearance. The test vehicle had a black on black motif. A grey two-tone is the other interior option. Seats are comfortable and accommodating. Rear seating provides ample legroom. The dash has dual 12.3 in. screens - one for a digital instrument display and the other for information such as audio, navigation and system operations.
This vehicle is loaded with technology! For safety and convenience there is forward collision avoidance, blind spot avoidance, lane keeping and following assist, rear cross traffic collision avoidance, parking collision avoidance, and parking distance warning in both forward and reverse.
Convenience technology includes proximity and push button start, door handles which pivot open on the unlock command, a hands-free Smart liftgate, a premium head-up display, both surround and rear view monitoring, heated and power folding side mirrors, Smart cruise control, and rear window sun shades. Hyundai H-Tex trimmed seats, memory 8-way power driver seat with relaxation function, 8-way power front passenger seat, front seats - both heated and ventilated - are also standard technology. A leather wrapped, heated steering wheel, tilt and telescopic wheel, rain sensing front wipers, dual auto temperature control, wireless phone charging, front and rear USB ports and ambient interior lighting round out the technological features. Wow!
The sound system is a Bose Premium System with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.
Hyundai offers its comprehensive warranty on the Ioniq 5 which includes a 5-year 50,000 mile new vehicle, 10-year 100,000 mile powertrain, 10-year 100,000 electric vehicle system, 3-year complimentary maintenance, and 5-year unlimited miles roadside assistance.
The MSRP base is $56,500 and with an added option of carpeted floor mats ($210) and delivery at $1,295, the MSRP jumps to $58,005. I feel that this is the nicest EV I have driven in its class!

2023 Toyota Corolla Hybrid XLE
|
Introduced in 1966, the Corolla quickly became a best-selling model for Toyota and has gone through twelve generational changes since then. The Hybrid Corolla was introduced in 2020. Recently, I had the opportunity to test drive the 2023 Corolla Hybrid sedan in the XLE trim level. My initial impressions of the exterior are that the front end looks sporty with a horizontal slat grill and redesigned headlights while the rear end is more conventional in its design. The exterior color of the vehicle driven, Dark Grey, is one of eight available color choices and gives it a sleek appearance. The front headlights are automatic LED lights. As a safety measure there are LED running lights. The nice looking wheels are 16" alloy, 10 spoke wheels. A power tilt/slide moonroof comes standard. The interior is appealing with the white seats and trim, black carpeting and black and white accents on the doors as well as the dash. Toyota is calling this option "Parchment" according to the window sticker (Monroney) or "Mocha" on Toyota's website. Given the choice, I would select the only other interior option, Black, rather than the one on the test vehicle which would definitely require constant cleaning. The dash has a nice 8-inch info screen and behind the wheel is a 7-inch gauge cluster. The gauge cluster display is customizable. The steering wheel has controls for hands free phone, audio, and cruise control. The steering wheel is leather wrapped; however, I found it to feel slippery initially on a very cold day. The ignition uses Toyota's Smart Key System with a push button start. The audio has an $675.00 upgrade option which includes JBL Premium Audio, 9 speakers with a subwoofer, amplifier and wireless charger. The system is Android Auto and Apple Carplay capable. The front and rear seats are appointed with Toyota's Sof-Tex material. The front seats are heated and the driver's seat is power adjustable. The front seats are very comfortable with adequate leg room; less leg room in the second row may be problematic for larger passengers. The Hybrid System uses a 1.8 L, 4-Cylinder, dual variable valve timing engine coupled with an electric continuously variable transmission. The engine puts out 138 horsepower with 105 lb.- ft. of torque and FWD. Fuel economy is rated at 53 MPG city and 46 MPG highway, for a combined rating of 50 MPG. I found this sedan to have plenty of acceleration. There are three driving modes to select: normal, eco and sport. I found the ride to be satisfactory, for a compact, in all three driving modes. There did seem to be more road noise than I expected on my test drives. The Corolla is loaded with safety and conveniences: Toyota's Safety Sense 3.0., which has a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, full speed range dynamic cruise control, lane departure alert with steering wheel assist, lane tracing assist automatic high beams, road sign assist and proactive driving assist. A back-up camera, blind spot monitor, and rear cross traffic alert added to safety features offered in this model. The base MSRP for this Hybrid Corolla is $26,600. Added options like audio upgrade, mudguards, door sill protectors, carpet mats, rear bumper protector, frameless Homelink mirror bring the total to $29,231 upon delivery. So for under $30K, you can get a nice well equipped Toyota Corolla Hybrid. Check it out! |
2022 Toyota Tundra Capstone CrewMax 4X4
By Larry Rust
I recently had the opportunity to spend some driving time in the new 2022 Tundra Capstone. This model is new for 2022 and puts it up with the competitors in the luxury pickup market.
The truck has an impressive look with its Twin Turbocharged I Force Max, 3.5L V6 Hybrid power train. The hybrid setup produces 427 horsepower and 583 ft.-lb. of torque, giving it a towing capacity of about 10,340 lbs. with a 1,485 max payload in the 5.5' bed. Transmission is an automatic 10-speed with drive mode select. Fuel economy is listed as 19 mpg city and 22 mpg highway.
In terms of the exterior, the Capstone can be ordered in six colors. The test vehicle color was Wind Chill Pearl ($435 option). The 22" chrome wheels are standard. Special Capstone badging is on each front door as well as special "I Force Max" badging on the hood. The rear tailgate can be dropped from a button on the key fob but has to be returned to the upright position manually. Also, a step in the left rear corner extends for easy bed access when the tailgate is lowered. The bed is reinforced aluminum composite. Additional conveniences are power running boards and power side mirrors.
The interior is impressive with two-toned black and white leather with wood accents. Having white on the front armrest and seat backs is questionable for any truck, whether for work or play, as constant cleaning will be necessary. However, this is the only interior combination currently available. Hopefully, Toyota will add more interior color options on future models. Front seats are 10-way powered with a four way lumbar adjustment. Front and back seats are heated and ventilated. An added convenience is the power retractable cab rear window.
The cabin has a standard slide/tilt panoramic roof and ample room in the rear seat for three more passengers. The dash has a 14" info-tainment screen and a 12.3" digital display behind the wheel. The heads-up display is a welcome safety feature for the driver. I found it easy to navigate through the controls on the steering wheel and below the info screen. The 12-speaker JBL Premium audio system, including subwoofer and amplifier, makes for a great sound. The system has Wireless Apple Carplay and Android Auto.
For safety equipment, the Capstone edition comes with Toyota's Safety System 2.5 which includes a pre-collision warning with pedestrian detection, full speed range dynamic speed radar speed control, lane departure alert with steering assist, automatic high beams, and blind spot monitoring. The trailer backup guide system, with straight path control, provides a necessary safety feature on the vehicle.
Overall, this truck is fun to drive. There is notable engine/exhaust noise throughout the various drive modes. The ride is comfortable for a pickup. A $1045.00 option adds a load leveling air suspension which includes an adaptive variable system.
The MSRP for this luxury pickup, with options and delivery, is $76,760. If you are considering a well optioned truck, take look at the Tundra Capstone.
2022 Hyundai Tucson Limited Hybrid AWD
By Larry Rust
I was pleasantly surprised when given the opportunity to drive a new vehicle just released to the American market of SUV's. The Hyundai Tucson is in its fourth generation of the vehicle, and third generation of the platform, after originally being introduced in 2004. The Tucson continues to be a popular seller just below its big brother, the Santa Fe. Hyundai SUV's continue to be a major portion of their vehicle sales.
The exterior has been redesigned from a new front end to sculptured sides and distinctive rear taillights. LED headlights are integrated into the front grill and, when illuminated, give off an impressive look. The rear wheel side panels mimic the front wheel panels and give an interesting look of triangular shapes. At the rear, LED taillights give the Tucson a new look by stretching across the back deck and are accented by twin angular images. The rear wiper is now hidden in the upper rear window spoiler. The Limited sports 19-in. alloy wheels.
The interior gave me the feeling of being in a cockpit with the passenger side mimicking the impression. Hyundai has obviously given careful thought to the redesign of the interior. I liked the clean, flat look on top of the dash, with no protrusions sticking up as if they were add-ons. A narrow band of trim wraps around the compartment which houses the ventilation for each front passenger and venting is done from below on both sides of the center console. My test drive passenger commented many times about the design and the even distribution of ventilation. The leather trimmed front seats are comfortable, both heated and ventilated for passenger comfort. The center stack touch controls, located below the 10.25-in. information screen, are easily identifiable. Also standard is a full panoramic sunroof.
The Tucson is powered by a 1.6L turbocharged GDI 4-cylinder hybrid engine which generates 180 hp and 195 lb-ft. of torque. With the added horsepower of the electric motor at 59 hp, the total becomes 226 hp and 258 lb-ft. of torque. The hybrid system is coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters at the steering wheel. The Limited edition comes with HTRAC AWD as standard with mode select. The combined fuel economy rating is 37 MPG.
Base features include LED headlights, running lights and taillights. Other standard features include powered memory driver's seat with lumbar support, powered passenger seat, heated tilt and telescoping steering wheel with audio, cruise and phone controls, heated side mirrors with built in turn signal indicators, dual automatic temperature control and rain sensing wipers.
One interesting feature that I did not have a chance to check out was Hyundai's Smart Park system which is standard on the Limited. The system gives the driver the ability to remotely park the car in a narrow parking space and retrieve it, using the key fob. I would worry about adjacent vehicles and what those individuals may do when opening doors in such a confined space.
The sound system is a Bose Premium system, with Android Auto and Apple Carplay. There are dual front and rear USB outlets and two 12V DC power outlets.
The Tucson Limited comes with a host of Hyundai safety technology: forward collision avoidance assist, lane keeping and lane following assist, and driver attention warning. Additionally, a blind spot collision alert on the dash gives the driver a video display - showing either the left or right side of the vehicle. This is a feature I really liked. Other features include rear cross traffic alert, rear seat occupant alert, surround view and blind view monitoring on the navigation display. Air bags are located front and front side, with side curtain air bags.
The warranty is one of the best available from a manufacturer with 6 year/60,000 mile on the vehicle and a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty on powertrain, hybrid system components, and hybrid battery.
This vehicle, as tested, had an MSRP of $37,519 with delivery charges of $1,185.00 for a total of $38,704.00.
I would definitely recommend a look at the 2022 Tucson Hybrid Limited if you are going the hybrid route. The impressive redesign, convenience features and safety features, along with a great warranty, should put it at the top of the list.

2021 Toyota Highlander Hybrid AWD
By Larry Rust
This would be my first opportunity to spend some significant time in a hybrid, especially a Toyota Highlander. The Highlander was redesigned in 2020 and updates were made to the 2021 model such as safety technology, called Toyota Safety Sense 2.5+, and standard LED headlights. The Highlander comes in four trim levels: LE, XLE, Limited and Platinum. My test drive was in the Limited version.
I found this SUV to be quiet, sporty looking, comfortable and nice to drive. The vehicle handled well in the snowy conditions of my test drive. The interior was rich looking with comfortable front seats and many convenience features that made the vehicle a pleasure to drive. Toyota did a nice job on designing this interior. The Highlander Hybrid is geared for a family looking for better fuel economy in a three row SUV. While there is plenty of leg room in the first and second row of seating, the third row is limiting for adults.
The Hybrid model is not a plug-in hybrid; rather, it is powered by a 2.5 Liter, four cylinder engine which is coupled to two electric motors giving a combined net HP of 243. There is a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) that transmits the power to the front wheels. The AWD model uses another electric motor to supply power for the rear wheels and is an electronic on-demand system. It transitions easily between the gas and electric power modes depending on the driving conditions. The combined fuel economy rating for this vehicle is 35 mpg.
The Safety Sense 2.5+ offers a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, dynamic radar speed control which helps you maintain a set distance from the vehicle in front of you, lane departure alert, and lane tracing assist which keeps you centered in the lane when used in conjunction with the dynamic radar speed control. Other features of the system are automatic high beam control to dim your lights with on-coming traffic and road sign assist which displays road signs (speed limit, stop, do not enter, yield) on the instrument panel. Additional safety features include blind spot monitoring with rear cross traffic alert as well as front and rear parking assist with auto braking.
The interior features a premium sound system with 11 JBL speakers (including a subwoofer and amplifier), hands-free Bluetooth, with Apple Carplay and Android Auto compatibility. There are four USB ports and one USB media port conveniently located in the vehicle.
Other standard interior features are leather trimmed seats, driver's seat with memory settings, heated and ventilated power front seats, tilt-slide power moonroof with sun shade, and a third row 60/40 fold flat seat. The steering wheel is heated, but I did not like that it was only heated on the sides of the wheel. Added as an $1050.00 option are second row 60/40 bench seats replacing the captains' chairs, an enlarged touch screen (12.3-in. rather than 8-in.), and a bird's eye view camera with perimeter scan and curb view. The curb view is a nice feature for navigating drive thru lanes to avoid scraping the wheels or tires when making those tight turns.
With only a couple of additional options, like running boards, illuminated door sills, door edge guards, and special paint, the MSRP of this hybrid with delivery is $50,788.
If you are looking for a well-designed, driver friendly, three row SUV, and the added cost of a hybrid is not a deterrent, by all means check out the Toyota Highlander. I don't think you will be disappointed.

2019 LEXUS ES 300h ULTRA LUX
by Bob Kroupa
The mere word "Lexus' sounds a special note, so much to our delight we were told a luxury vehicle would soon arrive for our next test drive. This 2019 Lexus ES 300h Ultra Lux was headed our way direct from the stable of new Lexus vehicles. The 'h' designation was an indication it would be our treat to sample the latest hybrid technology from the Lexus in their most popular sedan, the ES.
Upon arrival, we were even more impressed than we had anticipated. From our first sight of the new ES front wheel drive platform we were delighted with its longer, wider and lower profile.
This luxury edition was decked out in Moonbeam Beige Metallic exterior paint and sported 18" split 5-spoke alloy noise and reduction wheels that elegantly accommodated a wider front and rear tract. While not usually a fan of the Lexus grills in the past, this one added a considerable amount of '3D' appeal with its hour-glass design and unique vertical silver bars with chrome surround enhancing the low hood line. The grill was flanked by LED headlamps with lower accent trim. Well done!
Inside the cabin, the comfortable leather seats were a real treat with a heat/cool feature, 14 adjustments and a driver's seat cushion extender. An unusual shaped dash supported the Infotainment System's 12.3" screen with navigation, Apple CarPlay, Verizon Wi-Fi hotspot, dynamic voice command, USB ports, Bluetooth and a touch pad to select navigation, audio, climate and other selection functions. Our test vehicle also included the Mark Levinson audio system with 17 speakers and a 1,900 WATT premium sound system. WOW! Better than being home.
The rear seat had ample room to accommodate three six-foot adults. Adding comfort and convenience were manual sun side shades and a power rear window shade. A Moonroof opened the world for passengers viewing pleasure. Although the rear seat was non-folding, 16.7 cubic feet of storage of luggage/cargo hauling was available in the large trunk area.
Safety features covered it all from the standard automatic emergency braking to active lane control, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control and lane departure warnings. An options package includes adaptive suspension, wireless smartphone charging, blind spot monitors and parking sensors.
A fourth generation hybrid drive system was developed by the Lexus engineering team. An all-new 2.5 liter, in-line 4-cylinder aluminum gas engine running on the Atkinson cycle is coupled with a smaller, more power dense electric motor and an all-new hybrid transaxle. The end result is a combined 215 total system HP.
A brand new nickel-metal hybrid battery powers the electric motor that has been relocated from the trunk to underneath the back seat. This was made possible by a 4.7" reduction in the height of the battery and the adaption of a more compact cooling system. In addition, it improves the front-to-rear weight distribution of the ES for better road handling.
The 215 HP is coupled to the front wheel drive by a redesigned electronic continuously variable transmission. Three drive mode selections are available: ECO, Normal and Sport.
Now that we had our visual and spec data recorded, it was time for our road test that would take us on the Interstate and country roads. Notable was our acceleration into the Interstate, a quiet, quick run-up to 80 MPH. The data from Lexus indicated the 0-60 MPH time is 8.1 seconds with top speed of 112 MPH. Please note we said, 'quiet'; the sound deadening insulation covers 93% of the floor pan while underbody covers and front fender liners further reduce road noise. The 300h was equipped with one of our favorite features, a 10.2 " color heads-up display reflecting speed, road signage and navigation directions.
Exiting onto a curving, remote country road we checked out some other features of the 300h to great success. Selecting the Sport mode further enhanced acceleration by boosting torque at lower speeds while paddle shifters (steering column mounted) were used to move through six simulated gears for more precise control. Suspension and steering enhancements smoothed our rough pavement and steering became more precise. Again, well done!
Our road trip returned outstanding miles per gallon - 43/45/44 (city/highway/combined). The base price of our Lexus ES 300h Ultra Lux was $44,960. Options and delivery brought the total of our test vehicle to $54,405.
BOTTOM LINE: If you are interested in buying or just testing an amazing luxury hybrid, a trip to your nearest Lexus dealership is a MUST!

2019 Mini Cooper SE COUNTRYMAN ALL4 PHEV
By Bob Kroupa
'LET'S MOTOR!' is the tagline for the Mini Cooper and we recently had the opportunity to drive a 2019 Thunder Gray metallic Mini Cooper Countryman ALL4 (all-wheel drive) PHEV (plug-in hybrid) in Southern FL.
From a 2019 model appearance perspective, the Mini continues its unique profile and body design that establishes its presence as a neat compact sedan. The Countryman designation clearly announces its versatility as a metropolitan or urban people carrier and/or a country hauling vehicle with its all-wheel drive and off-road capability.
Actually, I was quite surprised and impressed with the large number of Minis on the road in the greater Ft. Lauderdale metroplex. Notable for their distinctive body style and array of two-tone exterior paint colors, a mini can be identified in a glance; ahead, behind or side by side, when seen parked or in traffic.
For the 2019 model year, minor exterior changes were made that included a redesign of the headlights, new taillights and modified turn signals. In addition new 18" wheels with run-flat tires added to the curb appeal of the Mini.
The big news for the Mini Cooper line was their newly developed plug-in hybrid. Neatly identified with bold yellow 'E' badges on the upper front fenders with the driver's side accommodating the 110-240 volt plug-in cord outlet to charge the battery. The side view mirrors are also bold yellow in color. A full battery charge takes approximately three hours using a 240 volt plug-in charger; much longer with a 110 volt outlet.
The Mini is powered by a 1.5 liter TwinPower 3-cylinder engine with 134 HP and 162 lb-ft of torque driving the front wheels. An electric motor is rated at 87 HP and torque at 122, which drives the rear wheels. Fully charged the electric motor has a 12-15 mile range. The engine is coupled with a 6-speed Steptronic automatic transmission.
The interior has comfortable heated front sport seats, rear seating accommodating two adults nicely and has 17.6 cubic feet of cargo hauling space behind the split rear seats; 47.4 cubic feet with the seats folded down.
From an infotainment perspective our Mini included a 8.8" touchscreen display, Navigation, Bluetooth connectivity for telephone and audio streaming, Apple CarPlay, Harmon/Kardon premium audio system, USB ports, wireless charging pad and Rear View Camera. Other interior features included Ambient Lighting with adjustable colors and Panoramic moon roof. Also the array of retro dials and toggle switches is a neat feature.
Safety features include eight standard air bags with side curtain and front knee bags. Other safety features are forward-collision warning and automatic emergency braking. Missing was blind spot detection and lane departure.
Our 'Let's Motor' trip took us to I-95 where the Mini Cooper rapidly accelerated into the fast moving traffic, well done, I might add. The Mini is certainly a spirited driving machine. In local traffic and mall parking the Mini is just the 'right size'. The Mini has three driving modes: Electric only up to 55 MPH; The Hybrid model with electric and gas (270 mile range); and, the save-battery mode with the gasoline engine only keeping the battery at a 90% charge.
Fuel economy is rated at 65 MPGe (electric and gasoline) and 27 MPG (gasoline only). The base price of the 2019 Mini SE Countryman ALL4 PHEV is $36,900. Our 'loaded' model priced out at $45,750.
BOTTOM LINE: Something new happened! During our trip to FL we had the opportunity to chat with a personal acquaintance who just taken delivery of a new 2019 Mini Cooper SE Countryman ALL4 (PHEV). It was totally coincidental as we had just taken delivery of our very similar test vehicle.
This visit was quite timely as it provided us with an opportunity to receive a first-hand review of the Mini from an actual consumer/buyer. She really did her homework prior to her purchase and she shared her buyer requirements and her Mini Cooper findings with me as follows:
- Mini had the all-important tax credit for a Plug-in Hybrid ($4,000)
- This Hybrid can be driven in the I-95 Express Lane at no charge for her Miami daily commute
- Plug-in Hybrids had privileged parking spaces in most parking areas (shopping malls, train
stations, and other locations. WITH plug-in facilities to charge the battery
- The electric mode is economical in her short commute to the train station as a secondary
means of transportation
- The interior cabin rainbow lighting feature was very cool
- The sun roof was great, especially in FL, lots of sun time
- Mini gives the advantage of 'going green' and contributes to limiting her pollution of the
environment
-The zero emissions of the Mini in the electric mode made the Mini the right choice for her.
So, the real bottom line is: Visit your local Mini Cooper to take an 'up front' look at this special vehicle that could match your requirements for versatile space inside and out, fuel efficiency, ecological commitments and, of course, today's hot colorful style options!

2018 Lexus NX 300h Hybrid
By Jim Jackson
Today’s count reveals seven of the 21 models in the Lexus product portfolio are hybrid vehicles. Among those gaining traction in the luxury brand’s sport utility segment is the compact 2018 Lexus NX 300h crossover hybrid with standard all-wheel drive.
The NX 300h drivetrain combines a 2.5-liter four-cylinder gasoline engine with an electric motor routed through a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) for a combined output of 194 horsepower. Reaching 60 miles per hour on an interstate entrance ramp takes a relaxing nine seconds.
However, the torque boost of the electric motor is pleasing with a responsive steady pull off the line from a standing start.
Overall, the hybrid’s power is adequate for day-to-day driving with a satisfying return of 33 miles per gallon in town and 30 mpg on the highway.
The communication between the gas-electric power team is smooth and seamless. Engine noise is pronounced when ascending a grade as the CVT hangs on to low-end revs longer under demand.
Level pavement renders the luxurious quiet and occupant comfort expected of the Lexus brand. The 2018 Lexus NX 300h has adult-size room front to back. The second row is belted for three riders and ideally accommodates a trio of toddlers in booster seats. When unoccupied, the manual reclining 60/40 split-folding rear seatbacks can be laid forward to expand the 16.8 cubic feet of cargo volume behind the second row to over 53 cu-ft of carrying capacity. Interior appointments are attractive with sophisticated styling that visually connects the design contours through the cabin.
Fit and finish is excellent, accented by a buyer’s choice two-tone interior and black shadow wood trim. Upfront, an available 10.3 inch infotainment system and remote touchpad enhances the navigation duties with finger tip operation. But the new system is overly sensitive to the touch and requires short and decisive movement for pinpoint accuracy. It can be a big distraction while driving and is best manipulated while the vehicle is stationary.
The NX 300h infotainment system also falls short as it lacks compatibility with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay and could be a deal breaker with some phone dependent buyers.
Base price for the 2018 Lexus NX 300h 5-door crossover utility vehicle starts at $38,335. Add $995 for freight from Miyawaka, Fukuoka, Japan.

2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid XLE
By Jim Jackson
Toyota opens the travel season with the high-mileage 2018 Camry Hybrid. Built to master family comfort and fuel economy, Camry Hybrid features contemporary looks, five-passenger seating and over 50 miles per gallon.
New design language fronts the midsize 2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid LE, SE and XLE with avant-garde styling that meets the demand and interest of today’s younger buyer.
Camry Hybrids are motivated by a sole 2.5-liter gasoline engine assisted by an electric motor for a combined 208 horsepower mated to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). Selecting ECO, Normal or Sport mode gives the operator a varied choice for driving dynamics including an EV mode that propels the car on electric-only power for short periods of time. But as much as they appear the same, 2018 Camry Hybrid models each possess their own performance personality.
The LE model pairs smaller wheels and light weight structural components along with the use of a lithium-ion battery pack for 53-mpg on the open road and 51-mpg around town.
Camry Hybrid’s SE and XLE come with more standard content and a heavier nickel-metal-hydride battery rated at 44 mpg/city and 47 mpg/highway.
I tested the top-tier 2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid XLE featuring premium cabin appointments and up-scale amenities. Good first impressions are made with a spacious five-passenger compartment donned with attractive two-tone upholstery and generous head, knee and legroom front to back. A pair of full–size child seats or a trio of youngster booster seats easily fit in Camry Hybrid’s second row. Fit and finish is excellent throughout the cabin with soft touch surfaces that give occupants a pampered riding experience. Seat surfaces are fashionably accented with tasteful inserts and supported by hip and side bolsters that offer ‘just right’ comfort for the daily commute or summer road trips.
Camry Hybrid’s battery pack now resides under the rear seat for over 15 cubic feet of trunk space.
Rear seats can now fold forward to expand the carrying capacity into the cabin for longer loads. However, the folded seatbacks create a sizable ledge that eliminates a flat load floor.
Price spectrum for the 2018 Toyota Camry Hybrid ranges from $28,685 to $33,135 including freight.

2018 BMW 740e xDrive iPerformance
by Bob Kroupa
by Bob Kroupa
The folks from BMW recently took us 'uptown' for our analysis and test drive with the delivery of their plug-in hybrid 740e.
As one would expect from a high-end luxury vehicle, our 740e arrived decked out in Magellan Gray Metallic exterior paint and Black Dakota Leather interior representing BMW's latest approach to styling, features, hybrid drivetrain and performance - all becoming an ingredient of the WOW factor.
Our first walk-around reflected BMW's simple but traditional grill flanked by dual adaptive LED headlights and LED fog lights. The side profile included neat power folding heated side view mirrors. Run-flat tires mounted on 19 inch wheels added to the 'curb appeal' of the 740i, top of the line, luxury 4-door sedan. The rear profile is enhanced with adaptive LED brake lights and dual chrome exhaust ports.
Opening the front door we were treated to a first-class cabin with 14-way power and heated luxury front seats, Chestnut wood trim, heated leather-covered steering wheel, keyless entry and ignition as well as ambient lighting. Notable was BMW's soft-close automatic doors.
The comfortable heated rear seats have ample room for three adults with an abundance of leg room and a panoramic moon-roof for overhead viewing.
Prior to taking our test drive we reviewed the drivetrain description of this special BMW plug-in hybrid 740e xDrive iPerformance 'green car'. It is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine rated at 255 HP. Adding the rechargeable electric motor increases the total system output to 322 HP and 369 pound/feet of torque. This configuration is coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission with shift paddle options and BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive system providing the driver with all-weather capability.
The 740e includes a 120 volt power cord that can fully charge the 9.2 kWh lithium-ion battery pack in about seven hours. The onboard 3.7 W charger with a 240 volt cable will charge the battery in three hours. The battery-only driving range is from 10-14 miles.
Our test drive met all expectations starting with instrument panel controls, placement, simplicity of use and special features that included heads-up display (one of our favorites I might add) and Driving Dynamics Control with ECO PRO, ADAPTIVE, COMFORT and SPORT settings (Both with + modes). With these features on our test vehicle, we were ready for the 740e to handle Interstate, local and rural/mountain roads. The Dynamic Control made the proper adjustment based on our selection!
The BMW 740e has a top speed of 130 MPH. The 0-60 MPH time is reported at 5.1 seconds. Miles per gallon is stated as 64 MPGe in the electric plus gasoline mode and 27 MPG combined city/highway in the gasoline only mode.
From an infotainment perspective, this BMW included iDrive 6.0 system with touch screen controller, BMW navigation system with 10.2" high resolution screen, voice command, wireless charging with Wi-Fi hotspot, Sirius XM Radio, Harman Kardon surround sound, Apple CarPlay Compatibility, USB ports and Bluetooth.
All-important safety features of the 740e included the full array of airbags; Front and Side Impact, Overhead and Knee airbags. The latest safety feature additions included Lane Departure Warning, Active Blind Spot Detection, Active Cruise Control with Stop and Go, Surround View Camera, Parking Assist and Rear View Camera.
The Warranty is a 4 years/50,000 mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty and a 3 year/36,000 mile Maintenance Program.
Base Manufacturers Suggest Retail Price of our test vehicle was $90,700. With options and delivery the total Suggest Retail Price was $99,845.
BOTTOM LINE: The 2018 BMW 740e xDrive iPerformance is a very fine luxury hybrid sedan.

2017 Lexus NX 300h HYBRID CROSSOVER
By Bob Kroupa
By Bob Kroupa
When we found out a Lexus SUV would be heading our way, we immediately hoped it would be the RX model. Sadly, the answer was no, that it would be an AWD compact hybrid crossover, the NX 300h. This was going to be interesting as we have not driven a Lexus hybrid. To help us along, a Monroney was e-mailed to us with all the advance information.
You might be asking, what is a Monroney? However before we continue, the term Monroney is frequently used in the automobile industry. Most of us use the more casual term 'window sticker'. The Monroney was named after Almer Stillwell "Mike" Monroney, a US Senator from Oklahoma. Monroney sponsored the Automobile Information Act of 1958 which mandated the disclosure of equipment and pricing information on new automobiles. Today the Monroney is enhanced with fuel ratings and safety features. Well, enough of the history lesson, let's get back to our hybrid Lexus.
We soon were looking at our advance copy of the Monroney Label and all of a sudden we knew we were in for a real treat of a test drive with all of the listed features and options. The Monroney indicated it was powered by a 2.5 liter, 4-cylinder, In-line, 16-valve DOHC engine and two electric motors for a total combined HP of 194. It was coupled with an electronic continuously variable transmission (ECVT) and dynamic torque controlled all wheel drive (AWD).
We happened to be outside when the NX arrived and our immediate response was WOW! What a nice looking vehicle this is with the new Lexus signature spindle grille trimmed neatly in chrome, flanked by LED headlights and lower running lights. Add the smart looking side mirrors with integrated turn signals and the 19" forged wheels with all-season tires and it looks like the Lexus folks have sent me a real winner!
But my WOW! impressions didn't end with the exterior. Opening the cabin door we noted comfortable looking leather bucket seats with heated and ventilated controls, 10-way power for the driver including 2-way lumbar and 8-way power for the passenger. The instrument panel was well planned and incorporated a 7" infotainment permanent screen centered on top of the dash with Navigation, 10 speaker Lexus premium sound system, Sirius XM, AM/FM, Bluetooth, USB, iPod, MP3 control and HD radio. Most controls are via a touch pad on the lower center console along side of the cup-holders. We found this concept/position to be somewhat difficult for the driver to use, especially with the vehicle in motion.
However, much to our liking was one of our favorite features, the Heads Up Display, that offered a selection of information including digital MPH, turn signal displays, lane traffic, etc. Another great feature was a switch on the instrument panel to fold and raise the 60-40 split rear seats. The cargo space was 16.8 cubic feet and 53.7 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.
Other cabin highlights included the power moon roof, heated steering wheel, a 120 Volt outlet, Q1 wireless charger and steering wheel controls.
Prior to taking our road test we felt a review of the safety equipment was in order. The NX has 8 airbags including driver knee, side and curtain airbags. Also included were features such as Lexus Enform Safety Connect, Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Pre-Collision System with All-Special Cruise Control and Lane Departure Alert.
Starting with our city drive we found the NX easy to handle in traffic based on its compact size with adequate acceleration to keep up with the moving traffic. In the EV mode (Electric Only) appropriate in slow moving and bumper to bumper traffic, the NX automatically shifted to the gasoline mode at the appropriate time. Parking was a non-issue using the Intuitive Parking Assist and rearview camera.
Entering the posted 70 MPH Interstate we took some caution based on the NX's normal acceleration. It has been reported the 0-60 MPH time is rated at 8.8 seconds. Once on the Interstate we were able to cruise at the 70 MPH mark for a pleasant, comfortable ride.
Once on country roads with several sharp turns, we kept the speed to a safe level. The NX handled the challenging roads without any issue, however it was apparent that we were not driving a performance model. During our 150 mile trip we registered 30.5 MPG. The EPA/DOT specs showed 33/30/31 (City/highway/combined) MPG.
From a price perspective, the base price of our NX was $39,720. Adding the options and delivery brought the total price to $54,817.
BOTTOM LINE: This is a smart looking hybrid/crossover worthy of a trip to your local Lexus Dealer for a second look!

2017 KIA OPTIMA HYBRID EX
By Bob Kroupa
By Bob Kroupa
The test drive we made with the Kia Optima Hybrid was quite timely as there have been numerous world-wide news reports related to the future of hybrid vehicles. The reports were all positive, we might add, as is our evaluation of Kia's Optima Hybrid EX.
Kia introduced the all new fourth generation Optima sedan at the Chicago Auto Show in February 2016. Included was a new hybrid powertrain with a 2.0 liter GDI four cylinder engine rated at 154 HP and coupled with an upgraded six-speed automatic transmission. A 38 KW electric motor and clutch provides additional power to the engine when required. Total HP is rated at 193HP at 6,000 rpm.
The goal was to increase fuel economy by 10% over the outgoing model. Mission accomplished! Our test drive of over 300 miles, city and interstate driving, register 44.6 miles per gallon. Manufacturer specs reflected 39/46/42 (city/highway/combined).
Not owning a hybrid ourself, we are continually amazed by the lack of any sound from the engine when the Optima is started up with its hybrid starter generator. Placing the Optima in gear, it is ready for a 'rabbit' start and the smooth shifting six-speed transmission performs flawlessly.
During the leg of our city driving, parking was effortless with the Optima's Surround Monitoring System and Rear Parking Assist that provided four sensors located in the rear bumper to alert us with warning chimes as we approached any object/vehicle.
The interstate drive provided a quiet comfortable ride enhanced by a stiffer seat frame that reduces vibration, a greater use of soft foam in the upper back and headrest, as well as denser support foam in the thigh segment areas. In addition, driver and front passenger seats were enhanced with a heat/cool activation selection. Rear passengers have an abundance of leg room, side retractable window shades and a heated seat option.
Cargo area was rated at 13.4 cubic feet behind the 60/40 rear seats which is 'no change' from the gas powered Optima sedan due to the revised battery pack location now fitting under the trunk floor. Also a Tire Mobility Kit replaced the spare tire freeing up additional space.
With a smart look and bold and aggressive styling, the curb appeal of the hybrid resembles Optima's non-hybrid model, however, closer examination reveals minor modifications to enhance gas mileage. Included were items like an active grille shutters which automatically opens and closes based on the speed, a front air curtain, a beveled rear bumper, a rear diffuser designed to enhance airflow and a 17" aerodynamic alloy-wheel design. Also LED lighting is universal with the added touch of Dynamic Bending Light Headlights.
The cabin is neatly designed and functional. The heated steering wheel adds to the driver's comfort. Adding a first class touch is the real (not molded) stitching on the dash and doors.
Optima's Infotainment and Connectivity platform touch all of the bases with 8" Touchscreen Navigation, Harmon Kardon Premium Sound System, Android Auto + Apple CarPlay Smartphone Integration, Sirius Radio, Bluetooth and UBS Chargers + 12 volt outlet. A job well done!
From a safety perspective the usual array of advanced air bags are included as well as lower anchors and tethers for child seats. The latest active safety technology systems are included in the optional Hybrid EX Technology Package that includes Advanced Smart Cruise Control, Autonomous Emergency Braking System, Blind Sport Detection, Forward Collision Warning System, Lane Departure Warning and Rear Cross Traffic Alert Systems. Also included in our test drive vehicle was a Panoramic Sunroof.
Kia's top ranked warranty is included to cover Basic - 5 years/ 60,000 miles and Powertrain - 10 years/ 100,000 miles. The Hybrid Electrical Components are covered for 10years/ 100,000 miles.
The base price of the Optima Hybrid EX is $25,995. The base price of our test model, the EX, was $30,990. With options and delivery our vehicle cost totaled $36,885.
BUTTOM LINE: It appears the future will be filled with hybrid models. Be sure to take another look at the Kia Optima Hybrid EX at your local dealer for a hybrid option filled with state-of-the-art features and design.

2017 Prius Prime - 'A Bell Ringer'
By Bob Kroupa
By Bob Kroupa
We were treated to a test drive of Toyota's newly designed Prius Prime plug-in hybrid. It was quite to our liking as you will soon see. Introduced at the 2016 New York Auto Show, this latest model from this long established nameplate is an interesting vehicle in many respects.
Being as I was about to make a new acquaintanceship with a hybrid plug-in, my immediate curiosity was understanding the specific 'charge' details. I was impressed with the simplicity of the routine and its results. The charge cable, 30 feet in length, can be plugged into a 110 household/garage/outdoor outlet to provide a full charge in 5.5 hours enabling the Prius to drive 25 miles on the battery alone. Using a 240 outlet reduces the charge time to 2.5 hours with the same battery mileage capacity.
A supplemental 1.8 liter - 4 cylinder gasoline engine automatically kicks in when the original battery charge is depleted to provide a total of a 640 mile driving range. The MPG of the gasoline engine is rated at 55/53/54 (city/highway/combined). The total horsepower of the four banger and two electric motor generators produced 121 HP.
Driving the initial battery charge took me back to the days of performance acceleration without the roar of the engine. This particular drive included a short Interstate jaunt where I reached the 70 MPH speed limit in just seconds, quite remarkable considering I was working with a total of 121 HP and this was strictly from the battery performance.
After I exited the Interstate I made several stops before returning to home-base with a few miles left from my initial charge. I had initially thought that 25 miles on a charge was a low number, however, it sustained my entire original trip. The ride and drivability provided good handling and a comfortable ride.
The styling of the Prius Prime is unique as the body design has an innovative sculptured design in its front, side and rear appearance. The sleek front end is reminiscent of Toyota's Miria fuel cell vehicle, with the Prius' striking Quad-LED projector headlights, available fog lights and accent lights set in a 'scoop' like body design.
The upper side body fins start at the front edge of the rear door and become integrated into a rear spoiler. This is a very classy design feature.
The rear treatment carries the new design with dramatic rear horizontal tail lights and dual wave rear glass flowing into the rear spoiler for enhanced efficiency.
Inside the cabin of this stylish vehicle are two bucket seats for the front passengers with deep bolsters for body-hugging comfort. The rear bench seat is limited to seating for two adults (due to the larger battery space requirements), is divided by a large armrest and had a folding 60/40 split seat configuration for ease of hauling cargo and other requirements.
Centered in the dash is an 11.6 inch vertical multimedia touch-screen (standard with some models) with control functions and navigation selections. In addition there are temperature, audio, volume and other controls alongside the screen.
Below the screen is the shift mechanism and drive mode selections. The console between the front seats contains a flat wireless indentation with charge capabilities to hold my i-Phone. Also included in our vehicle were two of our favorite features, a color head's display and a heated steering wheel.
A BIG-PLUS from the Prius folks was the inclusion of Toyota's Safety Sense P. as standard on all Prius Prime models that features forward collision warning with pedestrian warning and automatic breaking, high beams, adaptive cruise control and lane departure warning with steering assist. Our 'Advanced' model was also equipped with blind spot monitoring and rear cross traffic alert as standard features.
Our test drive vehicle, Prius Prime Advanced, had a list price of $33,300. The base price of the entry model Prius Prime Plus starts at $27,100.
BOTTOM LINE: This Toyota Prius plug-in hybrid is definitely worthy of a strong consideration!

2016 Toyota Prius
By Jim Jackson
Toyota introduced its ‘green car’ movement to America in 2001 with the premiere of the gasoline/electric Prius Hybrid.
Today, Toyota Prius champions the hybrid segment with 3.5 million global sales.
For 2016, Toyota delivers the fourth generation Prius to market with sculpted styling and enhanced handling for a more spirited driving experience without sacrificing mileage.
I tested the 2016 Prius 5-door liftback in real-world traffic and on a special autocross handling course to compare it to the outgoing Prius model.
The handling difference is noticeably improved with the placement of the battery beneath the rear seat to create a lower center of gravity.
Overall dimensions are larger for a more planted footprint complemented by the model’s first double wishbone rear suspension. The new suspension greatly reduces body roll when cornering and provides remarkable sure-footed handling brazed with a 60-percent increase in chassis rigidity.
COMING UNPLUGGED
Prius is the most fuel-efficient car without a plug sold in the U.S. with sales that consistently clear 100,000 units annually over recent years. Five of the six 2016 Prius trim levels come with a lithium-ion battery pack. The base Prius-2 version utilizes a nickel-metal hydride battery.
All are powered by a 1.8-liter gasoline engine and electric motor for a combined 121 horsepower managed by a continuously variable (automatic) transmission to achieve 54 miles per gallon in town and 52 mpg on the highway.
A lighter, specially equipped Prius-2 ECO model has the potential of 58 mpg/city and 56 mpg/highway.
Three modes customize the driving dynamics with ‘ECO’ mode maximizing fuel economy and ‘Power’ mode that enhances acceleration. Use of ‘Normal’ mode creates a fun-to-drive balance between the ECO and Power settings.
CREATURE COMFORT
The 2016 Prius interior delivers contemporary quarters belted for five occupants. Four adults ride comfortably in contoured seats that are positioned lower for greater visibility and headroom while providing better back and hip support. Cabin room is uncluttered and spacious surrounded by soft touch surfaces. The center stack is revised and less button busy with easy to manage controls. An available 10-speaker JBL premium audio system enhances the passenger accommodations. Technology Firsts include a self-park feature and a dynamic cruise control system that brings the vehicle to a full stop at speeds under 20 mph.
The 2016 Toyota Prius is priced from $25,035 with freight.

Now in its fourth generation, the 2016 RAV4 receives a refreshed front end design that reflects the styling cues of Toyota’s passenger cars, while bold new LED tail lamps dominate its tall sculpted rear fascia.
The RAV4 Hybrid enters 2016 accompanied by the sporty new RAV4 SE model that showcases unique 18-inch wheels, blacked-out mesh grille and available silver body cladding. RAV4 SE is also equipped with a sport-tuned suspension and performance tires.
The front-drive RAV4 SE joins LE, XLE and Limited models powered by a 2.5 liter 4-cylinder engine that builds 176 horsepower coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. All-wheel drive is available.
Fuel economy for the 2.5L is rated at 24 miles per gallon/city and 31 mpg/highway. The 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid teams the 2.5L gasoline engine with front- and rear-axle electric motors for a combined 194 hp. to yield 34 mpg/city and 31 mpg/hwy.
All-wheel drive with “intelligence” is the sole drivetrain for the new RAV4 Hybrid managed by a continuously variable transmission. With AWD-i, power is dedicated to the front wheels under normal driving conditions. When loss of traction or stability is detected the rear electric motor engages to send torque to the back wheels for added grip.
Hill Start Assist and rear vision camera is standard across the 2016 RAV4 lineup.
Inside, five occupants enjoy an upgraded cabin that features soft touch surfaces on the door panels and center console with standard Entune infotainment system along with navigation depending on model. Quarters are roomy for four adults. When unoccupied, the second row folds down, although not flat, to create over 70 cubic feet of carrying capacity. The cargo floor is adjustable and reached by an available power operated rear hatch lid.
Price for the base 2016 Toyota RAV4 LE begins at $24,350. The new Hybrid model starts at $28,370, followed by SE for $29,265.

Toyota Avalon Hybrid

We wrap up the 2014 model year with our latest 'ride and drive' report on Toyota's flagship sedan, the Avalon Hybrid Limited. Our test drive hybrid, rated as a mid-size sedan, had an appealing body design, unlike any others in the Camry classification: one would actually think this was a new Lexus model. The cabin hosted a clean design with matching trim and an abundance of premium leather with stitching that added to the quality and stylish appearance of the seats.
The front seats were ventilated to accommodate both cooling and heating features and were quite comfortable as well. Notably, the rear seats included the heated feature along with a temperature control for both heat and air-conditioning. The outer seats in the rear cabin were contoured providing two of the rear passengers with total comfort for short or long drives. The middle rear seat, however, could not really accommodate an adult due to the raised seat cushion and lack of head room. Bottom line: This was an excellent choice for those needing space for four adults.
We found the trunk space at 14 cubic feet to be more than adequate for luggage/golf clubs or large packages. In fact, the Avalon's trunk provided more space than most hybrids we have seen.
Powered by a 2.5 liter four-cylinder motor and two electric motors, this hybrid pumps out a total of 200 horsepower. These are coupled with an electronic CVT transmission. Acceleration is a smooth flow reaching 60 MPH in approximately 8 seconds. As expected with a hybrid, in city driving it provides 40 MPG and 39 MPG on the highway. As we drove over 200 miles, we noted the instrument panel reflected we had another 350 miles remaining until refueling was required.
The Avalon was feature rich with Bluetooth wireless, audio streaming, navigation, phone connectivity and auxiliary input ports. The JBL audio system with nine speakers provided concert hall performance quality sound.
From a safety perspective, the Avalon is well equipped with features including stability control, blind spot monitor with rear cross traffic alert, pre-collision system and air bags for front and rear passengers.
The MSRP price for Toyota's top of the line hybrid Avalon is $41,400. On a comparative basis, a non-hybrid Limited model is $39,650.
The price differential for this hybrid seems minimal when you add up all the ecological and economic benefits, even with the lower price of gas these days. The Avalon is definitely worthy of consideration, not knowing what tomorrow may bring.

Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid
The new Porsche Panamera S E-Hybrid may be the smoothest hybrid-powered sport sedan on the market today. It's the first plug-in hybrid from the German automaker and joins an expanding sports sedan lineup.
With the S E-Hybrid launch, the Panamera line-up increases to nine individual models that offer an extended range between sportiness and comfort. In addition to the S E-Hybrid, there are three more new variants and two luxurious Executive versions for the Panamera 4S and Panamera Turbo models. The Executive versions have an extended wheelbase and a completely new 3.0 twin-turbo V-6 engine.
The new Panamera S E-Hybrid improves on the concept offered by the previous Panamera S Hybrid with a more powerful electric motor, a higher-performance battery that supplies more energy and is able be recharged from home or public vehicle charging stations. The electric drive produces 95 hp, more than double the power of the previous model’s electric motor (47 hp). Electricity is stored in a newly developed lithium-ion battery, which at 9.4 kWh has increased capacity over the previous battery (1.7 kWh). Via the integrated on-board charging components and the standard Porsche Universal Charger (AC), the battery can reach full charge within approximately two-and-a-half hours when connected to a 240V power source. The Panamera S E-hybrid can accelerate from a standstill to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds and clocks a top speed of 167 mph. Executive models are equipped with Adaptive air-suspension featuring Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), which combines superior performance and enhanced ride comfort.
The first generation of Panamera models set benchmarks for performance and vehicle dynamics in their class, but this second generation is even
better. Porsche developed an entirely new engine for the new generation Panamera S and 4S models. Systematic downsizing has resulted in an engine with two fewer cylinders. It is closely related to the 3.6-liter V-6 in the Panamera and Panamera 4, but its displacement was reduced to 3.0 liters. Twin turbo chargers let the new engine develop five per cent more power at 420 hp. The new engine also has an improved torque curve; maximum torque of 384 pounds-feet is available between 1,750 and 5,000 rpm, which offers instantaneous torque in most driving situations.
The new Panamera 4S Executive and Panamera Turbo Executive models, have a wheelbase extended by 5.9 inches, enabling even more rear seating comfort, and come with an extensive range of standard features. For example, all Executive models are equipped with Adaptive air-suspension featuring Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), which combines superior performance and enhanced ride comfort.
Pricing ranges from $78,100 for the base Panamera to $161,100 for the Turbo Executive, while the S E-Hybrid has an MSRP of $99,000.
