2021 Lexus RC F Sport
By Larry Rust
My first response on seeing this car was, "This car is HOT!". It was a bright sunny morning in February when the car was delivered for my test drive. The color of the coupe is appropriately called "Infrared" and, man, did it stand out! RC stands for Radical Coupe and the "F" series is an upgrade to the standard version of the RC. The Lexus RC F Sport has been around since 2014.
The RC F Sport is relatively unchanged from the 2020 model. However, new for 2021 is an optional Black Line Special Edition. It features premium triple beam LED headlights, 19-inch F Sport Black Chrome wheels, exterior colors of Ultra White or Cloudburst Grey, dark exhaust tips, and an interior trimmed in ash wood.
The interior is impressive with its fine craftsmanship and detail. In the center of the dash is an attractive, round analog clock. A digital clock is located on the instrument panel. The driver's seat is very comfortable and fit me like a glove. Rear seat legroom is limiting for adults but, most likely, fine for children. As I closed the door, the steering wheel and column automatically moved into a pre-set position. Additionally, the driver's door window, which had lowered itself slightly when the door was opened, shut itself. I am assuming that, since the cabin has been well insulated against outside engine and road noise, this procedure is needed to close the door without a lot of resistance. Similarly, when the door is opened the window opens a crack and closes again when the door is closed.
When I first saw the Info screen, I wondered why it was placed so far back from the driver's seat and out of reach. Then I realized it was not the touch screen but only the display. The touch pad and controls are actually right next to the driver on the console. It was easy to figure out how to navigate through the system to find various modes and information.
The power plant in this coupe is a 3.5 L V6, putting out 311 HP at 6,600 RPM, and is connected to a 6-speed automatic transmission. There are steering wheel mounted paddle shifters as well as the full-time all wheel drive. The coupe is responsive and handles very well in the ice and snow. Braking is enhanced by 13.2 in. ventilated discs in front and 12.2 in. ventilated discs in the rear.
The audio system has been upgraded from the standard 10-speaker sound system to the Mark Levinson 17-speaker, 835 watt surround sound system which adds $1080 to the bottom line. I am not sure how this compares to the base audio system but this particular unit sounds great.
Other interior features include a 7-in. color display, push button start/stop, with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability. Additionally, it is Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa enabled. The vehicle has a 10-way power driver's seat, an 8-way power passenger's seat, dual zone climate control, a rear view auto dimming mirror, a HomeLink garage door opener, carpeted floor mats, and even a first aid kit!
The F Sport package features bolstered front seats which are heated and ventilated. A memory system for the driver's seat, outside mirrors, and steering wheel are part of the package. For added convenience, the steering wheel is power tilting and telescoping. The Drive Mode allows the driver to select between Eco, Normal, Sport S, Sport S+ or Custom modes. Also featured is suspension tuning with an adaptive variable suspension and 19-in. split five spoke alloy wheels.
Added options, besides the premium audio system, include triple beam LED headlights, rain sensing wipers, intuitive parking assist, premium paint and a power moonroof.
Safety systems include a backup camera, a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection , High Speed Dynamic Radar cruise control, lane departure alert with steering assist, intelligent high beams, and a blind spot monitor with rear cross traffic alert. As for air bags, there are eight located strategically throughout the cabin.
The base price of this RC F Sport is $51,130.00. With a few options and delivery, the MSRP for the vehicle I drove tops off at $56,590.00.
If you are looking for a luxury two door sport coupe, the Lexus RC F sport is a must to see and drive!

2020 FORD MUSTANG ECOBOOST CONVERTIBLE
By Bob Kroupa
We all remained concerned about the coronavirus pandemic and how it has touched each of us including recommended actions to keep ourselves and our families safe from the spread of Covid19. However, these concerns were not on my mind in my anticipation of receiving this Mustang Convertible. But it was on the minds of Drive Shop's John Harper who had installed a regimen using a 'non-contact' delivery system or process. Their vehicles are sanitized at their work location, then driven to us. The vehicle is parked and the key fob is left in a sanitized bag for our use and review. This 'touchless' routine provided a safe start to our review routine. Thanks, Drive Shop team, for thinking of safety all around!
When you see the photos of this Mustang Convertible with its eye-catching Velocity Blue color and Ebony cloth seats and a Black Convertible top, you will quickly realize why I was immediately delighted to see it on my driveway! With a metallic gray hood accent strip and hood vents along with 19" low gloss ebony aluminum wheels, this whole package added to the outstanding curb appeal of this neat Mustang.
Early in her adult life, my wife had a 1965 Cobalt Blue Mustang. When she first saw this test drive vehicle on the drive, she had a sudden flashback, a very enjoyable one she admitted. With this Mustang Convertible, we had a chance to drive down Memory Lane.
Back to this review: We noted the LED headlamps with signature lighting, LED tail lamps with sequential turn signal and the active valve performance twin tipped dual exhaust. From an interior perspective, cloth bucket seats with bolster support added to our seating comfort.
The instrument panel provided many of the convenient controls for a wealth of information. Included were the selectable drive modes with toggle switches, dual zone temperature controls, AM/FM Stereo with MP3 Player, 8"LCD touch screen in center stack with swiping capability, AppleLink, Apply CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, two smart charging USB ports, and Sirius Radio. Also to our liking were the individual oil pressure and boost gauges. The steering wheel provided a full array of controls for radio, phone, cruise control and dash settings.
The rear seat was adequate for small children but tight for adults with 29.2" of leg room space. Cargo Trunk space was rated at 11.4 cu..ft.
The Convertible top control was quite simple. Turning a knob centrally located above the windshield and a touch on the lowering switch automatically lowered all of the windows as well as the top within seconds. Very smooth and 21st century! The top fit flush with the side body panels providing a cool look with the tourneau side caps.
Of course the big news for the 2020 Mustang was the 2.3L High Performance package that provides entry-level Mustang buyers the first high performance EcoBoost engine powered by Ford Performance to deliver 330 HP and 350 lb./ft. of torque achieved with premium fuel. This hot '4-banger' was coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission.
The High Performance Package also includes several handling enhancements like the Mustang GT brakes, performance tires and chassis and aerodynamics hardware from the Mustang GT Performance Package.
Safety equipment included the standard eight air bags for driver, passenger, knee, as well as dual stage front, front seat and mounted side impact. Also included was SOS Post Crash Alarm System, side mirrors with integrated blind spot, and rear view camera.
Our test drive provided an opportunity to trial the performance minded EcoBoost engine on a nearby interstate with a 70 MPH speed limit. Starting from a stopped position on the entrance ramp with the drive mode in the Sport Mode position, we reached the 70 MPH speed limit in just a very few seconds - WOW!!
Ford related the 0-60 MPH is in the mid-4 second range on premium fuel, with top speed increasing to 155 MPH, a 10 MPH gain over the 2019 EcoBoost Performance Package and 34 MPH faster than the base EcoBoost Mustang. Since our interstate trip exceeded 60 miles, we did further safe testing: no comment required other than YES!
Driving on rural roads with several sharp turns, the Mustang hugged the road providing us with safe control at all times. In-town driving with the top down provided us with many 'thumbs up'! Hats off to the Ford Performance Garage Team - a job well down!
The fuel economy of this special Mustang was reported at 20/28/23 City/Highway/Combined MPG. The base price of our Mustang EcoBoost Convertible was $32,170. With the 2.3L High Performance Package (includes the high performance EcoBoost 330 HP motor) and Equipment Group 101A, our total price including destination and delivery came to $40,260.
BOTTOM LINE: If you are looking for a fun convertible or coupe with performance capability and lots of history, the 2020 Mustang EcoBoost needs to be at the top of your test car list.

2020 Lexus RC 350 F Sport

Preliminary to writing a review of a test drive is receiving the vehicle. So, as I prepare to 'pen' this review, an appropriate comment or two about the delivery process is in order.
We are all concerned about the coronavirus pandemic everyday and it has touched each of us and how we live our lives each day including recommended actions to keep ourselves and our families safe from the spread of Covid19. However, these concerns were not on my mind in my anticipation of receiving this test vehicle. A job well done, thanks for thinking of safety all around!
In today's new vehicle marketplace, stylish two-door coupes are not commonplace. But Lexus has delivered a sleek sculptured luxury sport coupe to catch everyone's eye with all of the curb appeal one would want and expect from the Lexus stable of vehicles. The first thing to catch our eye was the 350 F Sport model's 19" split five spoke alloy wheels, bold yellow calipers, exterior badging, a modified signature spindle grill, LED stacked headlamps with intergraded daytime running lights and at the rear, new LED tail lights integrated into a reshaped bumper. At a glance, this is not your base model. Very stylishly sporty.
The interior of our test model provided us with F Sport bolstered front heated and ventilated seats with 10-way (driver and 8-way passenger) power adjustments retracting each seat back towards the rear seats for a long stretch and sport ride. The leg spacing of the rear seat are adequate at best, however have a 60/50 split fold-down capability to enhance the 10.4 cu.-ft. of truck capacity.
The RC 350 F Sport was well equipped with driver and convenience features. Included are: Bluetooth and UBS smartphone connectivity with Apple CarPlay, color TFT multi-information display, Multimedia and Connected Services, Lexus Enform Remote System, Voice Command and Mobile Assistant and Amazon Alexa integration. We'd also be amiss if we didn't include the power moonroof and one our favorites, the heated steering wheel.
Powered by a 3.5 liter V-6 DOHC engine pumping out 311 horsepower, the torque is rated at 280 lb./ft @ 4,800. The engine is coupled with an 8-speed Sport Direct shift automatic transmission with paddle shifters mounted on the steering wheel.
Settings for driver selection include a Drive Mode Select of Eco, Normal, Sport S, Sport S+, Snow and Custom. These settings in part provide modified throttle response, transmission shift speed, steering response and suspension modification when selected.
From a safety perspective, the F Sport is equipped with many of the automated safety features that include Blind Sport Monitor (BSM), Rear Cross-Traffic Alert (RCTA), Lexus dynamic handling with rear steering and Variable Gear Ratio Steering (VGRS), Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure with Steering Assist, 8-air bags (with knee bags for driver and front passenger) and Backup Camera.
The most enjoyable part of the review is the test drive and this one was no different. Our 100 mile+ ride and drive provided us with a positive opinion of this limited production Coupe from Lexus. Our drive took us to on a 70 MPH Interstate, rural county roads and city driving. We were able to 'exercise' many of the reported features and options.
The ride was quite comfortable and at times, sedan like - smooth. Entering the interstate at full throttle brought us to the speed limit in a matter of seconds with a Lexus reported 0-60 MPH time of 5.8 seconds. Top track speed has been reported at 143 MPH (not by us, I might add!) Our ride on the interstate was notably quiet allowing us to take advantage of the Mark Levinson PurePlay 17 speaker, 835 Wall Premium Surround Sound Audio System, and Sirius Radio.
The Navigation System with the 10.3" Color Multimedia Display directed us to the rural roads with many sharp turns. This was our opportunity to select the Drive Mode Sport S selection which improved the handling of the Lexus 350 F Sport. On tight turns, the Dynamic Handling and Rear Steering were active providing outstanding safe control of the vehicle on the hilly and curvy rural roads. Returning to local city driving, the size and performance of the vehicle was perfect, including the Intuitive Parking Assist. Fuel economy was rated at 20 City, 28 Highway and 23 MPG combined.
The base price of the 2020 Lexus RC 350 F Sport is $49,295. The list price of our vehicle including options and delivery, processing and handling fee was $58,615.
BOTTOM LINE: A trip to your Lexus dealer is worthwhile to view and test drive this special two-door coupe - a real purchase opportunity in today's market.

2019 FORD MUSTANG GT PREMIUM COUPE
By Bob Kroupa
This week it was time for our annual 'Ride & Drive' in one of Ford's performance vehicles - the Mustang GT. The Mustang was introduced at the World's Fair in Flushing Meadows, NY on April 17, 1964, this well planned introduction included the unveiling the same day at Ford dealerships across the US. As a follow-on, a White 1965 convertible was the Pace Car that year at the 1965 Indianapolis 500 Race.
Interestingly, with the base price of $2,368, Ford had high hopes for this new vehicle and projected sales during the introduction year at 100,000 units! Much to their surprise and delight, 380,000 units actually sold during the introduction, but the real news was during the first 18 months in the market, the Ford Mustang sold over one million units and 'rang the sales bell' big time. It was the beginning of the American love affair with the Mustang.
Forward to August 2018 when Ford and the Mustang team celebrated the 10 MILLIONTH Mustang built, a White convertible with a V-8 engine and 6-speed manual transmission. The first serialized 1964.5 Ford Mustang, VIN #001, was also a White Convertible with a V-8 engine, but a 3-speed manual transmission - how far the technology has come! Today at the 6 month mark, 2019 sales are 38,542 units while the 2018 annual sales were 75,842 units.
The exterior trim on our 2019 Mustang GT has been modified to include subtle raised sheet metal at and below the belt line, a modified hood with two trimmed vent ports and enhanced LED lighting with rear sequential turn signals. These, along with the rear spoiler, dual-exhaust with quad tips, rear GT logo and Pony logo on the front grill and wheel hubs, loudly shout that this is a performance Mustang.
Entering the cabin, our thought process was immediately, 'Well Done!', when we saw the illuminated door scuff plates, Recaro Leather Trim Sport Seats, aluminum pedals, dual zone temperature controls and Pony display on the instrument panel screen.
The rear seat is a bit tight from a current adult size perspective, however, the GT has a 50/50 folding capability expanding the trunk cargo space. With the seat in the upright position, the trunk can haul two golf club bags easily. This is definitely a Sports Car - not a sedan.
The infotainment system includes the 12" LCD digital instrument cluster, navigation system, SYNC3 (the easy to use responsive voice-activated and touch screen technology). SYNC3 brings the power of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility to the Mustang. Of course, also included was the Ford Pass App.
Prior to our test drives we noted the Safety features of our Mustang GT. It had the usual array of air bags including dual stage driver and front passenger knee, front section side and side curtain, Further features are also available: lane assist, lane departure warning, blind spot monitoring and park assist.
Our Mustang GT was powered by the 5.0L TI-VCT 460 HP, V-8 engine rated at 420 lb.-ft. Torque. Coupled with a 6-speed manual transmission and the Performance Pack 1, our Mustang begged to be driven!
Driving it on the Interstate with a speed limit of 70 MPH (in what gear? It's been reported that 3rd gear has the capability of 100 MPH+) we tested the performance factor in all gears and reached the 70 MPH speed in a flash! This is quite a performance machine.
Off the interstate traveling on curved country roads, the Mustang GT handled flawlessly. Our GT included the Magne-Ride Damping System option adding to the ride, along with the selective ride modes. Fuel economy is reported at 15 city/24 highway/18 combined MPG.
The GT Premium has a base price of $$39,355 and with the options on our test GT, the total package price was $51,225.
OUR BOTTOM LINE: If a daily drive with performance capability is your dream, the 2019 Ford Mustang GT is worthy of a consideration!

2018 FORD MUSTANG GT COUPE PREMIUM

When I received notification that a 2018 Mustang would soon be delivered for our evaluation, it brought back great memories. I purchased 'our' first Mustang, a Dark Moss Green 1967 Coupe, base 289 from a neighbor who I had just found out was going to be trading it in for a new vehicle.
With a young son in the household, I knew this could be the perfect 'father & son' project. Of course our first project was to change out the stock exhaust to dual exhausts with 'Hollywood' mufflers. Being 'noise' guys, the new exhaust was music to our ears! We still talk about that ROAR!
Fast forward to the arrival of our test drive 2018 GT. It was decked out with one of the new 2018 exterior colors, Orange Fury Metallic Tri Coat (a $495 paint color option). What a pop of color on our driveway!
It really gave quite the appearance from a curb appeal especially when we took in the 19" Ebony Black painted aluminum wheels, sloping new hood, all LED signature front lighting, low beams, turn signals, projector high beams and fog lights. Adding even more pizzazz to the rear treatment was the LED tail lamps with sequential turn signals, performance rear wing and quad tip dual exhaust.
There was no mistaken identity with the PONY logo front and center in the grill and bold GT centered on the rear trunk lid between the LED tail lamps - both neatly done.
Inside, the cabin was better than ever and a real treat as I settled in the supportive, comfortable leather front seats with a heat/cool selection. A 12" LCD digital instrument cluster with MyColor caught my eye. It allows the driver to select a personalized gauge layout. The infotainment features included Fords SYNC3 touch screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, navigation system with voice activation, Wi-Fi network, Sirius XM radio plus more.
A nod to the past was the combination of the selectable drive modes of normal, snow/wet, sport, track or drag strip toggle switches in the center stack - nice touch!
Wrapping up the interior was the somewhat functional but under-sized rear seat. This would be a bit small for an average sized adult, however it would provide good cargo hauling space with its 60/40 split rear seat, folding flat for extended space from the trunk.
Now for the fun stuff! This GT is powered by a 5.0 L DOHC 32-valve V8 rated at 460HP @ 7,000 RPM and 420 lb.-ft. torque. The engine is teamed with a revised MT-82 with Dual Mass Flywheel and Twin Disc clutch 6-speed manual transmission allowing for smooth shifting.
It was now time to put the wheels in motion. We planned our route and started the GT and relived the ROAR of our memories all over again. The roar our Active Valve Performance Exhaust provided caused us to 'tune the music' to a quiet, normal, sport or track mode! Great selection! We headed to a remote entrance location onto the Interstate (posted speed at 70 MPH) and accelerated through the gears reaching 80 MPH in a flash - time to slow down! Ford's 0-60 MPH is reported at 3.9 seconds with a top speed of 155 MPH.
Our road trip took us off the Interstate onto country roads when the Magne-Ride Damping System that responds to changing road conditions 1,000 times per second. The end result is a smooth handling ride regardless of negative road conditions. In addition the suspension has been fine tuned to improve handling - well done as we drove the many curves on our mountain roads.
The GT begs to be driven, the many stop lights we encountered off the Interstate were notable as we were able to 'run the gears' frequently enjoying our exhaust music! The fuel rating for the GT is 15/18/25 (city/combined/highway MPG.
Safety features included the normal array of airbags including driver, passenger and knee bags. Also the rear view camera, pre-collision with pedestrian detection, distance alert, lane-departure warning, land-keeping assist, Driver Alert System, Brake Assist and SOS Post-Crash Alert System come standard.
Base Price of our GT Premium was $39,190. Options and delivery brought the price of our test drive vehicle to $49,370.
BOTTOM LINE: If you are in the market for a new base Mustang and/or one with many performance options, visit your local Ford Dealer - you won't be disappointed in the Mustang GT!

2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt
By Jim Jackson
PHOENIX - Ford accelerates the 2018 model year with the roll out of its next-generation Mustang Bullitt.
The 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt is the third in a series of special limited-edition Mustang GT Coupes the Detroit automaker has created to pay homage to the 1968 Mustang GT Fastback driven by late actor Steve McQueen in that year’s Hollywood blockbuster San Francisco car-chase movie, “BULLITT”.
Mustang Bullitt editions were previously produced in 2001 and 2008/2009 model years.
Ford tributes the 2019 version to mark the film’s 50th anniversary with a modern-day interpretation of the Mustang Bullitt movie car painted the same Dark Highland Green with like five-spoke wheels and a powerful V8 engine.
The 2019 Bullitt is also available in Shadow Black body color.
Ford’s 2019 Bullitt features a 5.0-liter V8 engine that builds at least 475 horsepower, an increase of 15-hp over the standard Mustang GT, and 420 pound-feet of torque. An open air induction along with an intake manifold and other engine enhancements borrowed from the Ford Shelby GT350 create the power increase.
A six-speed manual only transmission governs the powertrain with a white cue-ball shift knob that is a throwback to the 1968 movie car.
Today’s Bullitt comes with 2019 Mustang GT Premium and GT Performance Packages that include a beefed-up suspension, enhanced steering and braking components, summer performance tires and limited-slip differential. And active valve performance exhaust and black exhaust tips are also factory provided. And like the original, Bullitt’s styling remains understated with minimal chrome trim, deleted spoiler, classic Torq-Thrust style 19-inch aluminum wheels and blackout grille.
Usual Mustang badges, insignias and stripes are removed. An artificial gas cap with Bullitt crosshairs moniker on the rear valance makes claim to the car’s origin.
Standard equipment includes a heated steering wheel with Bullitt crosshair insignia, green stitched leather upholstery, center console, dash and door panels. A 12-inch digital instrument cluster with special green Bullitt display screen is also standard.
An Electronics Package with navigation, memory driver seat and mirror setting, upgraded sound system, blind spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert is available. Other options include Recaro performance seats and MagneRide adaptive damping suspension.
The 2019 Ford Mustang Bullitt goes on sale now for $46,595.

2018 Lexus GS F Sport Sedan
By Jim Jackson
Lexus F series is recognized for its unconventional front end styling. Onlookers either love it or hate it.
Lexus designs are okay with that and embrace the difference of opinion citing it starts a conversation about the Lexus brand. Indeed it does.
Lexus GS F touts the brand’s radial looks wrapped in 4-door sport attire punctuated by an oversized deep-drop spool-shaped grille that dominates the car’s front end. Adding to the bold appearance are slim sweptback LED headlamps that feature bright “check-mark” daytime running lights. Functional air intake ports anchor the aggressive look. But what the outside promises, Lexus GS F delivers with a 5.0-liter V-8 engine that builds 467 horsepower managed by an 8-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel mounted “F” spec paddle shifters for performance that eclipses 0-60 miles per hour in 4.4 seconds.
Independent-front and multilink rear suspension with stabilizer bars along with Brembo ventilated disc brakes aid control and forward momentum.
A standard Drive Mode System gives the driver selection of Normal, ECO, Sport and Sport S+ performance dynamics. Sport mode delivers brisk throttle response while Sport S+ gains quicker downshifts that benefit aggressive driving through corners and during hard braking. Sport S+ also holds gears longer for enhanced control and exit speed through corners. ECO mode adjusts the output of power and the climate control system for more economical operation, while Normal mode finds the best of both worlds by balancing the fuel economy and engine output.
Inside, Lexus GS F dons a well-appointed interior with smooth leather trimmed “F” spec sport seats complimented by Alcantara suede accents on the door, armrest and upper instrument panel. A “F” leather wrapped steering wheel, color head-up windshield display, 10-way power adjustable driver seat, sport peddles, power and tilt/slide moonroof with one touch open/close feature come standard.
Front passenger and driver seats are comfortable and offer good support as does the three passenger rear bench. However, back seat hip and legroom is cramped for three adult riders. Headroom is also abbreviated in the rear quarters due to the pitch of the sloping roofline making the space there best suited for youngsters.
The unconventional look and roughneck demeanor of the F sport sedan is a brand carry-over for the 2018 Lexus GS F priced to start at $84,350.

2018 Subaru WRX STi Type RA
By Jim Jackson
Subaru cars have eclipsed 50 years in the U.S. auto market. First to premiere was the 1968 Subaru 360 - a rear-engine, city runabout manufactured by the Japanese car company from 1958 to 1971. The bantam 2-door weighs only 850 pounds and is the first production vehicle for the Subaru brand.
Today, Subaru pulls back the curtain to reveal their limited production 2018 Subaru WRX STi Type RA. Based off the automaker’s WRX sedan, the 2018 WRX STi brings a level of performance to the street honed from the World Rally racing circuits.
Only 500 copies of the STi Type RA are built, spawned from last year’s successful 4-door sedan speed record attempt (RA) at the fabled German Nurburgring road course in a modified Subaru WRX STi.
With 305 horsepower generated from a 2.5-liter turbocharged intercooled boxer (flat) four-cylinder engine, the 2018 Subaru WRX STi Type RA is the closest a Subaru loyalist can get to a factory-built race car in today’s market.
Subaru WRX STi Type RA comes with all-wheel drive and a close-ratio six-speed manual transmission.
RA’s power assisted rack-and-pinion steering is remarkably quick and irons out S-curves with weighted control that requires less steering wheel input while Subaru’s Active Torque Vectoring AWD provides Velcro-like grip on pavement. STI’s multi-mode Driver Controlled Center Differential (DCCD) operated by center console switchgear, customizes the all-wheel grip for spirited driving.
Meanwhile, anti-lock ventilated and cross-drilled Brembo brakes safely rein Type RA’s forward momentum.
The five occupant cabin is performance driven with a flat-bottom D-shaped Alcantara clad steering wheel that fronts an at-a-glance gauge cluster for easy recognition of gear selection, speed and other critical driver information.
Race-inspired Recaro front bucket seats come standard and are well bolstered to fit today’s American-framed driver and front passenger comfortably. Back seat riders enjoy adult-size legroom. However, ride quality suffers from RA’s stiff sport-tuned suspension. Road noise also bleeds into the cabin while at cruising speed. Under power, all is masked by STi’s throaty exhaust.
With a prudent throttle, fuel economy of 16 miles per gallon in town and 22 mpg on the highway can be accomplished.
Price for the 2018 Subaru WRX STi Type RA is $49,855 including freight. An exhilarating driving experience is a no-cost option.
2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon
By Jim Jackson
By Jim Jackson
MARTIN, MICH. – October’s above normal temperatures helped raise the devil at U.S. 131 Motorsports Park for the launch of the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon. And like the weather, this road test is not typical with driver seat time accumulated in one-quarter mile increments while piloting this factory-built dealer sold automotive monster.
The Dodge Demon nameplate is resurrected from the 1971 original packing a 340 cubic inch V-8 engine that generated 290 horsepower and a sticker price of $2,721. Today’s Demon comes with a supercharged 6.2 liter HEMI V-8 that runs on premium fuel to build 808 horsepower and 717 pound-feet of torque at a cost of $84,995 including $1700 gas guzzler tax.
The 2018 Dodge Demon is the first street-legal factory-production car designed to run on 100-plus unleaded high-octane fuel that boosts engine output to 840-hp and 770 lb-ft of torque.
Managing the powerplant is an 8-speed automatic transmission with Demon exclusive TransBrake system.
An available Demon Crate, valued at $6,140, cost buyers only one U.S. dollar for factory performance components that transforms the street Demon into a track-purpose Drag Car. Demon Crate comes with two narrow, front running drag wheels, track tools and related equipment that can be securely transported in the Demon trunk. The crate provides the first-ever front-wheel lift (2.92 feet) in a production car and affords a professional driver the tact to eclipse a quarter mile in a record 9.65 seconds at 140 miles per hour.
Demon comes shipped from the factory with no front passenger seat, rear bench seat or trunk liner. Only a driver seat is provided. Buyers can purchase those select items at a cost of $1 each. Other options set with real-world prices include leather upholstery, premium audio system, sunroof, satin black graphics package and black painted satin hood.
I drove an 840–hp 100-octane fueled Demon on the street and took multiple passes down the drag strip. Demon is very compliant on public roads. Managing the throttle simply takes common sense discipline. My test car was later taken off the street and brought directly to the drag strip, unmodified, for chaperoned eighth-mile and solo quarter-mile test runs. Its track performance is overwhelmingly impressive.
I used Demon’s TransBrake system exclusively for burnouts and staged launches. TransBrake locks the transmission output shaft to hold the car in place for a standing start. This allowed me to increase the engine RPM up to 2,350 without overpowering the front brakes, resulting in quicker power and as much as 15 percent more torque at launch. The procedure is very precise and requires multi-step sequential impute to execute correctly. I found the technique confusing at first. Numerous runs helped familiarize me with the process. Once set in “Drag” mode and committed to the mechanical sequence procedure, the Demon is armed for take off and catapults off the light with the release of the steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters that trigger a G-Force launch unlike anything I’ve experienced in my 20-years as an automotive journalist. Although I improved my launch technique over time, I never lifted the front wheels off the asphalt.
“With Demon, our goal was to build a car that would tattoo the Dodge logo into the subconscious of the general market, beyond even our loyal enthusiasts,” says Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Car – Dodge, SRT, Chrysler and FIAT, FCA North America. “To do so, we had to set records that have never been set before, do more than has ever been done before and go beyond even the legendary (Dodge) Hellcat. The result is an 840-horsepower, 9-second muscle car unlike anything that has ever come before it.”
The 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is on sale now with production limited of 3,000 U.S. units sold at select Dodge/SRT dealers nationwide. Only 300 Demons are marked for the Canadian market.

2017 Alfa Romeo 4C Coupe
By Jim Jackson
By Jim Jackson
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has a number or racy nameplates in its corporate portfolio. Among them is the Italian-built Alfa Romeo. Alfa Romeo’s re-entry to the U.S. market came in 2014 with a sculpted 4C Coupe. Last week we got a jump on summer with the test of this year’s version.
The 2017 Alfa Romeo 4C Coupe is a pure driver machine that demands a driver’s attention and operating skill. Nothing is conventional about the 4C as it offers few concessions and a number of extremes. Sliding into the dual cockpit of the 4C Coupe takes agility as the low seat position is reached over wide door sills. Its low profile roof line tops the challenge even further. Ease of entry and exit from the cockpit is a true exercise that requires an established physical routine to accomplish gracefully.
Form-fitted seats and a race-inspired flat-bottom steering wheel greet the driver fronted by a simple straight-forward instrument panel. The steering mechanism is all manual with no power steering offered. Real-world cabin storage compartments don’t exist, although a small concealed cubby between the upper seat cushions and pair of shallow cup holders does. Trunk space is also at a premium with 3.7 cubic feet of cargo capacity located under the rear glass hatch in the engine compartment.
Alfa Romeo 4C Coupe’s mid-engine placement offers the illusion of extra trunk space under the “hood”. Not so. The forward bonnet is fixed and is not able to be opened without tools and serves as access to the front suspension and chassis underpinnings.
And don’t expect to sip a latte and drive the 4C Coupe. This rear-wheel drive sports car requires two hands on the wheel delivering immediate feedback from the road and precision steering response.
A zesty 1.7-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, located directly behind the passenger compartment, provides 237 horsepower managed by a six-speed twin-clutch transmission. The “manumatic” transmission shifts automatically or with use of manual steering wheel paddle-shifters. Four large buttons mounted on the center console place the car into gear with Automatic/Manual (A/M), First, Neutral and Reverse selection. To engage “Drive” requires pushing the First (1) button. “Park” requires depression of the Neutral (N) button and setting the parking brake. Reverse (R) is the simplest to master with a tap of the “R” button switch. A toggle switch on the console offers drivers choice of Dynamic, Normal and All-Weather settings each designed to enhance the throttle, transmission, differential and stability control systems. There is also a Race mode that turns all the stability control nannies off for a thrill ride that is best left for weekend track days.
Day-to-day ride quality is harsh with the 4C Coupe’s taut suspension. Rural blacktop helped soothe its unforgiving road manners. The constant drone of the mid-engine sound is quelled at highway speed as the RPMs drop to achieve fuel economy of 24 miles per gallon in town and 43-mpg on the open road.
Driving the 2017 Alfa Romeo 4C Coupe around town is an engaging experience, but at the cost of a constant barrage of onlookers and question askers once stopped at a destination. Owners must expect the curious to approach them and inquire about the car. That said, drivers should not assume running a quick errand will return them home in a timely fashion. Walk-around conversation with car enthusiasts and admirers become and inherent part of Alfa Romeo 4C Coupe ownership.
Our test model comes equipped with a Carbon Fiber Trim Package, dual-mode exhaust system and Track Package with race tuned sport suspension. Red leather trimmed bucket seats are a $1500 option. So is the Rosso Alfa Red exterior paint - likewise priced at $1500.
The 2017 Alfa Romeo 4C Coupe is available at 168 Alfa Romeo dealerships nationwide for a starting cost of $55,900. Price as tested is $71,045. Add $1,595 for freight from Modena, Italy.
2017 Fiat 124 Spider
By Jim Jackson
By Jim Jackson
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles opens the summer driving season with the return of the drop-top 2017 Fiat 124 Spider. First introduced in 1966, Fiat reinvents the iconic 124 Italian roadster with modern day styling cues that pay homage to the two-seat original. The Italian-inspired 2017 Fiat 124 Spider carries classic roadster proportions with 21-Century styling.
Today’s Fiat 124 Spider shares its architecture with the Japanese-built Mazda MX-5, delivered in Classica, up-scale Lusso and athletic Abarth trim levels set on a rear-drive/front engine platform. Though made in Japan, the new 124 Spider comes powered by an Italian-born 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that builds 160 horsepower paired with a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.
The performance-based Abarth wrings 164-hp out of the same 1.4L and adds steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters for hands-on gear selection. A matte black-painted hood, aggressive lower front fascia, quad exhaust and unique 17-inch wheels round out Abarth’s sporty appearance.
Spider’s cockpit appointments carry a clean driver-directed instrument panel that delivers easy to use switch gear for at-a-glance operation.
According to the automaker, Millennial and Generation-X drivers occupy 40-percent of the 124 Spider’s buyer space.
Without exception, the 2017 Fiat 124 Spider is fun to drive.
I had the chance to pepper the new Italian treat through the hill country of southern California where abundant S-curve pavement punctuates 124’s driving dynamics, dialed-in steering and exceptional handling.
Last week also provided me the opportunity to push the 124 Spider Abarth through a twisty autocross course to highlight the model’s mettle and factory Mopar equipment that features a Monza dual mode performance exhaust for and audible pep to its step.
As expected, top up touring delivers a quieter passenger compartment yet with typical roadster road noise heard through the canvas top. The convertible roof is manually raised or lowered in three seconds with use of a simple center-placed handle between the upper seatbacks that is within easy reach of the driver or passenger.
A Mopar equipped windscreen reduces the backwash wind turbulence from entering the two-seat cockpit with the top down.
The base equipped 2017 Fiat 124 Spider Classica with manual transmission starts at $24,995 followed by the Lusso model at $27,495.
Spider Abarth with manual gearbox or automatic transmission costs $28.195 and $29,545 respectively. Add $995 across the line for freight.

2017 FIAT 124 SPIDER
'Fiat Roadster Returns' by Bob Kroupa
At the Turnin, Italy Auto Show in November 1966, the Fiat 124 Spider was introduced to the world with great enthusiastic response. In 1968, the Spider crossed the 'pond' and was made available to the US consumer for the first time. The original roadster was a true sports car with broad appeal and featured a 5-speed manual transmission, 1438 CC twin cam engine and four-wheel disc brakes. Americans loved the Spider's proportions, Italian style and its water-tight convertible top that could be lowered with ease from the driver's seat.
Production ended in 1985 with a total production run of 200,000 units. Of interest was the fact that during the Spider's nineteen year production run, it was never extensively redesigned. More than 170,000 units were sold in the US from 1968-1985. The Spider became an Italian icon in the US for collectors and car buffs. Today, it has been reported that 8,000 units remain registered in the US.
At the 2015 Los Angeles Auto Show the reborn Fiat 124 Spider made its global debut return bringing its iconic Italian styling and performance to its previous admiring supporters and a new generation of buyers.
Fast forward to Greensboro, NC in November 2016 when we had the privilege of test driving the updated 2017 Fiat 124 Spider. The new Spider was designed at Centro Stile in Turin, Italy using cues from the original 1966 model. Assembly of the new model is done in Hiroshima, Japan where major sources of parts content are 75% Japanese and 20% Italian.
The curb appeal of our Bianco Peria Tri-Coat White Roadster reflected low-slung side body panels flowing to the recessed headlights. The front styling included a hexagonal upper grill with the FIAT logo proudly displayed above. The hood showed two 'power domes' functional to accommodate larger engines for the new model.
The rear profile has a V-shape contour as the rear body side panels taper inward toward the trunk and is further enhanced by the downward taper of the taillights. The rear license plate is mounted between the taillights with twin exhaust tips reflecting a performance capable motor. In addition the 17" premium Silver aluminum wheels add to the entire profile.
The interior of our Roadster, Saddle in color, featured heated leather seats which made quite a striking appearance in contrast to the White exterior and Black convertible top. The interior leather covered the instrument and door panels as well as the steering wheel and gear shift, reflecting quality Italian craftsmanship.
A well positioned three-gauge cluster display for the driver include an RPM display in the middle for performance driving.
Power for our Roadster is derived from a 1.4 liter MultiAir Turbo Engine pumping out 140 HP, the engines first application in a rear wheel drive vehicle. The engine was combined with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is rated at 25 city, 36 highway and 29 combined MPG.
We found driving the Spider in local traffic to be pleasurable, and the turbo performed flawlessly when it was needed, powering the vehicle to the desired speed quickly.
Comfort features included AM/FM Bluetooth Radio with 7" display and four speakers, air conditioning with automatic temperature, and remote keyless entry.
Being an 'open' Roadster, safety was a major factor in the development of the new model. Standard features include dual-stage front air bags for the driver and front passenger, supplemental front seat side air bags and active head restraints. Also rear back-up camera, rain sensitive windshield wipers, electronic stability control, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes and tire pressure warning light are included.
Our vehicle was equipped with the optional customer preferred package that included blind spot and cross path detection as well as automatic dimming exterior and rear view mirrors.
The FIAT 124 Spider had a base price of $27,495; options and destination charges brought the final price to $31,930.
BOTTOM LINE: This classic Italian convertible is definitely worthy of a visit to your closest FIAT dealer, especially if you are interested in a 'top down' ride at the 'right price!

Ford Shelby Mustang GT350 and GT350R Driving Event
By Larry Rust
Recently I was invited to attend a driving event for the new Shelby GT350 and GT350R Mustangs at the Road America Track in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. The Ford Performance Group is putting on this hands on driving experience at specific road course tracks around the country to promote a faster, more nimble, re-engineered performance Mustang as Carroll Shelby had done in 1965 with the original Mustang GT350. These New Mustangs were completely re-engineered with power, braking and maneuverability in mind.
Three laps were driven first in the GT350R. With the 526 HP under the hood and the cool sound of the exhaust it was impressive to accelerate onto the course. Handling in the corners was impressive because of the MagneRide shocks suspension Breaking was not an issue with the large 15.5 in. cross-drilled rotors with six piston front Brembo calipers in the front and 14.9 in.cross-drilled rotors with Brembo four piston calipers in the rear.
The GT350 was the next vehicle to be driven. . The GT350 seemed to handle a little differently as I believe it did not have the MagneRide Suspension. it was also impressive in acceleration, braking, and cornering. Finally, two hot laps were driven with the Instructor behind the wheel and all I can say is "Wow, what a thrill".
The GT350's have under the hood a 5.2 liter aluminum block V8, naturally aspirated, with 526 HP and 429 ft./lbs. of torque using a flat plane crankshaft which gives a quicker throttle response. Coupled to this engine is a high strength dual-disc clutch and a lightweight 6 speed manual transmission. An automatic transmission is not available.
The exhaust has a custom dual mode that can be selected by the driver to have a nice quiet sound or a loud throaty growl.
There are five performance levels to choose from: Shelby GT350, Shelby GT350 with Track Package, Shelby GT350 with a Technology Package, Shelby GT350R and the Shelby GT350R with an Electronics package. The GT 350R is for the true track racer because all the following are deleted: rear seat, a/c, audio system, auxiliary gauges, floor mats, tire inflator and sealant kit, usb port and auxiliary audio jack. For racing, it has 19 in. carbon-fiber wheels, specially designed Michelin high performance tires, racing designed front splitter and a special Carbon-fiber rear wing. All five levels of the GT350 are street legal.
Base pricing is for the Shelby GTR350 is $47,795 MSRP and the Shelby GT350R is $61,295 MSRP.
The Ford Performance Engineers have really looked at every facet of this car and have developed a true high performance production car that Carroll Shelby would be proud of.

2015 Ford Mustang
2015 FORD MUSTANG
by Bob Kroupa
Ford 'rang the bell' once again with their all-new 2015 Mustang.
Our test drive was a real head turner with the new fast back body design. Adding to the curb appeal of this Mustang was the optional paint, Triple Yellow Tri-coat with Black 19' wheels. After parking for a quick Starbucks fix, I found two unrelated strangers admiring the Mustang. One asked permission to take a few photos!
No questions about it - this was a true Mustang with the retro tail lights and Mustang logo between the rear tail lights, on the front grill and on the steering wheel center. Of course, it had dual exhaust with the addition of a diffuser panel between the exhausts.
The cabin was all about the instrument panel. It was nicely appointed with the expected gauges including oil pressure and a turbo boost.
Also unique to the instrument panel was a row of rotary controls for heat and A/C. Directly below these was a row of bright silver toggle control and selection switches. A new feature for Mustang was the use of a toggle switch to select a steering selection: normal, sport or comfort. A nice touch! Also worthy of mention was the reduction in diameter of the steering wheel with a new telescoping feature.
Seating was comfortable for front passengers who could enjoy the standard heating and cooling features. Rear seating was great for youngsters but would be a 'push' for most adults due to limited leg room.
Now for the 'fun' aspect of the Mustang. Ours was powered by the optional EcoBoost turbo-charged four banger coupled with a manual six-speed gear box.
Our test drive offered an opportunity to put the Mustang through the paces by driving various conditions on local roads, interstate highways and a steep mountain road climb with many tight turns. The performance on local roads and the interstate was excellent with an abundance of power when required.
Our mountain trip really became the proving grounds. It was quickly evident the new independent rear suspension eliminated the old 'rock and roll' as we powered through the turns.
Our WOW! factor goes to the EcoBoost four bangers rated at 310HP. The dynamics of the engine really came alive when shifting into second and third gears with the power and torque reaching 62 MPH in second and 95 MPH in third.
The only downside to the EcoBoost engine is the fuel requirement to use 93 octane. The good news is this is not a problem with today's reducing fuel prices where 93 octane compares favorably to yesterday's 87 octane pricing. The mileage is respectable at 22 city/31 highway for a combined 26 MPG rating.
Safety features are always important during our test drives. We were quite comfortable knowing our Mustang had dual front and side air bags, driver knee bag, 4-wheel ABS, traction and stability control, all as standard.
Our EcoBoost Mustang had a base price of $25,995.
BOTTON LINE: The EcoBoost Turbo with the manual transmission is a practical and fun driver - at the right price.

2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat
2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat
By Jim Jackson
Dodge brand commemorates 100 years on the road with a spin that raises the family sedan to a new level for the popular Dodge Charger. Headlining the festivity is the 2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat. This irreverent muscle car builds a massive 707 horsepower from a supercharged 6.2-liter HEMI Hellcat V8 engine to become the fastest, quickest and most powerful factory 4-door passenger car on the planet, priced at $63,995.
Although the 2015 Dodge Charger SRT Hellcat is clearly built for the hardcore driving enthusiast, public consumption of the redesigned Charger will come with the SE and SXT models. Charger SE, priced at $27,995, is outfitted with a peppy 3.6L V6 engine that delivers 292 hp and 19 miles per gallon in town and 31 mpg on the highway. The Dodge Charger SXT model at $29,995 offers a Rallye Group that duplicates 31 mpg from a 300 hp 3.6L with use of a cold-air induction system, sport-tuned exhaust and special engine calibration.
Charger V6 models are available with all-wheel drive (AWD) that engages in cold weather when traction slip is detected or when windshield wipers are on in rain or snow conditions. An 8-speed automatic transmission governs all 2015 Dodge Charger power trains and aids AWD models to yield 18 mpg/city and 27 mpg/highway. Charger buyers loyal to higher engine displacement garner 16 mpg/city and 25 mpg/highway with Charger R/T’s 5.7L HEMI V8 that generates 370 hp. and a base price of $32,995 A 2015 Charger R/T Scat Pack and SRT 392 model ups the anti further with a 6.4L HEMI V8 that cranks 485 hp to muster 15/25 mpg respectively.
The 2015 Dodge SRT 392 starts at $47,385. The all-new Charger R/T Scat Pack rolls out next year for a cost of $39,995.
CHARGER FACELIFT
Some Dodge purists are at the curb over Charger’s styling change for 2015. Nearly all aspects of the exterior sheet metal have been redesigned. Only the roof and rear doors are carried over from the previous model. Front end styling is changed dramatically with a taut pulled-back look. A side scalloped profile leads to an updated version of Charger’s “racetrack” LED tail lamps that emphasizes its wide ground-hugging stance.
Inside, Dodge Charger comes belted for five occupants with comfortable rear seat space for two adults or a pair of child car seats. A new instrument panel center stack with next-generation radio and 5.0- or 3-D 8.4-inch touchscreen display fronts the driver and forward passenger. An available voice-activated navigation system is the best in the business and is easily operated hands-free without distraction.
Ride quality is excellent with no creep of wind noise or vibration filtering into the cabin. Soft touch surfaces abound as does exceptional fit and finish.
Large, rear-drive 4-door sedans carry today’s families across America. With the 2015 Dodge Charger, buyers now have a choice of how economical or how fast they want to get there.

2015 Dodge Challenger Hellcat
By Jim Jackson
Those who missed the first Muscle Car Era from the 1960s are in luck - history is repeating itself. Leading the Detroit-built muscle machine phenomenon is Chrysler Group’s 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat with 707 horsepower sold and delivered straight off the showroom floor.
The 2015 Dodge Challenger SRT Hellcat is the most powerful factory muscle car ever built powered by an all-new supercharged 6.2-liter Hemi Hellcat V8 engine that produces unprecedented horsepower and 650 lb-ft of ground-pounding torque. Aiding the monster power plant is choice of TorqueFlite 8-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters or standard 6-speed manual gearbox. Challenger Hellcat also comes with two special ignition keys to regulate the power. Use of a black key fob awakens the engine to 500 hp., while a red fob frees all 707 horses for a pinned-in-the-seat thrill ride few production cars can match.
LINEUP SHAKEDOWN
Inside and out, the late model Dodge Challenger reflects styling cues inspired by the 1971 Challenger, bringing SXT, R/T, Scat Pack, SRT 392 and SRT Hellcat models into today’s market.
For 2015, three engines bow to Challenger’s SRT Hellcat hierarchy with a 3.6-liter V6 for 305 hp, a 5.7L HEMI V8 delivering 375 hp and 6.4L HEMI V8 that builds 485 hp. A throwback to Dodge muscle car legacy includes a raised “Shaker” hood scoop available on the 6.4L Scat Pack and SRT 392 models. A flat-black painted hood surface is also available.
I tested the 2015 Dodge Challenger Scat Pack and Hellcat models on road and track driving away impressed with their stable road manners over both pavement surfaces. Brake force is superb at any speed with controlled stopping power supplied by 15.4-inch Brembo rotors with six-piston calipers.
Off track, Scat Pack achieves 25 miles per gallon on the open road. Hellcat reels 20 mpg under prudent throttle. Dodge says the V6 infused Challenger SXT garners 30 mpg highway with the V8 R/T rated at 25 mpg.
Cabin accommodations greet four adults with a driver–focused center console and retro gauge cluster. Seventies-style houndstooth cloth upholstery is available on select models. Challenger’s rear quarters reign supreme in the segment for best knee, hip and legroom. I did find a rub with the front bucket-seat bolsters, however. Though their snug fit is idea for track use, I find them too confining for long haul distances.
Cost for the 2015 Dodge Challenger and Challenger SRT models travel a price range from $26,995 to $59,995 before freight.
