luxury cars 2018 Volvo S90 T6 Inscription AWD

“Volvo S90 stretches concept design” Volvo adds more class to its dazzling S90 flagship sedan with extended cabin space for 2018. S90’s styling is a direct knock-off of Volvo’s ‘Concept Coupe’ show car.
This year, the four-door five-passenger 2018 Volvo S90 Momentum T5 and Inscription T6 models come standard with a 4.5 inch longer wheelbase for NBA-size back seat head, knee and legroom. The S90 Momentum T5 has front-wheel drive and a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 250 horsepower priced at $48,100 without freight.
Volvo S90 Inscription T6 with standard all-wheel drive starts at $54,100 and builds 316-hp from a supercharged 2.0L turbo power plant. New for 2018 is a S90 Twin Engine Plug-In Hybrid T8 model that generates 400-hp and a cost of $63,650.
I tested the 2018 S90 Inscription with aft cabin quarters that feature standard second row power operated rear/side window shades and switches that open/close a provided panoramic moonroof with power sunscreen.
A rear toggle control moves the front passenger seat fully forward for 45-inches of back seat legroom. Independent rear climate control is standard.
Surprisingly, heated rear seats are not included, and should be with a cabin carrying this swagger.
Inscription’s cabin is stunning, bathed in linear Scandinavian design accented with walnut wood inlays and satin aluminum trim set against standard Nappa leather upholstery. Up front, multiple driver-seat positions, including bottom seat-cushion extension and side bolster adjustments, fit today’s American-sized driver. Inscription’s standard heated/ventilated front seats and available heated steering wheel deliver year-round comfort for the daily commute.
Volvo S90’s vertically oriented 9-inch center dash screen eliminates all but the hazard light switch, stereo volume dial and window defroster buttons from sight by burying all other operations in the touch screen. The system mimics smartphone-style scroll, tap and swiping motions to navigate through desired tasks. Display screen graphics and rear vision camera clarity is superb. However, accessing the interface function and operation is a big distraction when done manually while driving.
Voice activated specific commands initiated with a button on the steering wheel greatly eases the procedure without taking eyes off the road. Volvo’s Pilot Assist is standard and delivers relaxed semi-autonomous driving up to 80 miles per hour. The system fully controls the car’s acceleration, braking and steering on well marked roads when the driver’s hand is restfully placed anywhere on the wheel.
2018 Genesis G80 Sport AWD

Genesis continues to evolve into the luxury sedan market as the stand alone Premium Vehicle Brand for Korean automaker, Hyundai.
First introduced in 2008, Genesis rolls into its second generation with the introduction of the G80 and G90 sedans to initiate Hyundai’s newly conceived Genesis luxury-brand division. For 2018, Genesis G80 adds a Sport model with a twin-turbocharged V-6 engine, radical design and other appearance enhancements that give this G80 a “bad boy” demeanor.
I tested the 2018 Genesis G80 Sport with all-wheel drive through suburban Chicago and across our region.
A new 3.3-liter V-6 delivers 365 horsepower to find the sweet spot between G80’s carry-over 3.8L V-6 with 311-hp and 5.0L V-8 that generates 420-hp.
Genesis G80 Sport creates a nice balance with its horsepower, AWD and 8-speed automatic transmission for exceptional day-to-day driving pleasure punctuated by occasional accelerator exercise on the Interstate.
G80 Sport has an Intelligent Drive Mode that adapts the suspension to various comfort and performance postures.
For the purpose of review, I placed the G80 into ‘Sport’ mode that alters the throttle response, shift points, steering feel and exhaust note.
Acceleration is exceptional off the line and when passing with power that quickly reaches the speed limit. Using a prudent throttle and ‘ECO’ mode delivers 24 miles per gallon on the highway and 17-mpg around town.
G80 Sport’s road manners are very compliant offering a smooth ride quality, all-wheel grip and good road surface absorption to soothe the daily commute for driver and three adult passengers. The rear seat comes belted for three riders. Genesis G80’s interior space is roomy and nicely appointed with soft touch materials that surround the cabin. Fit and finish is superb. So is the leg and headroom front to back.
Seats are nicely cushioned and attractively set in contrasting two-tone leather upholstery. However, they lack sufficient side bolster support for spirited driving.
G80 Sport comes complete from the factory with a laundry list of provided safety, comfort and technology features priced at $58,725 including freight.
The 2018 Genesis G80 Sport is built in Ulsan, Korea, and carries an overall 5-Star Safety Rating for crash protection by the U.S. Government.-

2017 LINCOLN CONTINENTAL - RETURN OF THE FLAGSHIP
by Bob Kroupa
by Bob Kroupa
We have been waiting for an 'uptown' vehicle and our wait was finally over when we were informed a 2017 Lincoln Continental was headed our way.
When the 2017 AWD Lincoln Continental Black Label Edition arrived we knew this vehicle was well worth the wait. It was decked out in the optional Chrome Caviar Dark Gray Metallic exterior paint with a Jet Black Venetian Leather interior. Needless to say we were quite impressed with its elegant 'curb appeal'.
Adding to the visual appearance was the new distinctive chrome mesh grill flanked on both upper sides by five dynamic adaptive HID headlights that swivel with the turning of the steering wheel. The E-latch exterior handles are integrated within the lower chrome surround of the side windows that unlatch with a simple touch allowing the door to open in one single motion. This concept provides a clean beltline profile. The Black Label Edition continues with 20" polished aluminum wheels - WOW!
Also noted were the unique side view mirrors that automatically fold when the vehicle placed in park and open to their normal position when the vehicle is started - a nice touch!
As we approached the Lincoln we were greeted by a Black Label logo, an exterior welcome mat, so to speak, as an illuminated ground display lighted up below each of the front doors. Entering the cabin we were treated to a luxurious interior for driver and passengers. One of the many interior highlights was Lincoln's front Perfect Position Seats that can be adjusted up to 30 ways for optimum individual comfort including heating and cooling settings. To impress us further we found the very posh massage function which we enjoyed greatly.
From a complete functionality perspective the Lincoln provides their Sync 3 infotainment system including Navigation with Sirius XM Travel and Traffic links controlled by voice commands or taps on the 8" touch screen. Steering wheel-mounted controls allow the driver to place and answer calls as well as control music from different devices. Continental occupants are treated to a dynamic Revel Ultimate audio system with 19 speakers. Another function very much to our liking was the Heads up Display with custom selections like MPH, time, temperature and road speed limits.
The rear passengers also received first class treatment with their fold down console that provided an abundance of power controls including lumbar support, heated and ventilated seats, reclining seats, message capability and inflatable seat belts from a safety perspective. Exiting the vehicle was via a simple push button operation.
The AWD Lincoln was powered by a 3.0 liter GTDI twin-turbo V6 engine pumping out 400HP and 400 lbs. of torque. This engine is coupled with a 6-speed automatic transmission with push button selection for the driver. Fuel economy is rated at 16 city/24 highway MPG.
We are not accustomed to driving 400 HP full-size sedans which made this test drive very interesting. Our normal route is entering the posted 70 MPH Interstate. Much to our surprise the Lincoln begs to be driven and we found the acceleration quite ready, reaching 70 MPH in a mere flash. The 0-60 MPH has been reported at 5.5 seconds. When we passed slower moving vehicles, the Lincoln was absolutely up to the test again.
On the winding country roads aspect of our test drive, the Lincoln continued to handle flawlessly in the Sport Mode, adapting steering and suspension setups to handle the existing terrain. Lincoln's torque vectoring system with all-wheel drive distributes power to the appropriate wheels on the sharp curves providing confident handling and stability. Back on the Interstate the drive mode was set to 'comfort' for a pleasing, soft comfortable ride back to the city.
Back in the city, Lincoln's first class technology was activated in parallel and perpendicular parking using the Active Park Assist that will automatically steer your vehicle into a parking space. A 360-degree camera system allows the driver to see around the vehicle when in reverse. Well done!
From a safety perspective our Lincoln was equipped with the latest air bags including driver/passenger knee air bags, front seat side air bags and side curtain air bags. In addition Blind-Spot information with Cross Traffic Alert, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Keeping System and Pre-Collision with Pedestrian Detection and Active Breaking were all included in our Lincoln test drive vehicle.
The base price of our 2017 AWD Black Label Lincoln Continental was $65,075; options and delivery brought the total price to $78,920.
BOTTOM LINE: This luxury sedan test drive vehicle was quite the experience and is definitely worthy of a visit to your closest Lincoln dealership to experience the many features available and an overview of the Black Label Program.

2017 Lexus GS 350 - Modern Classic Luxury
by Bob Kroupa
by Bob Kroupa
We had the pleasure of test-driving the 2017 GS 350, the new luxury sedan from the Lexus stable. This beauty was designed to accomodate the driver and passengers with luxury features to enhance their riding pleasure.
Upon delivery of the vehicle we immediately noted the elegant curb appeal of the GS with its neat design lines and aggressive profile. The Lexus signature spindle grill with lower side sculptures and the bold 'L' mounted top center set the stage that this vehicle is uniquely LEXUS. The subtle sculptures in the side panels and wheel flares add to the overall design of the GS: all quite classy, we might add.
The new interior paint color options are another new and ultra contemporary aspect of the GS. Called MICA, these color options use an extraordinarily complex layered metallic created through a twice baked process previously used only for concept vehicles or custom cars. The depth of the paint is truly outstanding.
The cabin design with its trim selection of Matte Walnut or Straited Black set the stage for interesting new interior leather colors that include Chateau and Noble Brown. Front seating includes 10-way power seats for both driver and passenger and includes other options for custom selections for both seats. The driver position is enhanced with power tilt and telescopic steering column with automatic tilt-away in Park. The Lexus 12-speaker, 5.1 surround system adds a nice touch to the entertainment factor. A 12.3" navigation screen is quite impressive, and the color heads-up display was one of our favorite features.
The driver has a 3-phase drive selection on the center console that includes: ECO - low fuel consumption; Sports - precise handling required; and, Sports+ - helps ensure steering performance and driving stability suspension. Also included on the center console is a side button for a Snow Mode.
The backseat passengers are treated to power side door shades and an arm console module that contains heated seat controls and heat/AC controls as well.
The GS is powered by a muscular 3.5 liter, V6 engine pumping out 311 horsepower combined with an 8-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel mounted paddle shifters. The 0-60 MPH is respectable at 5.7 seconds with a top speed that approached 140 MPH (these are manufacturer results - not gained from personal experience!) Fuel economy is 20-28-23 MPG (city/highway/combined).
Our normal test-drive is all encompassing and includes driving on the Interstate, rural roads, a steep mountain climb as well as the usual city traffic and parking conditions. We were delighted with the test-drive and quite satisfied in all respects. The GS V-6 provided ample power entering the interstate as well as passing vehicles when necessary.
Our Interstate has a 70 MPH limit. After exiting the Interstate our normal route took us to the Blue Ridge Parkway via a steep and twisting mountain road. The GS was placed in the Sports+ mode and handled the turns with ease with no concerns. Back in the city, the drive ride was as quiet and smooth as expected.
The GS had the Lexus Safety System that was introduced in 2016 as an option, however in the 2017 model it has become a standard feature. The system includes Pre-Collision Alert, Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist, Intelligent High Beams and Full Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control. The 2017 GS also includes Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross Traffic Alert. In addition, the GS is equipped with 10 standard air bags for occupant protection.
The base price of our GS 350 4-Door Sedan was $50,695. Optional packages and delivery brought the bottom line to $60,700.
Our BOTTOM LINE: This new Lexus luxury sedan is a very nice ride!

2017 G80 RWD 5.0 HYUNDAI ULTIMATE
'Luxury Abounds' by Bob Kroupa
First a bit of background information: Hyundai has enhanced their product line with the rebranding of two of their popular sedans in the luxury vehicle segment. Both these luxury vehicles will be branded under the nameplate of Genesis. Currently two models are available; the G80, formerly called the Genesis; and, the G90, formerly called the Equus.
We had the pleasure of test driving Hyundai's luxury 4-door sedan, the G80.
Normally we don't begin a review with vehicle pricing, however to set the stage for the rest of this review you need to know our test G80 has a base price of $54,550. Also included in the price for this luxury sedan was the destination charge of $950 and a cargo tray and mud guards at $215 for a bottom line total of $55,715. All of the attributes in this review were included as standard features in the bottom line. Hyundai has tagged this sedan - 'The Genesis Experience' and we say - 'Well Said!'
The curb appeal of the G80 sends a message of class and luxury with styling in the company of classic designs like Lexus, Mercedes Benz or Cadillac. And on a price comparison to these rivals, those luxury sedan brands will be priced at a considerably higher MSRP.
From an exterior view, the styling cues reflect a 'fast back' design, however the interior accommodates ample headroom for both the front and rear passengers. The side belt line design shows a body line running from the headlights across the door handle and ending at the wrap-around taillights, a nice touch. The side styling is complete with a lower raised chrome strip below the doors.
The front grill with horizontal bars encased in a chrome surround strip with the Genesis winged logo centered above - giving upfront identity to the Genesis brand. The rear profile also includes the Genesis logo above the license plate holder.
Taillights are unique with their extended profile extending to the rear of the G80's side panels. Backup lights are incorporated into the bottom of the taillights. Finishing off the rear profile are twin dual chrome exhaust tips on each side of the G80, classy.
Upon opening one of the entry doors it is apparent the Genesis interior defines luxury and elegance. Genuine matt finish wood trim and aluminum trim are classical appointments along with premium leather seating that combine both heated and ventilated front seats as well as 16-way power seats for the driver and 12-way seats for the front passenger.
We found the 7" LCD multi-information dash display to be convenient along with our favorite feature, the heads-up display. Add the premium 9.2" touch screen and DIS Navigation system and we were more than ready for our trip to the North Carolina mountains.
To make the trip even more enjoyable we really appreciated the AM/FM HD Radio, CD/MPS Lexicon 17 Speaker Audio system for our listening enjoyment along with Sirius XM Radio and Bluetooth hands-free phone system with audio streaming - WOW!
Our special ride was powered by the Genesis 5.0 liter DOHC V8 motor pumping out 420 HP matched to the 8-speed smooth shifting automatic transmission with Shiftronics and paddle shifters. This combination provided ample power entering the NC Interstate highways. Fuel economy was rated at 15 city, 23 highway for a combination of 18 MPG.
Safety, an important factor for the G80, is rated at the top Five Star US Government Safety Rating for frontal crash, side crash and rollover. In addition, as standard equipment is the advanced safety technology that includes automatic emergency braking, blind spot detection with rear cross traffic alert, and lane keeping assist and lane departure warning. These features provide the driver with a sense of safety as the vehicle is moving out into traffic.
BOTTOM LINE: When you add the 3-year/36,000 mile complimentary schedule maintenance with valet services and enhanced roadside assistance; 5-year/60,000 mile new vehicle warranty; and, 10-year/100,000 mile power-train warranty to this elegant newly rebranded sedan from Hyundai, the consumer will have years of luxury driving with complimentary services at no charge. Quite a package!

2015 Lexus ES350
by Bob Kroupa
Our test drive of the ES350 four-door sedan left us with many 'YES' factors for a mid-size sedan. It all started with the Lexus nameplate because Lexus is noted world-wide for their upscale product portfolio.
This model's fast-back styling, clean side appearance, new two-piece grill design with the traditional and always stylish 'L' logo, 18" wheels, and the new Atomic Silver paint on our test vehicle adds up to the stunning curb appeal of this luxury sedan.
The inviting interior signals this is a 'high end' vehicle with its new dash layout, elegant comfort seating (both front and rear) with ample leg room for all passengers. As expected, the front seats have heat and cool controls. In addition, both driver and passenger seats have 10-way power controls including lumbar controls. Rear passengers have a center heat/cool vent, however a fan control would have been a welcomed addition.
The ES350 is powered by a 3.5 liter V-6 motor rated at 268 horsepower. The engine is paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. The V-6 provides ample power for city and highway driving. The ES350 will accelerate from 0-60 MPH with a respectable time of 7.1 seconds. From a fuel economy perspective, highway driving provides 31 MPG while city driving is 21 MPG for an overall rating of 24 MPG.
For additional driving enjoyment, the driver can select from one of three driving modes. ECO adjusts engine response and climate-control settings to help maximize fuel economy. SPORT mode tunes throttle and transmission response for a more aggressive driving experience. NORMAL mode is designed to provide an ideal balance of performance and efficiency.
Features are in abundance for this luxury sedan. Included are the following: Lexus Premium Audio System with Automatic Sound Level, eight speakers, MPS Player Connectivity, Bluetooth Technology, UBS Audio Plug and Sirius XM Satellite Radio. Driver convenience includes Smart Access with Push Button Start/Stop. Optional convenience features include a Luxury Package and Hard Disc Drive Navigation System.
