2020 FORD RANGER LARIAT SUPERCREW 4X4
By Bob Kroupa
Today's consumers dictate the status of the automotive industry by their vehicle purchases. Consumer choices of vehicles have changed in recent years with SUV's and Trucks leading their sold units.
We have reviewed several SUVs recently and posted our findings on this blog. Having followed Ford Motor Company for years we knew that Ford has shifted gears in keeping with these popular sales trends - and we had the pleasure to have their 2020 Ford Ranger Lariat Supercrew 4x4 midsize PU truck for this review. The Ranger was introduced in 1983 as a Ford compact truck. In 2018, Ford returned the Ranger to the market as a 4th generation mid-size PU truck after an eight year hiatus.
This Ranger's arrival literally shouted out "I'm HERE!" with its bright Race Red exterior and Medium Stone Leather seats. We were impressed on our 'walk around' with its Black Appearance package that included the front grill (centered with the Ford blue oval, of course), power heated and folding side view mirrors, front bash plate, retractable running boards, a 5' spray-in bedliner and 18" painted aluminum wheels with all-terrain tires. All were dressed in Black, contrasted nicely with the Race Red paint, and added to the curb appeal of the Ranger.
Opening the front cabin door (full size front and back), we were greeted with dual bucket heated leather seats with 8-way power controls and lumbar support. A SYNC3 System interacts with a variety of features using both touchscreen and voice commands for Navigation, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bang & Olufsen Sound System with 10 speakers, and Sirius Radio. FordPassConnect provides 4G LTE Wi-Fi.
The center console has several system controls including Four Wheel Drive, Trail Control (controls acceleration and braking during low speed + off-road use), Electronic Locking Differential, Traction Control, Terrain Management System (drive mode selection of Normal, Grass/Gravel/Snow, Mud/Ruts, and Sand).
Other cabin features include dual zone climate control, a 110 volt outlet, tailgate lock, ambient lighting, special owner's manual shelf in large glove box, lift-up rear seats, and rear window defroster.
Our Ranger was powered by a 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine rated at 270 HP and 310 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine has the gas saving technology of Auto Start-Stop with an 'off' button on the center console. The engine is paired to an efficient 10-speed automatic transmission. Towing is rated at 7,500 pounds and maximum payload is 1,860 pounds.
This Ranger was upgraded with the FX4 Road Package, adding to the versatility of the truck. The package tunes the Ranger for off-road duty with special shocks and under carriage protection. Included in the package is Terrain Management and Trail Control technology.
From a safety perspective the Ranger has the usual front, side and overhead airbags for the front and rear passengers. The front cabin shoulder belts have a height adjustment feature. Also included are the pre-collision assist with automatic emergency braking, lane keep system, blind spot information system, adaptive cruise control and rearview camera.
Our test drive started on an Interstate with a posted speed limit of 70 MPH. Accelerating off the interstate ramp, the Ranger's 270 HP EcoBoost motor reacted favorably as it was 'pedal to the metal' to reach the 70 MPH limit without any merging issues. Our navigation system directed us to a few rural gavel roads that the Ranger handled with ease, leaving us with a comfort feeling. Back to city driving, we found the Ranger to be a bigger vehicle that we had realized and required careful parking.
The EPA/DOT economy was rated at 20/24/22 MPG city/highway/combined.
The base price of our Race Red Ranger Supercrew 4x4 was $38,675. Adding the Equipment Group 501A, several option packages and destination & delivery brought full price to $45,915.
BOTTOM LINE: The 2020 Ranger is a versatile truck built for off-road capability and/or daily use with hauling and towing features - this may be your vehicle to consider!

2019 FORD F-150 4x2 SUPERCREW LIMITED SERIES TRUCK
By Bob Kroupa
WOW! Our 2019 Ford F-150 just arrived with its gleaming exterior in Ingot Silver Paint that complimented a Camelback Tutone Lux Leather interior. This is the new definition of a classy truck!
Adding to this initial view of 'curb appeal' were the 22" polished aluminum wheels; twin panel moonroof; stunning and unique front door styling that accommodates the use of the oversized and folding side view mirror with a spotlight feature; and, the massive satin finished grill neatly flanked with quad-beam LED headlamps.
Just to show the average onlooker that this was NOT your average F-150, the bold lettering LIMITED was right there on the front of the hood and the rear tailgate - you can't miss Ford's pride in the production of their new truck. Finishing off the rear bed were dual exhaust pipes, a bed liner and LED bed lights including the tail-lamps. I had to go around this truck several times to take it all in.
When we opened the doors of the new F-150 a retractable running board dropped into place giving one a convenient step for entering and exiting the cab. Inside, we were treated to a spacious cabin complete with an abundance of storage including side door panel pockets, a center console that will accommodate a lap-top and an oversized glove box with a shelf. This could definitely operate as an on-the-go office.
The luxurious front seats were heated and ventilated with a massage feature. The leather wrapped steering wheel was also heated. Another Ford feature was the adjustable pedals with memory as well as power tilt and telescopic steering column. Smart genuine wood accents and ambient lighting were just the right accents for this upgraded F-150 version.
On the dash we found an 8" LCD productivity screen located between the RPM and Speedometer with trip/fuel, truck information, towing and off-road selections. Included is Ford's SYNC3 infotainment 8" touch screen system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Ford Pass Connect-Wi-Fi, hot spot connect access, voice activated Navigation and Banq & Olusen Audio with AM/FM/Sirius XM Radio.
The rear of the cabin is quite spacious, ample room for three adult passengers, heated seats, 60/40 combination with storage below the seats as well as a 110V/400W outlet. From an interior hauling cargo perspective, the seats fold upward leaving a huge space on the flat back seat floor. A power sliding rear window was also noted.
Before starting on our test ride and drive we found it appropriate to identify the Safety features of our F-150. Included were the usual array of airbags with the rear seat and seat belts having an inflatable feature, SOS Post Crash alert system, lane-keeping system, adaptive cruise control with stop and go feature, and a 360 degree back-up camera with split view display (input from four cameras). Active Park Assist feature was included for parallel parking as well as the all important Blind Spot Information System (BLIS).
Hauling/towing specifics are a towing rating at 13,200 lbs., remote tailgate release, bed side steps, Pro Trailer Back-Up Assist and Advance Trac w/Roll Stability Control (RSC).
We knew this was going to be quite the ride when we started up this very special F-150 with the ROAR of the 3.5L EcoBoost engine rated at 450 HP and 510 lb.-ft. torque with twin intercooled turbos for on-demand power with virtually no lag. This engine is coupled with an electronic 10-speed transmission with Tow/Haul, Snow/Wet, ECO select and Sport modes. The good news was we live near an Interstate with a posted 70 MPH speed limit.
The entrance to the Interstate is at a remote location and I was able to stop my F-150, dropping it into the Sport mode and hammered the accelerator. After the brief rip from the tires we rapidly approached the 70 MPH limit in under 6 seconds! WOW! WE LOVE THIS TRUCK!
Along the route a few motorists noted our special vehicle and rightfully gave us the 'thumbs-up' sign! Our ride was quite comfortable with all of the interior features, after all what's not to like. Passing some slower vehicles gave us the opportunity to put the twin turbos to work, so we took it.
From a fuel economy perspective the Ford F-150 is rated at 17/19/22 MPG, city/combined/highway.
The base price of our luxury Ford F-150 Supercrew Limited Series was $67,135. A few options were billable: bed liner, trailer tow package and tailgate folding step. Add the destination and delivery charges and we were at $70,755.
BOTTOM LINE: This is NOT a work truck, but a real luxury vehicle that can double up as a family towing vehicle for the best of all worlds. It is definitely worthy of a trip to your local Ford Dealer.

2019 Ram 1500 Longhorn Crew Cab 4 X 4
By Larry Rust
A luxury pickup with a powerful looking stance is the 2019 Ram 1500 Longhorn. All-new for 2019, the Longhorn has the look of strength for the workplace and luxury for a day at the finest of country clubs.
Under the hood is a 5.7 Liter Hemi VVT engine developing 395 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque coupled with an eight speed automatic transmission. The expected fuel mileage is 15 mpg city and 22 mpg highway.
Engineering changes below the body include a stronger and slightly lighter frame. A new front suspension has changes made to upper control arms and lower arms. Rear multi-link coil springs are used instead of leaf springs as offered in their closest competitors. New Frequency Damping Shocks have been added. These shocks automatically adjust the damping force through valves receiving input from the wheel. A four corner air suspension option at $1795 can be added which can change the range of ground clearance from 8.1 inches to 10.1 inches. The truck, which was test driven, had this option and it provided a very comfortable ride. When properly equipped the towing capacity of the Longhorn is 12,700 lbs.
Inside, the cabin is very impressive. Ram claims that it has the most spacious cabin in the segment. It definitely felt that way. The seats are black leather with saddle brown inserts. Real wood trim is used throughout the interior adding to the upscale feel. The vehicle is equipped with the Level 1 Equipment Group. This includes a nice 12" touch screen display in the center stack. Other features include a 19-speaker Harmon Kardon Radio System, Blind-Spot with Cross-Path and Trailer Detection, power running boards, ventilated rear seats and wireless phone charging system. Standard features include AppleCar Play and Android CarPlay capability, a 7" TFT color instrument display, a wood/leather wrapped heated steering wheel, two USB ports, a 115v outlet, dual zone auto A/C front controls, 8-way power seats driver and passenger side and power adjustable pedals with memory, rain sensitive windshield wipers and tire pressure warnings. Adding to the luxury is an optional $1295 dual-pane panoramic sun roof.
Safety features include front seat air bags, front seat side air bags, side air bag curtains on front and rear seats, front and rear braking assist with stop and a rear backup camera. An optional advanced safety package can be added which includes adaptive cruise control, advanced brake assist, forward collision warning, lane departure warning, parallel and perpendicular park assist and a surround view camera system.
For towing, the Longhorn comes standard with a class IV trailer hitch, a 3.21 rear axle ratio and a 7 pin wiring harness. This vehicle can be upgraded with an Off-Road Grouping which includes skid plates for the steering column, fuel tank, front suspension and transfer case. Also included in this group are all-terrain tires, hill descent control, a full size spare and extra heavy duty shocks.
Behind the cab, the truck comes with a standard sprayed-in bed liner and a remote tailgate release. An optional tri-fold Tonneau Cover and four adjustable cargo tie down hooks can be added.
The base price of the Longhorn is $53,695 MSRP. The extras brought the test-driven vehicle up to a grand total of $66,935 MSRP. Overall, this truck is very impressive in the ride, power, and its great looks. I would probably cringe if I had to use this truck as a material hauling work vehicle. Then again, I would surely be hauling in style.

2019 Ram 1500 Truck
By Jim Jackson
Ram trucks helped build America. This month, the storied brand hauls its 15th Generation to work with the arrival of the 2019 Ram 1500 light duty pickup.
The 2019 Ram 1500 is a direct descendent of the 1994 Dodge Ram 1500 pickup that touted “Big Rig” looks - setting its unique front end styling apart from other Detroit-built trucks in its class.
Today, Ram is its own brand within Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA), bringing to market fresh aerodynamic styling, greater passenger room with increased towing capacity and payload.
The 2019 Ram stays true to form with rear-wheel drive Quad Cab models fixed to a six-foot, four-inch bed and Crew Cab versions coupled with either a 5’7” or 6’4” box. Both cabs seat six adult passengers. For 2019, Ram Crew Cab models benefit from a four-inch longer cabin boasting over 45 inches of rear seat legroom.
Ram Tradesman, Bighorn, Laramie, Rebel, Longhorn and Limited models are currently governed by a 395 horsepower 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 engine and 8-speed automatic transmission with available part- or full-time four-wheel drive.
An eTorque mild hybrid system will be standard on Tradesman, Bighorn and Rebel later this year coupled to the brand’s second-gen 3.6L V-6 priced to start at $33,390 with freight.
Ram’s rear coil-spring suspension dominates over competitors’ traditional leaf spring assembly to provide an extraordinary smooth ride. An air suspension adds the ability to raise Ram’s ground clearance up to 11.7-in with available Off-Road Package. And depending on the configuration and powertrain setup, the 2019 Ram provides a maximum 2300 pounds of cargo and 12,750 lbs of towing capacity.
A damped tailgate, taller bed height with available deployable side step and 4.5-in chrome exhaust tips round out the rear end.
Up front, each trim level carries distinctive front end styling with Ram’s long-standing crosshair grille replaced by a bold chrome “R-A-M” moniker.
The 2019 Ram is the first vehicle within FCA to utilize a 12-inch fully configurable touchscreen that includes tailored graphics for various models in the Ram product line.
Equally unique is Ram’s approach to interior storage solutions with nearly 100-percent more bins, pockets, slots and cubbies to stash gear than the competition while Ram’s available RamBox sets the standard for lockable cargo box storage.

2017 RAM 1500 HEMI - "GUTS & GLORY"!
By Bob Kroupa
By Bob Kroupa
The Ram Team scheduled one of their 'big boys', a RAM 1500 Hemi for a trial run and we were delighted to be selected for this adventure. To be more appropriate with the additional official nomenclature, this was the 1500 Sport Crew Cab 4x2, and it was BIG!
Sales results for 2016 show the RAM nameplate sold 545,851 units compared to 491,170 units in 2015, a solid uptick in sales. This just shows what a following the RAM has across the USA.
When our Bright White Clear Coat RAM 1500 Hemi pulled up on the driveway we were immediately taken with the Night Edition option package that included a Black honeycomb grill, Black Ram tailgate name plate, Black 20" aluminum wheels and Black RAM 1500 badge. The curb appeal was immediate with this custom look, factory installed we might add. This look was definitely worth the $395 option cost.
The huge bed of the truck was quite functional and ready for duty with its RAM Box Cargo Management System including four adjustable cargo tie-down hooks, a cargo bed divider/extender and LED lighting, two lighted lockable storage bins over the rear inside wheels with exterior side access and remote locking capability that included the tail gate. Also noted was the factory sprayed bed-liner that gave this 'big boy' a crisp and finished look.
An interior windshield pillar handle aided when entering the raised cabin, raised partially due to the impressive 20" wheels. Immediately we noted in our test review the abundance of cabin storage compartments that included dual glove boxes, large door panel spaces, center console side spaces, top of the dash center space and more storage space below the air vents and dual compartments between the front seats. In addition we found twelve cup holders combined in both front and second row seats. If all these storage areas do not meet your needs, you are in trouble and clearly have too much stuff!
The dual front bucket seats provided comfortable seating and the oversized center console with padded arm rests added just the right touch. The dash was simply displayed with its many features including dual controlled climate controls, heated steering wheel, digital speedometer, premium gauge cluster, 8.4" touchscreen U-Connect infortainment system, Bluetooth, Navigation, UBS and 12-volt ports with 115 volt-150 watt outlet in the center stack. From an audio perspective our RAM had an Alpine Premium Audio system with nine speakers and subwoofer.
The rear 60/40 bench folding seats provided comfortable seating with ample leg room for three adults. Included are in-floor storage bins and folding flat load floor storage when additional in-cabin hauling is required. Well done, design team!
Now to the real WOW! factor - tucked under the performance hood was the 5.7 liter Hemi V8 pumping out 395 HP with torque rated 410@ 3,950 RPM. Being a 'noise' guy, the rumble of the V8 was music to our ears! Coupled with the V8 was the RAM's 8-speed automatic transmission controlled by a bright rotary shifter dial on the upper center console. It took a bit of getting used to, however, after a few trips it became second nature to reach for the dial knob.
The RAM has a towing capacity of 10,640 lbs. and a pay load of 1,800 lbs. Our test RAM was also equipped with the optional trailer brake control. Our test drive in the city and on the Interstate was a real pleasure. The ride was comfortable, almost car-like, and the cabin noise was at a minimum. In town parking was simple with the back-up camera and rear and front parking sensors. Entering the Interstate was another easy test for the Hemi as we accelerated to the posted 70 MPH speed with ease.
Our Ram's fuel economy was rated at 15/22/17 in city/highway/average driving. We didn't have any fuel stops on this test drive with our optional 32 gallon fuel tank (the standard RAM fuel tank is 26 gallons).
From a safety perspective, the RAM had advanced multistage front airbags and supplemental side-curtain front and rear airbags. Automatic high beam headlamp controls and rain sensitive windshield wipers were included in the Convenience Group option.
The RAM has a 5 year/60,000 mile powertrain limited warranty and a 3 year/36,000 mile basic limited warranty.
Our test drive RAM had a base price of $40,395 with options pricing and destination charges bringing the final price to $50,245.
BOTTOM LINE: The RAM 1500 Hemi is a very functional vehicle well equipped to support business, trade or family traffic. This truck is definitely worthy of a trip to your RAM dealer for a test drive/purchase consideration.

Ford's Pro Trailer Backup Assist
by Larry Rust
Prior to the 2016 Chicago Auto Show Media Event, I had the opportunity to get hands-on experience with Ford's new feature of a trailer backup assist being offered in the new F-150 pickup trucks.
Backing a trailer down a boat ramp or into a parking space is not always an easy task. Through the use of the rear view cameras and the side mirrors, one can navigate parking a trailer with a control knob on the dash. With the transmission in reverse, turn the knob to the left and the trailer turns to the left. Turn it to the right and the trailer turns to the right. Steering wheel movement is controlled by the system. The driver controls the accelerator and the brakes but speed will be limited by the system.
This system makes the process easier; however, it does not make it fool proof. Since there are no sensors on the trailer to warn you when you are getting to close to an object, you have to rely on what you are seeing in the rearview mirrors and backup camera. It took two attempts for me to get the trailer between the test cones. With a little more practice I feel it would be almost second nature.
Having backed up many trailers in my driving career, using a rear backup camera and a backup assist such as this would have made trailering considerably easier.
Pricing is expected to be under $400.00.

2016 Nissan Titan XD
By Jim Jackson
Nissan fills white space in the truck segment with the arrival of the 2016 Titan XD.
The full-size Titan XD bows with a 5.0-liter V8 Cummins turbocharged diesel engine that builds 310 horsepower and 555 pound-feet of torque governed by a six-speed Aisin automatic transmission.
Nissan’s newcomer absorbs the existing gap between the Light Duty and Heavy Duty (HD) pickup truck market designated with an exclusive “XD” moniker.
The automaker estimates 150,000 buyers annually seek the middle-ground capability developed in the new Titan XD diesel. Nissan Titan XD diesel is shipped in S, SV, PRO-4X, SL and Platinum Reserve models with Single Cab, King Cab and Crew Cab body styles and rear- or four-wheel drive.
The Crew Cab box comes in 5.5-foot and 6.5-ft length. King Cab versions carry a 6.5-ft. bed while Single Cab models maximize an 8-ft long cargo floor.
Titan XD is the first non-HD truck to offer a factory-installed Gooseneck Hitch in the bed. Other cargo box features include an Utili-track system with moveable tie-down cleats, dry/lockable bed storage, under-rail box lamps and a dampened tailgate.
When properly equipped, Titan’s Cummins powertrain musters a maximum 2,091 pound payload and tops 12,314 lbs of towing capacity. Trailer hook-up with a rear-mount hitch is now a driver only operation with use of Nissan’s Around View Monitor system that eliminates the need for a spotter to align the trailer hitch. Guide lines on the cab’s center stack display help the operator align the hitch ball to the trailer hitch aided by audible tones that sound when the trailer tongue is over the ball. A Trailer Light Check system allows the driver to view turn signals and stop lamps from the outside rear of the trailer using only the key fob. On road, Downhill Speed Control automatically down-shifts the transmission on descending grades with provided anti-sway control monitoring the trailer’s posture.
Inside, the console-mounted shifter is moved to the column for increased console storage. A heated steering wheel and climate controlled front seats and heated rear seats comfort five occupants in the King Cab model. A remote start feature also pre-heats/cools the cabin.
Price for the rear drive Titan XD S model is expected to start around $40,000 followed by the Crew Cab PRO-4X (4X4) estimated at $50,000. Platinum Reserve Crew Cab 4X4 editions flirt with $60,000.
2016 Toyota Tacoma
“Tacoma rules midsize truck market”
By Jim Jackson
Most domestic automakers have shelved their midsize pickup truck product line. Staying the course is Japanese automaker Toyota with the third-generation Toyota Tacoma. Built in North America, Tacoma is Toyota’s top selling truck and America’s best-selling mid-size pickup 10 years running to hold a 50-percent market share in the segment.
The 2016 Toyota Tacoma comes in SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road and Limited models shipped with 4X2 or 4X4 drivetrains in Double or Access Cab body styles.
Base power is supplied by a 2.7-liter four-cylinder with standard five-speed manual transmission rated at 159 horsepower. A six-speed automatic is also available. A new 3.5L V6 replaces the retired 4.0L engine for 278 hp mated to a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission.
I tested Tacoma’s volume leading TRD Sport and TRD Off-Road models with V6 engine base priced at $30,765.
The Off-Road 4X4 version is the more rugged of the two TRD models with 9.4-inches of ground clearance, maximum 32-degree approach angle and Multi-terrain Select-plus Crawl Control for go-anywhere capability unmatched in its segment.
I put the TRD Off Road though its paces on one of the most rugged off-road courses I’ve experienced, conquering boulder fields and backwoods obstacles akin to the famed Rubicon Trail. When set in Crawl Mode, TRD Off-Road modulates the speed to selectively sense its traction need automatically with no throttle or brake intervention by the driver and only steering required when negotiating a 40-degree hill decent. Tacoma TRD Off-Road is also capable of effortlessly crawling out of deep sand - even when all wheels are buried to their axles.
A damped tailgate with standard rear-view camera and LED cargo lamps highlight Tacoma’s cargo box.
Inside, Tacoma receives a totally revised interior with standard 6.1-inch touchscreen audio system, voice recognition, Bluetooth hands-free system and industry-first GoPro windshield camera mount.
The 2016 Toyota Tacoma arrives at area dealers this week priced from $23,300 to $34,745. Add $900 for freight.

The New 2015 Ford F-150
By Larry Rust
Recently I had the opportunity to drive the 2015 Ford F-150 Pickup Truck. This truck captured a great deal of attention upon its introduction because of the use of a high strength aluminum for the body. This endeavor has allowed Ford to reduce the weight of the truck by 700 lbs., giving this vehicle an even greater towing capability.
The F-150 that I drove is the SuperCrew 4 x 4 Off Road in the Platinum edition. This truck has so much luxury it is hard to believe it is a pickup truck. It is well-equipped with heated and cooled leather seats, rear outboard heated seats, 360-degree viewing cameras, twin panel Moonroof, power tilt and telescoping steering wheel (heated), voice activated navigation and SiriusXM to name a few. The various trim packages offered are the entry XL, XLT, Lariat, King Ranch and the Platinum.
The base engine for this model is the 5.0L TI-VCT V8 with 385HP and 387 ft.-lb. of torque and equipped with a 6 speed SelectShift transmission. The F-150 that I drove had the optional 3.5L EcoBoost engine with the 6 speed SelectShift transmission. There is plenty of power in this truck; the engine puts out 325 HP with 375 ft.-lb. of torque.
My test drive involved city driving where I found the truck to handle very well with a lot acceleration for a V6. The ride was very quiet in the cabin and comfortable as well.
On the exterior, the front end has a massive looking chrome front grill with a chrome insert front bumper and chrome tow hooks. The power mirrors are power folding with heated glass, integral turn signal indicators, LED security approach lamps and drivers side auto dimming feature. There is also a blind spot monitor in the mirrors that will warn you if a vehicle is there. Below the doors are power running boards that retract nicely out of the way when the doors are closed. At the tailgate, there is an integral step, garb bar and tailgate lift assist. Also the tailgate has a remote release that, when activated from the key fob, will unlock and gradually lower to a flat position. The tires were all terrain tires mounted on 20-inch polished aluminum wheels.
Using this truck for pulling a trailer would be a dream because of the technology that Ford has put in this truck. Information on the instrument panel tells you trailer brake controller settings, vehicle pitch and steering angle as well as whether there is a running light or brake light not functioning on the trailer. The factory integrated brake controller monitors the braking input, vehicle speed and the ABS system on the truck to even out the performance of the electric trailer brakes to the truck. The rear mounted camera makes the alignment of the ball on your trailer hitch to the trailer so much easier when backing up.
The XL model has an MSRP of $25,800 and the top of line Platinum model has an MSRP of $51,350.

2015 GMC Canyon SLE All-Terrain Truck
By Bob Kroupa
My test drive of the mid-size 2015 GMC 4-wheel drive SLE All-Terrain Truck was quite timely as it was delivered prior to a major snow storm. In advance of the predicted storm, my test drive included tight parking in a strip mall, congested city traffic, cruising at the posted 70 MPH on the Interstate and handling sharp turns on a quick trip to the North Carolina mountains. All my challenges were easily handled with this new, updated pick-up truck.
Several interesting observations surfaced on my test drive. Examples included my surprise at the ease of parking based on the Canyon's tight turning radius of 41 feet. Also several bystanders shared their thoughts on the great 'curb appeal' of the Canyon's bold front end design. And then when I opened the cabin door their "Wow's" exploded when they saw the center console shifter and storage bins. All agreed this model is a far cry from earlier midsize truck interiors.
My seats were quite comfortable, the cabin was quiet and the handling on the mountain curves provided the expected positive experience from a GMC truck - solid and controlled. The Canyon is the right size in my opinion for ease of city and/or highway driving.
As you can see in the photo, our recent and unusual North Carolina weather offered the opportunity to add an exciting new dimension to our test drive. The Canyon had the Auto Trac automatic 4WD feature that employs an electronically controlled transfer case that allows the driver to shift from 2WD to 4WD. Four modes are available: 2WD, Auto, 4WD-high and 4WD-low. In the Auto mode the transfer case will operate in 2WD and will automatically apply traction to the front wheels (4WD) when the vehicle senses slippage.
Placing the transfer case in 4WD-low, I was able to leave my driveway with ease. As the weather and roads cleared, I placed the transfer case in the Auto mode and it engaged in 4WD when slippage was detected when I was in an unplowed parking area. The Auto Trac feature is a great option, even in the South! It is offered on the base, SLE and SLT trim models.
Our test vehicle was powered by the 3.6 liter, direct injection, dual overhead cam V-6 rated at 305 horsepower. The base engine for the Canyon is a 2.5 liter, I-4 rated at 200 HP. All models have a 6-speed automatic transmission available. The base model also offers a 6-speed manual transmission.
Fuel economy is rated at 17 City/24 Highway/ Combined 20 MPG for our test vehicle.
Safety features include six air bags including head curtain side air bags, large side view mirrors, a rear vision camera and a Stabilitrak-stability control system with traction control.
Other noteworthy features are the trailer towing rating of up to 7,000 pounds with the V-6 engine. In addition, the rear bumper has corner steps for adjusting cargo and a lockable tailgate with a damper for ease of lowering.
Pricing starts at $21,800 including transportation for the base model. Our well equipped 4WD, V-6 SLE model has a base price of $34,310. Included was 'On Star', 4G LTE connectivity, XM Radio and 4 UBS ports.
BOTTOM LINE: This GMC pick-up truck is worthy of a visit to your GM Dealer. Additional details are available at gmc.com/canyon.
